Proverbs 13:12  Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

OMIT Transliteration: tôḥelet Phonetic Pronunciation: to-kheh’-leth

There are times that we have hopes and desires and longings for some things. And sometimes it makes the heart sick not to be able to get what you’ve been hoping for.

And often times People may look at your glory without realizing your difficult story. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. The song writer said “I’m climbing up the rough side of the mountain and I’m doing the best I can.

Quick question Have you ever wondered when am I going to reach the end of this God forsaken Mountain? The children of Israel must wondered at some point, “ Lord when you’re going stop punishing us for our ancestor’s mistakes. And then in Lev. and Deuteronomy God said the children will not be punished for the parents sins. In other words there is hope out of this dreadful state of conditioning. And Proverbs 13:12  says  Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

When the desire cometh It is a tree of Life. When things finally work out. When the investment finally pays off. When my child finally heard my heart. When my job finally gave me a promotion. When the church finally hears God’s voice. When the community finally realizes that without God we will continue to have chaos, bedlam, crazy and neurotic and coo coo running rampage through our communities. When the desire comes. When our relationships grow deeper and stronger in the Lord.. When the desire comes.... The bible says those that diligently seek the Lord will get the desires of his heart. When the desire comes, When things finally come to fruition and stop fizzling out before the finish like a half baked cake). When the desire comes it will be like that gumbo that makes you get two bowls and eat is all down to the last drop.

The bible says when the desire cometh, comma “it is a tree of life.” It is a tree of Life. And Wow what an interesting choice of words. It is a tree of Life. That has the realm-a-fications around eternal Life. The Tree of Life is the symbolism of Eternal Life with Elohim. Elohim is the God head plural . God the Father God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. One God in three person. Bless the Trinity.

Tree of Life....

I don’t care how bad things appear to be When you have Hope Yes Sir it’s a Tree of Life. 3x I didn’t know that the word Hope was so Powerful, until I had to have hope for a brighter day.

The Word Hope in the Hebrew Transliteration is the word tôḥelet Phonetic Pronunciation: to-kheh’-leth ( Toe Hell Let) It means Expectation.

We have had some moments where we were at the end of our ropes. And the Lord have said just tie a knot at the end of your rope and hold on hang in there keep praying keep trusting and keep Hoping in the Lord. (Toe Hell Let 3x). This lesson today is a reflection of the many times in our lives that we’ve looked back and said How did I get through that????

How did I make it this far? The answer comes back God’s Grace. I made it this far by the Grace of God. We made it by the Grace of God yes AND THAT’S WHAT GOD DID. And We had to have the Hope the Faith and the Believe that God would bestow His great graces upon us or we wouldn’t have made it.

“We had to have the Hope the Faith and the Believe that God would bestow His great graces upon us because without it, we wouldn’t have made it”. My Pastor, The late great Rev Samuel Singleton, Jr. Also an educator/music teacher band director said Ray I want my word to be precise and my instructions clear when I’m talking to God’s people. He said because “it’s just like the notes of music on the page they are arranged in such a way that the listener hears beautiful music in their ears. As a music teacher also I understood it perfectly. I’m still in hope. But What if you’re a mechanic like my daddy was. Then you learn every step that it takes for you rebuild and engine.( I saw this little kit on Facebook that you could build yourself a tiny little engine.. Real little engine and every step was shown until the little engine started off and kept running. And that’s the way Hope is.. We’ve got too go through the processes in order to get where God wants us to be.

Nobody in here became a super saint over night. It takes time to develop maturity in the word of God. And so Hope deferred makes the heart sick but when the desire cometh it is a Tree of Life.

Toe Hell Let: Hope.

And then there is Psalms 42:1-11 When your enemies say like verse 3 Where’s Your God? Where your God At? In life you’re going to be faced with shrilling and chilling moments when the outside world is going to say Where’s your God? Aren’t you supposed to be a child of God? Aren’t you supposed to be exempt from trouble, from pain from disdain, from depression, from oppression, from trials and tribulations, Hah ? So Where your God At?

And that’s when you’ve got to be Hopeful that Hope is sending Help for a hopeless situation. Psalms 42:1-11 Has two major points

I.Longing for God (Psalms 42:1–5)

1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

1.In verse 1 the text is teaching talking and telling us that the writer longs for God so much so that its like a deer that panteth after water. The deer runs so fast The deer is so hyper the deer’s adrenaline is so much higher than regular animals until it can take off sprinting up to 50 miles an hour in seconds. The back drop to this verse is that “ on an occasion During a drought, the writer sees a female deer (hind) panting and struggling to reach water to quench her thirst. And that analogy prompted his creative spiritual insight. it made Korah’s grandson say that this reminded him that he thirsted for the Lord and wanted to go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. it was about the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

It vividly reminded the writer that “The living God was the God of his life” (Verse 8 says He’s the God of my Life!!!), and he could not live without Him. I feel like this Psalmist too because I can’t make it without the Lord. And there is a practical application for an animal and a practical application for the human.

1. For the animal’s desire for God Joel 1:20 The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

2. Then for the human’s desire for God see Psalms 84:2), 2  My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of  the LORD:  My heart and my flesh crieth out for  the living God.

Then #2 in Verse 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? I see at least two things in the text. I see a zeal for God.And when we have a zeal for God nobody got to beg you to come to church because when Sunday Morning come it’s automatic You wake up with your mind stayed on Jesus. The Psalmist says “My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:” My soul Wait nah it’s personal MY Soul My Nephesh. My soul because in the end all that’s going to matter is my Nephesh. Did my soul get saved???That tell me that it’s possible to go through the motions of church and not have church in your heart. because when Church is in your heart you worry about if your soul is in right standing with God.

Because the verse next thing in the text says after the colon: when shall I come and appear before God? Listen it’s not about what they say, it’s about What God says when we have to appear before Him.And the Psalmist is saying that he Hungers and thirsts are for fellowship with God and the quest for that fellowship with God brings the soul satisfaction.

3. In verse 3. Let’s read it together “My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? That’s the part that gets to me because the Psalmist is saying I’ve put my Hope and trust in thee and outsiders are saying Where your God at now? In other words the silent adversary is saying “your God has left you high and dry. Why do you continue hoping in Him? Because verses 3 and 8 explains that the writer has pain!!! tears are indicative of pain. The writer is experiencing unpleasant situation he feels the pain that’s caused by his separation from God’s sanctuary and by the constant ridicule of the people around him. It’s so bad until “He “feeds” on his grief (which is not a wise thing to do) because his tears has became his bread. He is weeping as regular as he is eating. That’s a lot of crying that’s a lot of grief and that’s a lot of trying to cope and handle it all on your own.

In verse 4. When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

And so the writer is saying that Memory can be either a blessed medicine for the troubled heart or it can open new wounds and keep the pain fresh. The writer poured out his soul in prayer (v. 4, pleading for the Lord to set him free and take him back to Jerusalem.

Remember now that this is a pilgrimage Psalm. And so also the illustration that David gives is in Psalms 62: 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. Selah means repeat the verse in other words sing it again. and again and again pour out your heart before God! And I feel like Shadrach Mechach and Abednego even if God doesn’t deliver me I am not going to bow down because I know He’s Able . Ah He’s Able. 3x So I’ll pour out my heart before the Lord.

Then 5. In verse 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Listen to the writer talking to himself Why am I so sad? Why am I so upset? I should put my hope in God and keep praising him, my Savior and 6 my God. The key that Korath’s grandson is saying is that when you start feeling mad and bad and sad you’ve got to say to your self. Why am I so sad when I got Jesus. Why am I letting this work on my nerves when I got the Lord on my side. He says I should put my Hope. In the Lord and then kick up a praise and don’t stop. And then let everybody around you know that ain’t no party like a Holy Ghost party because a Holy Ghost party don’t stop. Listen to me if you feel yourself falling into depression shake that off!!! And say out loud to your self I will have Hope tôḥelet (Toe Hell let)3x. The definition for Toe Hell Let is one word Expectation.. I expect that God will see me through. The spelling for Toe Hell let is....

II.Remembering God (Psalms 42:6–11)

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. 7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. 8 Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. 9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Verse 5 and verse 11 are the exact same thing.

Let read verse 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Then verse 11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Then look one page over in Psalms 43: 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. And I looked it up and found out that Psalms 42 and Psalms 43 were one Psalm before at some point in the past. and for the record I don’t know why it was broken up into two different Psalms and the biblical commentators couldn’t give a legitimate answer either. But having thus said Let me finish the second half of this outline.

1. In verses 6&7 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. 7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

The writer is saying that The emotional and spiritual landscape has changed from a drought to a raging storm. And the writer in the text is feeling like he is drowning in sorrow and pain. He saying This is too much for me. It’s freaking me out. it’s stressing me out. I’m overwhelmed by this sorrow and pain. The memory the writer draws from is that The Jordan River has its source in the Hermon range, and when the rains and melting snow would turn the rivulets into cascades of water and dangerous cataracts, it’s an example of a picture of intense suffering.

Boy oh boy the literature of the bible is so beautiful even when its describing and awful situation. The way the writer is explaining this symbolizes the worst possible conditions. Here’s what I’m talking about the word Mizar in verse 6 means “littleness. ,” And the reason that’s important is “the writer felt very small in the midst of that raging storm. But he made a wise decision, to remember God, Not your circumstances. remember what I taught us about circumstances. Circumstances are the ugly things that happen when we take our eyes off of the Lord.

And so verse 7 says when things are too deep for you, when the waves flow high over your head put your trust and faith and belief and HOPE in the Lord. Listen to me when things have gotten so rotten until its way above your head Give it to God 5x. Ooo Lord have mercy I don’t know who I’m preaching and teaching to but I feel it tonight.

2. In verse 8 The bible says Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. It’s a powerful Prayer and get this In verse 8, the writer used The Word Jehovah instead of Elohim, I didn’t know that until I looked it up. And what this means is that this was a turning point in his difficult experience. Because all Jewish converts and believers knew that Jehovah is the God of the covenant, the faithful God who cares for His people. He is the God who showers His people with lovingkindness, gives them promises they can claim when they pray, and hears them when they praise and worship. In other words God hears and answers prayer.

3. Listen to the Psalmist’s Prayer.8 Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

It’s a powerful thing when we are remembering God in prayer. 8  The LORD shows his true love every day. At night I have a song, and I pray to my living God.9  I say to God, my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why am I sad and troubled by my enemies?” 10  My enemies’ insults make me feel as if my bones were broken. They are always saying,“Where is your God?” 11  Why am I so sad? Why am I so upset? I should put my hope in God and keep praising him,my Savior and my God.
