Importance of Ps. 2 Structure and History
There are 4 stanzas of 3 verses each.
Breakdown of those 4 stanzas and the NT commentary of those stanzas.
1-3
Acts 4:25–26 ESV
who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
4-6
This is God’s response to v1-3.
7-9
Acts 13:33 ESV
this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, “ ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’
Hebrews 5:5 ESV
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
10-12
This is a response to v 6-9.
Implications
Christ is right now the God of this world.
We are watching Christ conquering through the church.
Christ’s rule through the Church.
Nations, just like individuals, will suffer when they rebel against God.
This can be seen readily in the life of a person who rejects God. God will turn them over to their “vile affections” and they will find destruction because of their own sin.
God hates sin because sin is destructive to us. God loves humanity and therefore hates sin.
How long will Jesus need to reign on this earth? Ps 110 1
Psalm 110:1 ESV
The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Hebrews 2:8 ESV
putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
This indicates the kingdom of God is growing as the church grows. This will continue until everything is in subjection to Christ.
The last enemy that shall be defeated is death and that will take place at the return of Christ. 1 cor 15.25
1 Corinthians 15:25 ESV
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
1 Corinthians 15:26 ESV
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
Application.
Nations repent once a critical mass of individuals repent.
God’s rule is through the church and not through the governments. However the governments are required to kiss the son lest they be destroyed.
A nations prosperity is linked to the people obeying God’s word.
A person’s prosperity is likewise linked. We do believe in the prosperity gospel. It’s not a magic potion that you drink and are a billionaire, but it does create generational wealth, health, and prosperity. It requires hard work and obedience. It doesn’t mean you will be on a yacht in the Caribbean, but it does mean that your life will be truly blessed.
I believe in mustard seed prosperity gospel. When a new convert comes to Christ, a mustard seed of prosperity is given to them. If they keep their minds on Christ and their submission to Him, prosperity will follow. Study the Word and follow Christ.
This doesn’t mean that everyone will be monetarily prosperous, but it does mean that good things will come to those who love God. It doesn’t mean that bad things will not come. We live in a fallen world that is not yet fully transformed. Whatever state you are in is better in Christ. This is the prosperity we have. We are eternal beings and we live in the light of eternity. We don’t perish, we live because He lives.
