Q37 What duty has God given to every person? A37 God has given every person the duty to obey what He has revealed in His Word (Micah 6:8)
Interaction
(LET THEM ANSWER) What is a soldier’s duty? What about a doctor? What about a police officer?
Their duty is dependent upon their role and what is expected of them, right? Does God have a duty?
Of course He has a duty... He is under obligation to act as He has promised He will in His Word.
What are the duties of every single person? (EXPECT THEM TO ANSWER SOMETHING LIKE THE GOLDEN RULE OR OBEY THE 10 COMMANDMENTS)
Did you know that people were made in the image of God (ASK QUESTION 10)? We as image bearers must perfectly carry out our duty and for those that flawlessly, faultlessly and do this without fail we can spend eternity with God. That is an awesome privilege, a luxury of all luxuries...
Scripture Support
Psalm 15“A Psalm of David. O Yahweh, who may sojourn in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy mountain? He who walks blamelessly, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a reprobate (WICKED PERSON) is despised, But who honors those who fear Yahweh; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.”
Transition to Question and Answer
Does this match us? (MAYBE HIGHLIGHT SPEAKING TRUTH) Do we act like this? These things are our duty - the things God requires of every person. We must do these things faultlessly, flawlessly, perfectly every single time, every single day non stop up until we die. These things are our duty and every single one of us must do this because we are image bearers of God.
Question and Answer
So here is tonight’s question: Q37 What duty has God given to every person? A37 God has given every person the duty to obey what He has revealed in His Word Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does Yahweh require of you But to do justice, to love lovingkindness, And to walk humbly with your God?”
Restate
We as image bearers of God must reflect His character flawlessly. We must fulfill our duty to do what is right, to be faithful to Him and walk humbly in obedience to Him.
What happens to a soldier, or a doctor or a police officer that fails to do their duty? They get kicked out of the military, they lose their license, they might lose their badge… what should happen to us for failing to do our duty? Do we deserve to get to spend eternity with God when we have not done our duty?
Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Duty: Definition: A moral or legal obligation; a responsibility that one is required to do. Example: An employee has the duty to do what his or her boss tells them to do and on time. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 12:13 “The end of the matter, all that has been heard: fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the end of the matter for all mankind.”
Revealed: Definition: To make known something that was previously secret or hidden Example: An instruction manual reveals how to go about doing something correctly Scripture: Deuteronomy 29:29 ““The secret things belong to Yahweh our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
Justice: Definition: Being fair and reasonable - living in the way that matches God’s standard Example: A jury that evaluates all the evidence and decides if a defendant is guilty Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Execute justice for the orphan, Plead for the widow.”
Lovingkindness: Definition: A continuing love, one that doesn’t abandon another, a faithful compassion Example: A friend shows lovingkindness by not breaking promises to someone who has wronged them and continues to be their friend. Scripture: 2 Peter 3:9“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
Walk Humbly: Definition: To live in a way that aligns with what we say we believe - this involves acting with modesty and respect toward others. Example: A When you get an “A” on a test that everyone else failed but do not gloat, choosing instead to help others that did not do well Scripture: Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does Yahweh require of you But to do justice, to love lovingkindness, And to walk humbly with your God?”
So why does this matter
We are not allowed to close our mouths when we see injustice. We are not allowed to ignore what is sin - Does God? Nope Genesis 18:25““Far be it from You to do such a thing, to put to death the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do justice?””
We are not allowed to walk arrogantly, boastfully - no we are to walk in humility as Christ did. Philippians 2:7–8“but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
Will God count us perfect if we do these things? A better question to ask is will God ignore all the bad things we have done because we have done a couple of things good? No, He cannot and He will not. The only option then is to have Jesus take our penalty so we can receive His perfection. (GIVE THE GOSPEL)

People who study God typically describe God’s perfection by saying what He is not rather than what He is.
What is God not? He is unchanging (immutable/Faithful), He is not physical (incorporeal), He is not dependent upon anyone or anything (aseity), He cannot be fully comprehended (Incomprehensible) and also invisible.
God is perfect isn’t He? How is God perfect? (GO IN A CIRCLE ASKING THEM ALL TO DESCRIBE HOW GOD IS PERFECT)
He is so perfect that it is even hard to describe just how flawless He really is. He is utterly without error and faultless (ASK IF THAT IS UNDERSTANDABLE OR RELATABLE)
He tells us in His Word that He wants us to be with Him in eternity but we got to act like He does in His character - We can spend forever with Him if we are perfect too Matthew 5:48
Transition to Concept
Who here is perfect? Anyone here flawless? Faultless? Without sin? Did everything right, just on time, without a bad attitude all for God’s glory?
Anyone at all? Yep me neither… Let’s open Psalm 15
Psalm 15 LSB
A Psalm of David. O Yahweh, who may sojourn in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy mountain? He who walks blamelessly, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear Yahweh; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.
We expect mirrors to look like us don’t we? If a mirror doesn’t correctly reflect our image we get rid of it, don’t we. We can’t even act like we don’t know because He has written this in our conscience and in His Word. We know it and we must do it.
