last week you all was in the garden of Gethsemane and that is where we start tonight. last week Jesus and His diciple’s where in the garden and Judas , officers from the high priest , Pharisees and a detachment of troops . I’ve read this number could have been as many as 600 men. I’ve read many commentary’s that it was much less than that but none the less it was a lot of people and highly trained soldiers.
There is no doubt these guys had a fear of Jesus. when He said who He was they feel backwards . Not on there knees to worship Him but backwards in fear. This reminds me of what Karl spoke about Sunday. they knew He was . The had herd of Him , the had Heard His name, knew His reputation. many might have seen Him perform miracles. we know Judas did. Judas had been with Him from the start, but the did not know what He was . the did not except Him as the Christ , the Messiah. When He said to them I Am they fell backwards when He said He was God they couldnt stand.
After that Jesus tells them that they are there to arrest Him and not the deciples then Peter cuts off Malchus ear and Jesus rebuked Him because what Jesus was doing was the will of God but still no one but Jesus got arrested. It sounds to me like God was in charge of this event. they brought enough men to arrest all of them Peter cuts off the high
priest sevants ear and only Jesus got arrested and Jesus words were fullfelled . Of those whom You gave Me , I have lost none.
Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
This detachment of up to 5 or six hundred men . Jewish temple security, Roman soldiers arrest Jesus and tie him up
the take Him to Annas
this guy was a peace of work. He was a High Priest at one time and had a lot of political power.
“There is a passage in the Talmud which says: ‘Woe to the house of Annas! Woe to their serpent’s hiss! They are High Priests; their sons are keepers of the treasury; their sons-in-law are guardians of the Temple; and their servants beat the people with staves.’ Annas and his household were notorious.” (Barclay)
he was the power behind the thrown and probably had a big part in planing this
Caiaphas
nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.”
I dont know if you remember when we studied this. thanks to Pastor taking so long to get through the book of John. Caiaphas is the high priest and he prophesied this . This came from God. Caiaphas was willing to kill an innocent man not knowing he was fulfilling prophecy.
Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death.
this wasnt going to be a trial . This was going to be a lynching.
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
this was Peter and most likly John
we dont know why they followed. It could have been guilt from falling asleep or from running off. Peter might of because the Lord had rebuked him twice in the last few hours. It could be the wanted to know what the were doing to their Lord. i guess it doesnt really matter but the did follow. This could have been very dangerous for them but it seems there concern was Jesus.
now who ever the other deciple[John] was known to these people . so the girl at the gate let him in and he convinced her to let Peter in
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am not.”
Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
so peter walks through the gate that this servant girl is at. I dont want to say gaurding she was not a security officer. she could have called out and guards would have came running but she was not a guard..
she says” You are not also one of this mans disciples, are you?”here she says also ,so im assuming she new the first disciple was a follower of Jesus but Peter said I am not.
I dont know the reason Peter denied Jesus here . Im assuming fear. I guess he could have just wanted to get through the gate and not drawn attention to himself. she new the other man was a deciple but he had not just cut off a fellow servant of the high priest ear
then it says he went and stood by the fire with servants and officers who had made a fire. none of the other Gosphels record this. this is the prof some commentarys say that John is the second decipel because it seems like the author had a first hand account
The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”
Annas starts asking Jesus questions abought His docttrine and disciples. Annas didnt want facts to see if Jesus was guilty or innocent. he wanted the name of His diciples so he could arrest them and he wanted to speak so he could twist His words and convict HIm. This was not about justice. this was abought revinge and holding on to power. Truth didnt matter here. the were even willing to break there own laws. Healing on the sabbath what a travesty but trying convicting an exacuting an innocent man for what the thaught was personal gain. noithing to see here
“For the Talmud states, Sanhedrin. C. iv. S. 1, that-’Criminal processes can neither commence not terminate, but during the course of the day. If the person be acquitted, the sentence may be pronounced during that day; but, if he be condemned, the sentence cannot be pronounced till the next day. But no kind of judgment is to be executed, either on the eve of the Sabbath, or the eve of any festival.’” (Clarke)
then Jesus tells them Ive done noithing in private. Its all been in your temples and synagogues. there have been multipole witnesses. Questions them according to your laws. it dosent sound like inoccent until proven guilty was the way this court worked. This was guilty or not we are going to find you guilty
And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Jesus know more than got His defence out of His mouth and an unkown officer strikes Him with the palm of His hand. i was reading abougt this today and i read a commentary of the officer not being mentioned by name and the answer was
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
And they divided His garments and cast lots.
that made sence to me when I read it . there was know need to record his name. He didnt know what he was doing. he was convinced he was dealing with a guilty man. he was blindly doing what he was told
Jesus again broubht up there law . If you have evidence aginst me, bear witness to it but if you dont than you have no right to strike me.
at this point Annas had broken about every law the had about holding court. there was no witnesses it was at night one of his officers at struck a man that had not been convicted of in laws. this court was not abought justice
Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not!”
One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.
Peters denial of Jesus was recorded in all three Gosphels and like Karl spoke abought Sunday its an example of Jesus grace and mercy to us all. we have all failed in fallen short of the Glory of God but to those that have put there faith in Jesus you will be forgiving. if Jesus is the Lord of your life you are saved
So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”
He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”
And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
Jesus did not give up on Peter . He still had a job for Peter to do and He done it well . and evintually died for the Gosphel
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Peter was standing with these men getting warm being able to see Jesus from a distance and saw his face as he denide Him. dont you know this had to haunt Peter until He saw Jesus again. Jesus new what Peter was going to do . This didnt suprise Him. peter loved Jesus he was laking in courage.
so the men asked Peter agin if He was a deciple also. once again the new that John was a follower of Jesus and then a realitive of the man that peter cut his ear off said didnt I see you in the garden. this is the third time Paul sees Jesus face and the rooster crows.
Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.
it says peter vehemently denied Jesus but it wasnt a suprise
Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
isnt it awsome that Jesus knows our hearts even when our actions are not lining up
Both Peter and Judas felled Jesus through denile and betrayal the defferense between them is one brought his sin to Jesus the other took it to the grave
