The Case is Closed
The Case is Closed
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
The issue is being righteous before God. This is the issue as far as God is concerned. They all have nothing to offer God to be justified before God. They are all condemned under sin.
The issue was a heart issue. Just like the Jews, we have God’s Word. But where is God’s Word for most Christians?
Under their arm pit.
Everyone is of equal position, guilty and under sin.
Jew had the advantage in the opportunity in the law. But they are not “better” because of the Adamic disadvantage.
Both Jew and Gentile are under sin.
“Under the weather”
We are under one thing or the other.
Under sin = In Adam
We are bearing the consequences of being under Adam
Under grace = In Christ
There is not the option of under my good works, because it doesn’t exist.
Hamartia sin
3.1 MEANS “MISSING THE MARK”
3.2 INCLUDES HITTING SOME WRONG MARK
Like a basketball player hitting the hoop for the wrong team
3.3 IN GOSPELS ALMOST ALWAYS USED IN A CONTEXT SPEAKING OF FORGIVENESS OR SALVATION
For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
The wrath of God (present)
The total depravity of man
Depravity - man being under sin
Depravity is not about human good, not the lack of or the having of.
Man in himself can’t please God - Depraved
Totally depraved - A line on a board not tight, string example. The string in and of itself can not make itself straight.
Now Paul pull most of the scripture he pulls here is from Psalms, and some from Isaiah.
10 As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
There is no one that that is righteous
There is nothing we can do
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
We don’t even look for God. PSA 14:1-3 & Psa 53:1-3 almost say the same thing.
1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
3 They have all turned aside,
They have together become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one.
20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good
And does not sin.
There is no one, there is none.
The opposite of being depraved is right here.....
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Paul is showing that man fails to keep the commandment.
Paul is showing us that man fails to keep the commandments towards God.
AND
Paul is showing us that man fails to keep the commandments towards man.
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—
Does anyone ever follow God with everything in their soul? No. We all have idols.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Unprofitable - Useless
How is man made in the likeness and image of God, and man is worthless?
Man has fallen short.
What is salt that has lost it’s saltiness worth?
Good is not man’s good, but God’s good. Man without God can’t do God’s good.
Hoof and Mouth Disease
The mouth
13 “Their throat is an open tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
Word of wisdom, don’t say any thing that you can’t sign your name on. If we start a conversation with “someone said, I heard, the rumors are… It is best we stop ourselves right there. Gossip is poison. It is ok to say “sorry, I don’t feel comfortable talking about this, or excuse me I need to go.”
7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression;
Under his tongue is trouble and iniquity.
28 A perverse man sows strife,
And a whisperer separates the best of friends.
6 A fool’s lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calls for blows.
7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul.
The mouth…
How bad is man? Man is totally depraved. How bad are the things that come out of people’s mouths?
Taking God’s name in vain?
The Feet
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
Look at a night out on the town. People go out to dinner and drink. They go clubbing. As the night continues, they continue to drink. They allow themselves to jeopardize themselves as the night continues. Come the next, how many people are in jail? How many people are in regret? How many people are hurt? All for a night of fun.
And how many people just do wash, rinse, repeat?
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait to shed blood;
Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,
Keep your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely, in vain the net is spread
In the sight of any bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of its owners.
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate.
10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
27 The fear of the Lord prolongs days,
But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
26 In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.
27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from the snares of death.
33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,
And before honor is humility.
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life,
And he who has it will abide in satisfaction;
He will not be visited with evil.
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans in Outline No. 35
Romans in Outline No. 35
1.1 THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
2.1 To speak to those under the law
Romans 3:19a 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law
2.2 To shut up the mouths of men
Romans 3:19b that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
3.1 DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS (Barnhouse)
4.1 Are you born again?
4.2 If you were killed today and met God at the gate of heaven,
what response would you give if He asked,
“What right do you have to come into My heaven?”
What would you say?
3.2 THREE POSSIBLE ANSWERS
4.1 “My life and good works”
(What do you think a real Christian is?)
BUT Rom 3:20
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
BUT Galatians 2:16b
16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
4.2 “Not a thing to say”
Job — Job 40:4-5
4 “Behold, I am vile;
What shall I answer You?
I lay my hand over my mouth.
5 Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
Habakkuk — Hab 3:16
16 When I heard, my body trembled;
My lips quivered at the voice;
Rottenness entered my bones;
And I trembled in myself,
That I might rest in the day of trouble.
When he comes up to the people,
He will invade them with his troops.
John — Rev 1:17
17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.
4.3 “The blood of Jesus Christ has been charged to my account”
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
2.3 To prove the world guilty before God
1.2 THE RESULT OF THE LAW
2.1 Not to justify
How were people saved in Old Testament times?
3.1 ANSWER #1:
“By Bringing sacrifices to God.”
BUT: Heb 10:4
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
3.2 ANSWER #2:
“By keeping the Law”
BUT: Rom 3:19
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
2.2 To give the knowledge of sin
3.1 BECAUSE THE LAW SHOWS THE HOLINESS OF GOD
15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
3.2 BECAUSE THE LAW SHOWS THAT SIN CONTRASTS WITH THE HOLINESS OF GOD
19 What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one.
3.3 BECAUSE THE LAW SHOWS THE STANDARD THAT MUST BE ACHIEVED TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord,
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Note: How were people saved in Old Testament times?
ANSWER #3: “By faith”
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
Hebrews 11 (21 times) Faith
Hebrews 11 (NKJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.
5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.
24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31 By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.
32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raised to life again.
Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
Romans 3:19-2019 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
