HISTORY...

we are using verse 17 for our focus but to get the true vision of the text we need to look at the complete story...
this includes verses 13 thru 17
Mark 2:13–17 “Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them. As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him. Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.””
(work text)…TALK, PREACH....
The Jewish people rightly considered them traitors because they worked for the Roman government and had the force of Roman soldiers behind them to make people pay taxes. They were the most visible Jewish collaborators with Rome.
Here lies the scandal — Jesus was the friend of sinners. Of course, the sinners knew this and responded to Jesus’ love and friendship: for there were many, and they followed Him.
The Pharisees objected to Jesus keeping company with sinners. The Pharisees were a respected conservative religious group but were often at odds with Jesus.
let’s walk thru the text

POINTS,,,

Mark 2:17 “When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.””
Jesus’ answer was both simple and profound. Jesus was the physician of the soul, and it made sense for Him to be with those who were sick with sin.
Mark B. Jesus Is Lord over Relationships (2:13–17)

Jesus was not saying here that the scribes were not sick. He stated that a person needs to realize his own sickness and sin first. Doctors’ offices are not generally crammed with healthy people clamoring to see the doctor. It is only when they realize their sickness that they turn to the doctor. So it is with the sin-sick soul and the Lord Jesus.

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: What the Servant Offers You (Mark 2:1–3:12)

In Jesus’ day, as in the days of the prophets, there were those who claimed to bring spiritual healing to the people, but whose remedies were ineffective. Jeremiah rebuked the priests and false prophets of his day because they were worthless physicians who gave only a false hope to the nation.

The Good News for any of us who feel off the wall, out to lunch, or incapacitated is that Jesus, the Great Physician, came especially to help people like us

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: What the Servant Offers You (Mark 2:1–3:12)

But there are three kinds of “patients” whom Jesus cannot heal of their sin sickness: (1) those who do not know about Him; (2) those who know about Him but refuse to trust Him; and (3) those who will not admit that they need Him. The scribes and Pharisees were in that third category, as are all self-righteous sinners today. Unless we admit that we are sinners, deserving of God’s judgment, we cannot be saved. Jesus saves only sinners (Luke 19:10).

look at the B clause now...
Mark 2:17 “When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.””
Jesus is the perfect doctor to heal us of our sin.
He is always available.
He always makes a perfect diagnosis.
He provides a complete cure.
He even pays the doctor’s fee.

If the world had been righteous, there had been no occasion for his coming, either to preach repentance, or to purchase forgiveness.

but we know....
Exalting Jesus in Mark Jesus’ Mission

In essence Jesus says, “To those who think they are righteous I have nothing to say. To those who know they are sinners in need of salvation I have come, to heal them and call them to Myself.” You must see yourself as lost before you can be saved. You must know you are spiritually sick before you can be spiritually healed. You must know you are spiritually dead in sin before you can be made spiritually alive by a Savior!

CONCLUSION..

thru all of our infirmities, Christ is the ultimate healer.
and the biggest infirmity we have is sin.
and he has made a way for us to be healed from that.....
