Remembering the Crucifixion
Isaiah 53:1-12
Theme: There are three remembrances found in these verses.
Introduction: Tonight we have narrowed our service down to a specific purpose and meaning as taught by our Savior “And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:24–25)
How easy it is for us to forget or at least meditate or concentrate on what Christ did for us on the cross. This service is set aside to remember the Crucifixion. When is the last time you just meditated upon what that means, what a huge event that affected the world forever?
In this passage, God prophetically gives us the meaning and message of the crucifixion. Some have tried to tie this passage to the nation of Israel as being the suffering person in this passage. This would be a clear denial of the cross and the Savior as shown in the gospels. It is so specifically described that there is no question this passage is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Too often we get so busy, we forget the important things in our lives. Tonight, we are called to remember the Lord’s death until He comes.
Here in prophetic form, we will view three remembrancesof the cross tonight.
I. Remember His painful suffering vv. 4-5
A. Emotional suffering v.4
1. Grief is intense sorrow caused by someone’s death.
2. Sorrow is a feeling of deep distress caused by a loss even to be in pain.
3. Despised means repugnant-they had great contempt for Him and His ministry.
4. They had no respect or regard for Him-mistreatment in every way was normal for Him.
B. Physical suffering v.5
1. He was wounded and beaten are the physical sufferings of Jesus.
2. The stripes-suffered physical pain
II. Remember His purpose for suffering v. 6
A. Our sinfulness
1. God did all of this because we have gone astray.
2. We are living the way we choose-
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9)
3. He took our iniquities on Himself for us.
B. Our substitute
1. The theological terminology is various atonement-means He became our substitute on the cross.
2. He died in our place so that we don’t have to die.
3. He suffered the punishment of our sin.
4. Tonight we celebrate His mission and purpose for suffering as our substitute.
III. Remember His purchase in suffering v.10
A. Obeyed the will of the Father
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:5–6)
B. Satisfied the wrath of the Father
“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2)
Conclusion: Tonight we are saved because of what Christ did for us by dying, being buried, and rose again the third day.
