The Aftermath of conflict, Pt. II (Lesson 25) 9/3/24) and the review of 1st half of course

Introduction:

* Jesus Christ by His cross brought a fatal blow to Satan’s power.
* This lesson will show us the predicament of Satan from the outcome of His conflict with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Aim:

* To show the total defeat of Satan by Jesus.
* To summarize the conflict between Satan and Jesus Christ

Outline:

* Satan’s defeat is seen in all the conflict through the ages,
* Like the temptations: note down (Mt4:1-11, Lk4:1-13; Heb4:14-15) and let’s look up 1Cor15:55-56
1 Corinthians 15:55–56 NASB95
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;
* Or, note down the symbolic presentation of the victorious Christ in (Rev12:9ff, 17:14) and let’s look up Rev19:11-16
Revelation 19:11–16 NASB95
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. 13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. 15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
* Satan’s defeat is shown to be complete and definite
* Death blow at Calvary (turn to Col2:14-15; Ref Act2:23ff)
Colossians 2:14–15 NASB95
14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
* Serpent’s works are destroyed (no power over death and those who are in Christ Jesus) (look up Heb4:14-15; ref 1Jn3:8 which we looked at a couple of weeks ago).
Hebrews 4:14–15 NASB95
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
* Satan has no claim on Christ or those who are His that are cleansed by the blood of the lamb (note down Rom6:1-18, and turn to Rom8:1-3)
Romans 8:1–3 NASB95
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,
* Jesus Christ never sinned, therefore death, the sting of death could not hold Him (ref: 1Cor15:56)
* But it was Christ’s death that brought the deathblow to Satan (turn to Heb2:14-15; then ref back to Col2:14-16)
Hebrews 2:14–15 NASB95
14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
* It was on the cross that Jesus bruised Satan’s head (remember that being his power/authority) and bruised His own heal (dying himself in the sinners stead) (Stop! slow down read and bring out questions from Rom5:1-11 then turn to Rev1:17-18
Revelation 1:17–18 NASB95
17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.
* Again we will close with God’s purpose and promise fulfilled by Jesus redemptive act on the cross (turn to 1Jn3:8)
1 John 3:8 NASB95
8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
Review of the first half of the class:
* The plan of God: It is redemption; It is the central theme of the bible; Redemption is the concern in both the Old Testament and the New Testament; old covenant and the new covenant.
* The Old presents sinless man, to fallen man, to inability of man to save himself
* The New represents Gods way of Redemption in Christ and His church
* God, His purpose and predetermination
* Understanding God’s character and nature helps us to understand then God’s scheme of redemption
* God has a plan, a purpose, a predetermined plan, a predestined plan, or a foreordained plan to redeem man.
* God, His creating of all things
* Eternal God, Creator of all things brought man into the world.
* Placed his greatest creation in best place (the garden) to have fellowship
* Man, His rebellion
* Adam’s selfish act, resulting in the fall of man
* Sin and death entered into the world and
* Jesus act of righteousness was the way sinful man could be reconciled to God.
* Man, His rebellion (sin and its consequences)
* Sin is rebellion against God, it defies His holiness, dares His justice, despises His goodness and diverts His grace
* Sin dominates, debases and destroys for sin shackles, soils, scars and separates
* Christ Crucified defeats sin’s power, for sinful rebellious man, needs redemption for his sin and Christ crucified does that.
* Man, His need righteousness
* The righteousness of God is not achieved by the works of man, It is God’s work of Righteousness through Christ that we obtain life eternal
* Justice declares that the unrighteous must pay the price, and it is only in Jesus Christ and His cross that we find the grounds for us. For we are declared righteous, are justified only by the True righteouness of God that came from Heaven, Jesus Christ!
* Man, His need Propitiation
* Propitiation is the way God’s wrath is satisfied and sin’s are forgiven
* It is through propitiation that the penitent sinners is made righteous through obedience of faith
* God’s plan, God’s way, God’s provision is Jesus Christ and there is no other way.
* Man, His need redemption
* Christ is our Redeemer
* There was a cost for our redemption, it was the cross, the crucifixion. Instead of our eternal death
* Man, His need: Reconciliation
* Reconciliation is that which God has done that man could not do for himself.
* God provided the means of reconciliation
* Man, His need Salvation
* Salvation is provided through God’s mercy and grace. His predetermined, foreordained plan.
* Our great salvation is more than an event it is a process, it is freedom from past, victory over the present, and assurance of the future.
* Man, His need Sanctification
* Sanctification is initiated by Christ
* Sanctification is progressive, we grow in it
* Sanctification is the Outcome and Inseparable consequences of being born again.
* Sanctification is dependent upon the knowledge of God’s word and application of it.
* Man, His need: Glorification
* Let us suffer with Jesus so that we may be glorified with Him.
* Let us magnify God for His great wisdom and purpose
* Those He foreknew, foreordained, called, justified, and glorified!
* The eternal purpose of God: The Mystery Revealed
* God’s eternal purpose is purposed in Christ and made known to man
* The mystery is not mysterious, it is the thing revealed. Life, Immorality has been brought into light through the gospel of Jesus Christ
* The eternal purpose of God: The Mystery revealed (II)
* The relationship between the redeemed and the Redeemer is made known through the scripture
* God Himself, foreknew, and foreordained
* The Savior
* The Salvation message (the gospel)
* The saved
* Man’s original position and the two trees
* The creation of man is a historical even
* Adam and Eve, God’s original creation were placed in a perfect environment
* Both Adam and Eve made a personal choice to disobey God, they fell away from life and fellowship with God.
* The fall
* The fall of man had certain implications
* A standard - no fall without a criterion of living
* A Law - no fall without an ordinance (or restraint)
* A regulation - No fall could take place without a model (of conduct)
* The fall was brought about by man’s sinful, selfish act.
* The fall and Satan
* We need to know and learn from history
* We need to be cognizant of the fact of Satan’s reality
* We need not be ignorant of His devices, strategies and tricks.
* The fall and man
* After the fall, man discovered himself the wrong and sinful act.
* Man tried to provide a covering for self, which was insufficient
* Man tried to hide from the Creator for He feared the holiness of God
* Man then tried to make excuses instead of accepting responsibility for act of selfishness, the sinful act.
* The Fall and God
* God is wholly righteous and just, and He punishes sin
* God is totally merciful and loving and provides covering for sin.
* God’s concern for man is the deliverance from sin
* God’s answer to the concern was His eternal plan, Jesus Christ the Righteous one to be the Savior of the World.
* The Fall and the law of sin and death
* Death is separation from God, the life of God, from eternal life.
* Death entered through one man, through sin
* Death was passed on to all men for all have sinned.
* God’s promise in Eden: The seed of Satan vs the seed of woman
* There is a struggle through history between the seed of Satan and the seed of woman
* God’s promise in Eden is redemption and that too is proven through the ages as the seed of woman is protected.
* Conflict throughout history
* Against all the odds at the apparent victory of Satan’s seed over the seed of woman, God protected the seed!
* Conflict throughout history, part II
* God almighty throughout all history shows His providential power in sustaining the seed of woman.
* Satan and his seed suffer defeat after defeat, yet he does not give up
* Conflict throughout history, part III
* Satan tried to render the promise of God (Redemption) valueless by the destruction of Eve’s posterity
* The providence of God was seen through singular individuals throughout the ages, Seth, Noah, etc.,
* The proposed enmity is seen throughout the ages, but the purpose of God stands, stands in Christ alone and His church was is indestructible.
* The aftermath of conflict - Pt. I
* Jesus is Master - That was, is his claim
* Jesus is Lord - His cross declares it
* Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified and resurrected Savior and Lord is the only begotten Son of God.
* The aftermath of conflict - Pt. II
* Jesus Christ lived a sinless life therefore the sting of death could not hold Him.
* Through His death Satan power was stripped away
* Through His death Satan’s head was head, that is his power and authority taken, and Jesus heal bruised by His sacrificial death on the cross
* By the cross, Christ has complete triumph over Satan and his forces.
This ends the first half of the course. The midterm exam will consist of one essay question that should be well through out and must include scriptures to back up your point.
We have seen in this first half of this course God’s scheme of redemption. So, here is the question. Why was redemption needed, how was redemption provided. Again, be sure when you write the essay that you use scriptures. The above is just a quick summary of the lessons we have done. You have a week to review the previous classes before taking the class time next week to write the essay.
