Scripture: Psalms 40:1-3
Introduction:
Nothing is too hard for God; He has your back in every situation. All you need to do is call on Him.
Are You a Patient Person?
Have you ever gone shopping with your wife? I find shopping boring and prefer to get in and out. Unfortunately, my wife is like most women—she loves to browse, look, try on clothes, and ask how she looks. There's a survey that says the average man spends more than three weeks of his life waiting for his wife or girlfriend to finish shopping! What?! And that’s just counting the times they shop together! The average couple shops together twice a month, with the average woman spending 23 minutes browsing, trying on, and buying things while the average man either follows her around or sits awkwardly in the store, waiting. We've all seen these guys—the ones carrying the bags, following their wives around, or sitting patiently by the fitting room. They all have that "patient look" on their faces.
Maybe you’re waiting for a promotion, but your boss tells you, "Not this year, maybe next year." Are you patiently waiting?
How about at a restaurant, where you've ordered food, and it's taking longer than expected?
Or on Black Friday, standing in line at 6 a.m., waiting for the store to open? In these moments, are you patiently waiting?
Open Your Bibles to Psalms 40:1-3
David speaks of a time when he felt trapped in a no-win situation, with his back against the wall. He acknowledges that he hadn’t always done what God wanted, admitting he had sinned more times than the hairs on his head. Yet, having experienced God's help in the past, David knew he could rely on Him in the present and future. Even in times of trouble, David called on God for help.
Psalms 40:1
"I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry."
The word "patiently" here comes from the Greek word 'hupomone,' which means "to remain steadfast under pressure." David wasn’t just waiting; he was waiting with an expectation of hearing from the Lord. God uses waiting to develop patience in us. (Reference 1 Samuel 13:8-14, where Saul’s impatience led to disobedience.)
The verse continues, "He inclined to me and heard my cry." Other translations say, "He turned to me." Like a shepherd committed to protecting and providing for his flock, God listens when we call on Him (Ezekiel 34:22).
Psalms 40:2
"He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."
Imagine being stuck in a pit, trapped in quicksand with no way out on your own. We all have our "pits"—whether it’s addiction, pride, or greed. God meets us in the midst of our mess, our defilement, and our suffering. He lifts us out of our pits, sets our feet on a rock, and gives us a firm place to stand. A rock represents security, stability, and the foundation of God’s control in our lives.
Psalms 40:3
"He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him."
When God delivers us, our response should be one of praise. This praise is an outward expression of an inward transformation. Even if the pain or consequences of the pit aren’t fully behind us, we’re no longer stuck—we’re moving forward.
Three Simple Points:
Trust God – You are not in control.
Seek God – In every situation, He is there.
Proclaim Your Love – Praise the Lord at all times; His praise should continually be in your mouth.
Conclusion:
God can rescue and restore you from any situation. Nothing is too hard for Him. He turns no-win situations into victories. Although God’s forgiveness is a deeply personal experience, share how good He has been to you. Always keep your eyes on the Lord and always give Him praise.
2 Corinthians 1:4
"Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
Pay it forward. God has your back in every situation—rejoice and tell the world. Your testimony can help others who are dealing with the same struggles God just rescued you from.
