Good Morning
Good Morning
September 1st is the beginning of the new church year. We are having a high attendance day. We will have coffee and donuts that day. I you are able, we would love to have you here to worship with us.
What wonderful weather we had the last couple of days! Can’t believe that it is August in Oklahoma!
I was reading through my insurance policy the other day and found out that if someone breaks in and steals my blanket in the middle of the night, I’m not covered.
Today we are going to be in Mark 6:7-13. Last week we saw Jesus go home, and He didn’t get the homecoming that we would of thought that He would have. They were amazed at His teaching, but almost at the same time they were angry. They new Jesus as a boy and young man, why was He acting like He was some Honored Rabbi! He didn’t have any formal training. To them He was just Jesus, the carpenter. We talked about the 2 things that the Bible said amazed Jesus, great faith and great unbelief. What camp are you in? Today we are going to discuss Jesus sending out the 12 on there own for the first time. We are going to see the instructions He gives them and the result of their obedience.
Please stand as we read God’s Word.
7 And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; 8 and He instructed them that they were to take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belt—9 but to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not wear two tunics.” 10 And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. 11 Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 And they went out and preached that people are to repent. 13 And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.
Pray
This is the first time that the disciples had been sent out on their own. Up to this point they were just observers and helpers for Jesus. Now they would be on their own.
Jesus calls before He sends
He sent them out in pairs. Ecc 4:9-12
9 Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor; 10 for if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up! 11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.
Also in the OT law, for evidence to be admissible in court, it had to be from 2 or more people.
15 “A single witness shall not rise up against a person regarding any wrongdoing or any sin that he commits; on the testimony of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.
Jesus gave them authority over the unclean spirits, demons. They had not recieved the Holy Spirit yet. They could not cast out demons or heal yet. For the first time they would get to do the miracles that they had seen Jesus do!
Jesus gave them specific instructions on what to take! Nothing. The only thing that He allowed them to take was a walking staff.
No bread.
No bag. The word used here for bag is the beggars bag. They were not to beg for food or money
No money.
They were to wear sandals. They would be doing a lot of walking and the sandals would protect their feet.
They were not allowed to put on 2 tunics. They second tunic was used for when travelers had to sleep out side, they would cover up with the second tunic. It was also a sign of wealth.
Jesus told them that when the enter a place and someone offers for you to stay with them, stay there until you leave. This was important because when they first got to town, people wouldn’t know who or why they were there. If a poor person was to offer for them to stay with them, they were to stay with them the whole time. Once they started healing and casting out demons, they would gain notoriety and the wealthy would offer for them to stay with them. They were not to look for better accommodations. They were to stay where they said they would stay and honor their word.
Jesus told them that if a place did not receive them, they were to leave and dust their sandals off as they left. This was a sign that showed that the people had rejected Jesus and the gospel. It was not an uncommon sign. Traveling Jewish merchants would do this when they were leaving a Gentile region before they entered back into Jewish areas. It was a symbol of them shaking off the filthiness of the Gentiles. This sign would have been unusual for a Jew to do this to another Jew. They were not to stay and try to convince them to believe.
The disciples went and obeyed Jesus. Look at what they preached.
Repent!
They didn’t preach that Jesus is love, or live your best life now. They preached that they were sinners and that they needed to repent. There can be no salvation if there is not first repentance. We don’t hear repentance preached a lot any more in the american church. We don’t want to offend people. Jesus was offensive to the Jews. So much so that they killed Him. He was not rude, but honest. He told the truth. We need to tell the truth.
The disciples cast out demons and healed many people! They were obedient and so was God. When we do what God tells us to do, He is faithful to do what He says He will do. We can’t live our lives for this world and then get mad when God doesn’t bless us.
This sending was to prepare the disciples for when Jesus would not be with them. It was to show them that they did not have to worry about provision. God is our provision.
When God calls us to Him for a specific reason, He will provide all we need.
He will equip us to do what He wants us to do
We should not be worrying about our basic needs in this life. Philippians 4:9, Matthew 6:25-33, Philippians 4:11. God is our provision. He loves us and will provide for us.
