John 5:39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
Matthew 5:17–18Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
Luke 24:25–27 “Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
Many people think the Old Testament is unimportant. They say that we should concentrate on the 4 gospels and the New Testament, but the Bible is a book with 66 gospels with each of those books revealing something about Jesus Christ.
As a matter of fact, you should read the Old Testament with eyes wide open looking for Jesus Christ, and it will open up God’s Word to you. That’s where our shallow Bible knowledge causes us some grief. We only have a surface level knowledge of many things in the Bible when the real treasure lies beneath the surface.
In the passages I read, Jesus references the Scripture. What Scripture do you think He was referencing?
On the road to Emmaus after the Resurrection, Jesus revealed Himself to Cleopas and his friend by showing them who He was using the writings of Moses, which begin with the Book of Genesis, through the prophets, which means through the rest of the Old Testament.
Literally, every book in the Old Testament reveals to us something about Jesus Christ. Now, Colin shared a video with me not long ago, and the video was amazing. It was about a passage in Genesis, and to be honest, I did not have believe what I saw on the video, and the video prompted me to do a little digging, and all I could say when I finished was Amen and comment that the more I read the Bible the more I realize that I do not know anything about God’s Word.
We are going to take Genesis Chap. 5, and we are going to see how Christ and the Gospel are revealed throughout every book of the Bible, even the Chapter that we associate with Enoch and the Rapture.

1. Adam, Seth, and Enos.

Genesis 5:1–6 “This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:
And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:”
In these first six verses, three names are given and get ready to be amazed.

A. Adam.

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, and it does not matter what translation we use there are some things that are just lost in translation.
For instance, in Hebrew, Adam meant mankind. Adam was mankind.
Notice what Gen. Chap. 5 v. 1 says. Male and female created he them and called their name Adam. Both male and female were mankind.
Acts 17:26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;”
We are all Adam. We are all mankind. Every man, woman, boy, and girl of every nation, tribe, and language. That brings us to the second name.

B. Seth.

Using the Hebrew meaning, we see that Seth means appointed.
How does being appointed tie into Adam?
For one thing, it means that Seth was in the image of Adam. He was appointed to be Adam.
Genesis 5:3 “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:”
Adam was created in the likeness of God, but Seth was created in Adam’s likeness. He was appointed to be Adam as are all of us.
Seth was appointed to something else too which brings us to the third name.

C. Enos.

In the Hebrew, Enos means mortality and frailty.
The first three names in Gen. Chap. 5 reveal to us a truth found throughout the Bible.
Adam means mankind.
Seth means appointed.
Enos means mortality.
Adam, Seth, and Enos tell us that man is appointed to die.
This is how the New Testament says it, and both of these books are more than likely written by Paul who deeply knew the Hebrew Scriptures.
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
Since we are all Adam, in his likeness, we are appointed to death. Death brought on by sin.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Mankind is appointed to death, but the names do not stop with Enos. There are more names listed that complete the Gospel narrative.

2. Cainan, Mahaleel, and Jared. (Gen. Ch. 5:9-15)

A. Cainan.

So far, we have man is appointed to die, but Cainan injects a big “BUT” into the equation.
Cainan means possessor or purchaser.

B. Mahaleel.

Mahaleel means the shining One from God.
Who is the Shining One from God? Jesus Christ.
This shining One from God is God as indicated by the “el” ending to Mahaleel’s name. Jesus Christ was Adam because of Mary, but Jesus Christ was also God because He did not have Adam as a father. His Father was God.

C. Jared.

Jared means coming down.
Yes, man is appointed to die, but whoever possesses the shining One from God that God sent down from heaven. AMEN!!! Does that phrase sound familiar?
Luke 2:8–15 “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will toward men.
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Beth-lehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.”
What do we have so far?
Man is appointed to die, but whoever possesses the shining One of God coming down from heaven, but the Gospel is not yet complete.

3. Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah. (Gen. Chap. 5: 18-29)

A. Enoch.

Enoch means dedicated or disciplined.
When linked to other names in Gen. Chap. 5, Enoch means the shining One from God descending from Heaven will be totally dedicated to the will of God, and He will be disciplined to the Law of God not offending it in a single point.
Matthew 26:39 “And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
As you can see or are starting to see, everything in the New Testament was seen in type in the Old Testament.

B. Methuselah.

Methuselah is the oldest person to ever live, and we know, when as soon as he died, what happened?
As Jesus Christ was dying, what was happening?
Methuselah means two things. First, when he dies, judgment will come, and second, it means death by judgment, especially the sword.
Do you remember what happened on the Cross?
John 19:33–34 “But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.”

C. Lamech.

Lamech means to be made low, to be poor.
Was Jesus Christ made low? Absolutely.
Luke 2:6–7 “And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Deuteronomy 21:23 “His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.”
Our Lord Jesus Christ left the splendors of Heaven to be born in a manger in Bethlehem. As His life ended, He was made low by being placed on the cursed cross. He was so low that God the Father turned His back on the Shining One from God, and the whole world fell into darkness.
Matthew 27:45 “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”
It had to be because someone from Adam’s race had to die as the judgment for sin, and the only One who could meet the criteria was the shining One from God.
Romans 8:32 “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

4. Noah.

Noah means rest, peace, and protection.
We just talked about how the Ark symbolized Jesus Christ.
It is Jesus Christ, the shining One from God, who died as the judgment for my sin, and because He did, in Him, I have rest, peace, and protection. Now, let me tie this into a neat little bow.
In Genesis Chap. 5 vv. 1-29, you see 10 names.
10 in the Bible symbolizes completion.
In those 10 names, we see the completion of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Those symbolically reveal the following truth:
Mankind is appointed to die, but whoever possesses the shining One from God, who descended from Heaven who was dedicated to the will of God who was made low by the manger and the Cross who died by the sword in judgment in my place, will have peace, rest, and protection in God.
How does the New Testament say it?
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Romans 10:9–10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
AMEN!!!! The entire Bible reveals to us what God has done so that Adam can have rest, peace, and protection.
