Everyone loves a good origin story! What’s your favorite?
I think mine is Miles Morales’ Spider Man.
Tonight we are looking at our origin story.

God’s creation, crowned by humanity, was very good!

The main Character

This is God’s story.
Don’t you hate it when telling a story and someone jumps in and hijacks it? They just start telling their own story without even letting you finish yours. It’s even worse if their story is cooler than yours. You start, “I was eating at the new Long John Silvers” and then they jump in, “Seafood? That reminds me of the time I went diving with great white sharks!”
1:1
We have a tendency to try and put ourselves at the center of the story of the Bible, but the Bible is not about humanity, it’s about God creating humanity and pursuing and saving humanity after humanity rebelled against Him. It’s about Him!
Colossians 1:16 ESV
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
So remember that. In everything. This is God’s story and He has given us a major roll in it. We need to acknowledge that, humble ourselves, and give Him our hearts and our praise!
Now that we’ve got that, let’s move on to everything else!

The first five and a half days were good

God creates everything except humans in the first five and a half days, and calls it all good.
I put a new “infotainment” system in my truck Monday… Each step along the way I’d pause for a second and look at it and feel good about it…
verses 1-5, breeze through the rest
And this is the pattern of creation.
Some questions that people have
What did God use to create all this stuff?
Were they actual days?
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter.
He created the sun after He created light? And there were days before the sun and moon?
The sun doesn’t make or control light, God does. And it doesn’t control the calendar, God does.
God made all this stuff from nothing. That’s incredible! Enjoy it! Praise Him for it!
Psalm 19:1 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Join in with creation in declare his glory!
But He hadn’t done the best part yet!

The last piece made it all very good

Humanity is God’s most special and loved piece of creation.
He made us different than everything else. We are, literally, built different.
1:26-27
We have something to do because we are made in his image, to reflect Him. And He is a God of action, of doing.
He made us in a different way than He did everything else.
2:7
The care He took in creating us.
We are his image bearers. That’s a big deal. We honor and glorify Him by bearing his image well!
Kristen and I have three sons, our little image bearers. They honor us when they do good. When they do good, they make us look good. But when they do goofy stuff… When one of them falls inside of a trash can at McDonald’s (pause for people to look at my kids) it does not bring us honor!
Just kidding, that didn’t happen.
We are made to bear his image. But what does that look like? What did He make us to do?
One of my favorite answers to this question comes from the Westminster Shorter Catechism… But let’s look and see what it says here.
1:28, 2:15
He made us to work the ground, to have dominion over the rest of creation. This is before sin!
And He made us to multiply and fill the Earth. We need Eve!
2:18, 21-25
Marriage and family was instituted by God in creation. And the way He designed it here is the way we flourish, not any of the ways that our world is trying to come up with!
Fellas, we need the ladies. It’s not good for us to be alone!
Ultimately, all of creation has one purpose…
Romans 11:36 ESV
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Humanity, as the only part of creation bearing his image and the only part of creation given a job to do, is given the job to see that creation glorifies God by obeying Him from a loving a grateful heart.
God gave Adam a rule, one guideline…
2:16-17
He does this before sin! So it is included in what God calls good.
Spoiler alert for next week: We don’t…
Gospel

The last day

There’s one more day, but God didn’t create anything on this day…
2:1-3
Rest reminds us that we are dependent on God. That we don’t have the power within ourselves to go and go and go and do all things. We need to follow the example He set for us in his kindness.
