Introduction:
One of main topics of the Bible is that reminds Christians that we are no longer slaves to sin due to the death of Christ on the cross. many people of today still struggle of letting go of their past self because they do not believe that they deserve the mercy grace or forgiveness of God. another thing that we should also come to be reminded is that we are adopted into the family of God through the spirit. That does not mean that our lives will become easy for us once we chose to be Christian, to become part of God’s family. As Christians we are to live in the world but never be part of the world. that is still a struggle for every Christian today but we have to remember our suffering could lead to glorifying God. The third thing that we are remind as Christian is about God’s everlasting love for everyone. That is all because of Christ and what he had done for us. the only way to know God is through Christ. John 14:6-7
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
and we see that from Paul who writes to the early church of Rome. So today we are going to be looking at Romes Chapter 8 today.
Free from the Bondage of Sin:
Free from the Bondage of Sin:
One of the few things that Paul reminds early Christians is that we are no longer slaves to sin. if you all remember your class on Romans 6 Paul talks about how people have a choice in this life have an important choice to make in this life. that choice is to either to be slaves of righteousness or to be slaves of world. So, Lets turn in our Bibles to Romans 8:1-4
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Just from these first four verses from this passage here in Romans we see that Paul reminds Christians that there is no condemnation in those who are in Jesus Christ, Paul explains that those who apply the teachings of Christ into their daily life and who are not walking according to the flesh, but are walking in the spirit have no reason to be condemned. Now if we move onto verse two we see that Paul begins to talk about the law of the spirit of life which also in contrast the law of sin and death that rules over our flesh, and is this law is superior to the law of Moses too. The law of the Spirit also breaks us free from the the bondage of the law of sin and death, which is something that law of Moses could not do. God uses mankind to do his work, but mankind must chose to do the will of God or chose to live by the world standards. it really comes back to being slaves of righteousness or being a slave of the world. Paul then goes on with verse 3 by explaining to Christians how the law of Moses focus on the flesh instead of the heart of man. Paul then remind Christians about how our flesh is our weakness. As Christians we come to understand that it is not the law that is weak but our flesh. Another thing that Paul explains to Christians is that the law will not justify unless we are perfect, but our flesh prevents us from becoming perfect because our flesh is weak. then if we look at the second part of verse 3 here Paul talks about how God sent his Son Jesus Christ, Paul here is remind all Christians that God sent his son to do his work here on earth to inspire and to encourage others that with God all things are possible, and on the other hand as Christians we understand that God love the world so much that he was willing to send his only son to die for the sin of the world John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Paul is remind us that we are free from sin and death because of Jesus Christ. this allows us to look at the last part of verse 3 of Romans 8. in the last part of verse 3 of Roman 8 Paul explains how Christ himself took on the nature of flesh, How Christ was tempted as we are in this life, As Christians we understand Christ had endure temptations like anyone else. Mt 4:1
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Right before Jesus begin his ministry, he was lead into the wilderness by the spirit to be tempted by the devil. Before Satan came after us he went to God, then to Jesus. Satan was known as the ruler of this world another verse we can also look at comes Heb 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Just from these two verse here we can what Paul is talking about how Christ knows the limitations of weakness of the flesh. there people out the world who yet still have trouble understanding the importance of Christ, even Satan when he was testing Christ in the wilderness understood the value of Christ and what Christ was able to do. If Satan was able to tempt Christ into sinning against God we would still be slaves to sin, and still be separated from God. This allow us to move to to verse 4 of Romans 8:4
4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Paul continues with reminding Christians that it all because of Jesus. Without Jesus we will never attain righteousness. lets turn in our Bibles to 2nd Cor 5:21
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
We Jesus died on the Cross for our sins he bored all the sins of the world. He became the ultimate sacrificial lamb for mankind. Even John had called him the Lamb of God in John 1:29
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
As Christians we come to understand that God finds no fault in his son Jesus Christ, and if we are in his son then there is no fault in us also. Let also turn in our Bible to Isa 53:4-6
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
From these two verse here, as Christian we come to understand that without Christ we are still in bondage of Sin, and death. We would be consider dead. Christ bore everything for all the sins of Mankind. if we continue with Verse 4 here in Romans 8. Paul really brings back to how we chose to live. are we going to walk in the path of the flesh? which is our heart desire and the works of the flesh mention in Gal 5:19-21
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
These are the thing that separate us from God and lead us to destruction, because we would rather chose the world and what it has to offer over God who loves us. the other choice we have is to follow God and Jesus Christ and walk in the Spirit. What this means is that we are willing to do the will of God. To follow and obey the commandments, to apply the teaching to our daily life. One of my old youth Minster taught me this back when i was Attending the youth group classes. Does any one know what the acronym for the Bible is?
B: Basic
I: Instructions
B:Before
L: Leaving
E: Earth
The only way Christians are going to be able to do the will of God, Obey his commandments, to learn from him, to get know the creator of life, and to be set free from the bondage of sin and death is to study God’s word the Bible. The Bible is our guide to know the will of God, to know who God is, to know who Christ is and what Christ has done for mankind. this allow us to look at the next couple of verse in Romans 8:5-11
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Coming to verse 5 here in Romans 8. we see that Paul goes back to talking about how those who live in the world chase after pleasure of the flesh. if you remember Gal 5:19-21. which talks about the fruit of the flesh. The flesh is weak, and its desire for the lust of the world over spiritual needs. today many people of the world would chase after pleasure of the world in order to escape their problem or they are seeking out things to fill the void that they do not know that God can fill. another thing to keep in mind when chasing after the pleasures of the flesh is that it will eventually corrupt the spirit within. Now on the other hand the second part of verse 5 in Romans 8. Paul talks about those who follow the spirit chase after things that are good. studying, praying, meditating, applying the teaching of the spirit to their daily life. Now if we move on to verse 6 of Romans 8:6
6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Here Paul goes back to what it means to have to have a mind that is only thoughts of world passions, desires, or pleasures. usually this someone who will not change themselves for God. Not only corrupts the body, but the spirit also. which will eventually lead to destruction or what Christians would call the spiritual death. which also means alienated from God after we leave earth. Then Paul moves on about what it means to be spiritual minded. Paul wants Christians to understand that we should keep our minds on things from above and not of the world. As Christians we come to understand that the church is a school to prepare us for a life with God. The teaching of Christ are there to guide and discipline Christians to prepare them to live according to the standards of God will come to understand the fruits of the spirit found in Gal 5:22-24
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
From this passage here in Galatians we come to see that Paul talks about these fruit, how the fruit correspond with living a life according to the spirit and God’s standards. Those who live according to the spirit will understand the deeper meaning behind this fruits and recognized them as gifts from God. Now in this next verse here in Romans 8:7
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
From this verse Paul talks about how those who would chose the live in the flesh and to chase after the desires of the flesh will become enemies of God. Lets turn in our Bibles to Romans 7:18
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
Paul warns about how the mind of the Flesh will go against the will of God thus keeping us within the bondage of sin and death. Paul continues in verse 8 here in Romans 8:8
8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Paul warns Christians those who chase after or live according to flesh will not be able to please God. In which means these type of people are not obedient to laws of God. Many people struggle with well God made me the way i am, then God must accept me as i am. the problem with this thinking leads many astray from the path that God had made for us to escape from the laws of sin and death. Because in verse 9 here Romans 8:9
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
Paul talks about how those who living according to Gods will the spirit of God dwells in them, As Christians we come to understand that Paul also explains that those who do not have spirit and do not have a mind of the spirit are not from God, they are the one who prefer to live according to the law of sin and death. to Chase after their own pleasures and goals within the world. the spirit allow us to come to God without the spirit we can not come to the throne of God. this allow us to look at verse 10 here in Romans 8:10
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Paul continues with the Spirit how it is part of the trinity. it the spirit of God, the spirit of Christ, and its is Christ. The spirit is what separates us from the world, and what sets us free from the bondage of sin and death. so where does the Spirit come from? lets turn in our Bibles to John 14:16
John 14:16 (NKJV)
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
and then lets also look at John 14:26
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Just from these two verse here in the Gospel of John we come to understand that Jesus talks about how the Spirit will come from the father to guide us, to be a teacher, and to help us come to know God. As Christian we also understand that the Spirit is also the spirit of Christ too. Lets look at Romans 8:2
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
As Christians we must also understand that when it comes to the Spirit, the Spirit does not speak for himself. Christians come to understand that from this verse here in John 16:13
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
Think about it this way, I am pretty sure we all remember those Cartoons that were one of those Characters has to make a decision, and all of sudden an Devil and angel will appear on each shoulder? in some sense that is how the Spirit works for us Christians today. As Christians we have devil and angel on our shoulders trying to convince us which way to go. the devil leading into the bondage of sin and death. the angel leading us to do the will of God. Paul then goes on to explaining how the Spirit manifests Christ Let turn in our Bibles to John 14:21
21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
Just from these couple of verse here Paul trying to explain to the Roman Christians that the trinity all work together in the salvation of the Christian that believes in Christ. Then Paul continues with second part of verse ten here, by going back to how the body or the flesh is dead because of sin, as Christians we come to understand that the body or flesh is our weakness. would it not be better to focus on the Spirit that dwell within the body? The third part of this verse Paul continues with how Spirit is life free from the bondage of sin and death through righteousness. The Spirit leads us towards righteousness within Christ. we must exercise the righteousness in order for it to grow stronger. This allow us move to verse 11 in Romans 8:11
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Paul begins by explaining the law of Moses, the law of sin and death, and Law of the Spirit. As Christians we understand that we are no longer under the law of Moses, and that Those who chose to live under the law of the Spirit are set free from bondage of the law of sin and death, but in order to be set free from the bondage of the law of sin and death. A person must have the spirit. In order for someone who wishes to chose to live according to the standards of God, doing the will of God, willing to be spiritual minded, and who is obedient and willing to apply the teaching of Christ and God to their daily lives. its simply by follow Gods word. Act 2:38-39
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
From these two verse here in Acts see that Peter talks to the Crowd about what to do since the felt the guilt of crucifying Christ. Peter tells them like how Paul tells the Romans, that they need to change their ways. They need to stop thinking about worldly gain and start to think about Spiritual matters. Eventually the spirit will lead them to the next step which is to be baptized into Christ for remissions of sin, and they will receive the Holy Spirit. Which leads us to second part of verse 11 here in Romans 8:11
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Paul then goes to explain to the Romans Christians about how God had raised Christ from the dead, and that we too share in this gift because of the Spirit that dwells in the Body. there two things that are necessary for this to happen . 1. is having the Spirit which is the source of life, and 2. As Christians we come to understand that the raising Christ up from dead allow us to raise also because Christ was the first to raise. Not only that but Christ is our lord, our King, Our judge, and head of the Body. we as Christians are members of the body of Christ which is the church. Let us turn in our Bibles to Col 1:18
18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
From this verse here Christians come to understand that it because of Christ, since he was first born, and Christ was also here since the beginning. We can also look at 1st Cor 15:20
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
From this we come to understand that Christ was the first to be risen from the dead. As Christians it is our hope that we live according to the will of God, do the things that obedient to God, and live according to the Spirit because we will share in the same Resurrection. Back in Romans 6:1-4
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
From this Passage we come to understand that we share the same inheritance of Christ because as Christians we should no long seek out the desires of the flesh but of Spiritual things that are higher places. Because once we become baptized we are known by God Gal 4:9
9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?
At the end of the day everyone has a Choice to make. Paul really hits hard with the choices we make in everyday life. Remember The Bible is our guide preparing us to live a life with God. Our Choices down here on the this earth will reflect the outcome when we come to the throne of God. Now if we have any question, Ill try to answer as best as i Can. If i do not know the answer i will get back with as soon as i can.
