You Likely know the story but have you ever read it?

Reveal God’s purpose
Points towards Jesus
Genesis 1:1 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Matthew 28:16–20 ESV
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jonah as a piece of literature:
Jonah is a narrative parable
Jonah is a real person.
Jesus mentions Jonah (Matthew 12)
3. Jonah reads like satire
Preview of how this story is representet satirically:
Jonah:
The man of God runs away from God
Jonah preaches a 5 word sermon (The whole community even the cows get saved)
he is mad it goes well
the book ends with him mad at at God

Big Idea: God will call you do things you dont want to do, and to love people who are difficult.

Pray and Dive in

God will call you:

Jonah 1:1–2 ESV
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.”
The Word of the Lord: (From the beginning this book is weird)
1 What is the Word of the Lord? (Prophesy)
We get a story about a prophet rather than prophesy

Who is God calling in this case ?

Jonah :
2 Kings 14:23–25 ESV
In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher.
What is God calling him to do?

The Difficult call: “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.

Ninevites:
known terrible people but they repent.
ADD MORE!!!!!!!
How does Jonah respond to the call of God?
He runs in the complete opposite direction
tries to find a boat to the farthest place from ninevah
We are more like Jonah than we want to admit…
If we are honest:
1) Jesus makes the clear call to follow him.. yet we walk in disobedience
2) If we are honest, we often don’t want redemption for our enemies.
This story is aimed at exposing the worst tendency that show up in Gods people.
Jonah struggles with :
Pride
hard hardedness
judgmentalism
tribalism
and Likely so do you…

Closing Prayer: Will you join us me in asking God to begin to remove these things from us as a people?

Closing illustration: Chronicles of Narnia
Prayer: God please remove the scales
