Dead to Sin or Dead to God?
Dead to Sin or Dead to God?
The Text Summary: Christians have died to their sin
The Main Idea: The dominion of sin in the life of a Christian is eternally dead when they are united with Christ
The Probing Question: How is the dominion of sin dead in the life of a Christian?
The Transitional Sentence: By the grace of God
Main Proposition:
Statement of Doctrine or Application (SILVER BULLET)
The main thing: Christians are either dead to their sin or they are dead to God
Intro:
Statement of proposition:
The book of Romans was written by a preacher to a church that was in much need of direction.
This Epistle was not written for this church or anybody to read it just for the sake of intellectual or educational success or gain.
Paul’s only goal from this epistle was to enable the Christians of Rome to truly glorify God according to the truth of Scripture and to teach them personal purity that reflects the Gospel through the saving faith in Jesus Christ by the agent of the Holy Spirit.
As Paul gets to Romans 6, he is telling the Christians of Rome what the implications or conclusions are of the grace of God in Christ “for many” for whom Christ died and rose.
As we get into this upcoming section:
In this section Paul is telling the story of what every single believer goes through when they come to saving faith in Christ (He is preaching the Gospel)
This is absolutely necessary and nonnegotiable when it comes to eternal salvation
Paul is arguing that once they are buried and resurrected in union with Christ, the dominion and rule that sin has over them is eternally broken and ONLY then will someone be able to glorify God.
There is a common theme throughout the Epistles of the Romans and that is grace.
Other texts that support
Romans 3:24: “Justification by grace”
Romans 4:16: “Faith by grace”
Romans 5:2, 15-21: “faith by grace”
Romans 6:1-14: “we are united in Christ’s death and resurrection by God’s grace
None of what we are reading is possible without the free gift of grace by God
Why does this matter?
Paul is directing these Christians of Rome toward the only way to glorify God, the only way that God can be glorified.
Paul is always point us to Christ and God’s glorification
Paul is going to prove that you cannot be alive and dead at the same time to the same thing.
The pattern in your life cannot look like the world: You cannot drag somebody into your sin and think that everything is okay.
Misery loves company and Satan will make sin look beautiful, fun and enticing.
This is a personal journey:This is between YOU and God. It is YOU, not your church, family or friends. This is YOUR story as a believer and follower of our Lord Jesus Christ
Today we are going to prove HOW exactly somebody is able to walk in the newness of life
Characteristics of being alive to God or being alive to your flesh (Draw on whiteboard)
Verse 1 and 2: Paul sets the tone
Who is Paul talking about? He uses the word “we”, Who does “we” refer to?
So if he putting his name into the same group as other church people he is talking to “Christians”.
This is important to know because:
Christians are the only ones to have the ability to obey God’s commands.
This is not an impossible task that he is talking about. He is not talking to convicted people. These are converted people.
In Romans 5:20:
20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
In Romans 6:1 Paul is voicing a possible objection to what was stated.
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
Paul’s response is very stark and decisive: “By no means”. Paul wants to be very clear that sinning more will never give God more glory and in the upcoming verses he goes into detail to support his claim that death and life cannot coexist
Today we are going to answer: How does the dominion of sin die in the life of a Christian?
Main Point #1: Christians are identified with Christ in His death and resurrection
Main Point #1: Christians are identified with Christ in His death and resurrection
Statement:
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Prove:
Verse 3:
The difference between someone under conviction and someone that is converted is that a truly converted Christian and Christ share in the defining moments of his story:
Death, Burial, Resurrection and ascension. This passage shows the Christian’s participation and identification in these events.
The Greek word for baptize means “to be identified with” and Paul uses this same word and meaning in 1 Corinthians 10:2
2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
What does Paul mean here?
Paul is describing the Exodus from Egypt; the Israelites passed through the sea and were guided by the cloud.
In this way they are identified with the work and purpose of their leader, Moses
The cloud and sea represent the redemptive event in which Israel escaped the tyrannical rule of Pharaoh and life of slavery in Egypt.
Paul here is once again comparing the New Testament church with Old Testament Israel and the leaders of the Old Testament Covenants. (Why is this important?)
The same way the Christian is identified with Christ.
Christ’s passive and active obedience (Imputed), we are in union with him in his death, resurrection, ascension, etc.
Verse 4:
As we are identified with Christ we experience the same benefits of salvation.
When a believer comes into union with Christ by faith alone, they experience the benefits from which Christ has already benefited and those benefits are: Justification, sanctification and adoption.
Justification: We are declared legally righteous
Sanctification: Enabled to die to sin and live in righteousness
Adoption: Have all the privileges of the sons of God (Union, communication, access and eternal life)
Identity in Christ (Whiteboard)
Paul moves from being baptized into the death of Christ to being united with Christ in his resurrection.
This is where we start to really dig deep in this text (Important markers for us to understand)
When someone has died in Christ and are then united in his resurrection they are not the same person. Everything about their life has just changed.
This is eternal
The Greek word for dead in this verse is referring to the spiritually dead, dead to Christ and dead to His Gospel.
We are eternally separated from the previous position
This person is now dead to the dominion of sin and the world and the powers that once controlled this persons life.
Just as Christ has died in the old world and is eternally separated from it, Christ’s followers that are now in union with him have also died to the old world.
We have been separated from the old world and have been raised with him as new people.
Being in Union with Christ enables this new person to obey God’s commandments.
Being part of the old world people corporately identified with the first Adam who represented this world, sin, and condemnation, but now we are identified with Christ who represents everlasting life and glorification of the Father.
We see Paul use the same Greek phrase “newness of life”
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
We have to be a new creation because the old could never glorify God.
Paul then tells us why Christ was raised from the dead and why we are raised from the dead
that is for the glory of God
Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory and grace of God, so are his followers.

Main Point #2: The crucifixion of our flesh
Main Point #2: The crucifixion of our flesh
Statement
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
As Paul moves into the meaning of being united with the death and resurrection of Christ, he starts to give implications of those defining moments in a believer’s life.
Prove
Verse six is the first of only two references to our crucifixion with Christ and the second being:
19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Verse 6:
We are no longer enslaved to sin since our old selves were crucified and brought to nothing.
