GREET EVERYONE-
If I have not had a chance to meet you; My name is Scott and I am a follower of Jesus and have the privilege of serving Him as the Lead Pastor among the people of Stonewater Fellowship.
Our Vision:
We Desire see every follower of Jesus well equipped and fully deployed on the mission of Jesus.
What mission? - This questions leads us to articulate His mission for His church in a simple way.
Our Mission:
Is to engage people into a multiplying relationship with Jesus!
INVITATION
1 - When God People Pray
2- Baptism Class is Sep 8th
3 - Missions Team to Romania - Oct 3rd
LETS GRAB OUR BIBLES IF YOU HAVE ONE AND
Open it to Isaiah 52 as we look at a few verses from there as we continue in our current preaching series “The Super Natural Church”
Exposing what God says about the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.
This morning we take a deep deep dive into the Gift of healing and Miracles.
And what we have been exposed to so far is that the gifts, all the gifts, have three main purposes.
Glorify God -
Build-up - Strengthening by adding to numerically - The Church
How does that happen - They are used for the Common Good -
in other words the benefit of Everyone.
Everyone say “Benefit of Everyone”
PRAYER OVER SERIES
is and has been that as we Expose What God says in His word about these gifts of the Holy Spirit
Ia that all of us would come to the scripture and stand on it alone, at face value, for what it says in order to form what we believe about these gifts and what we do in, with and around these gifts.
and as we do that one of two effects would happen on our intimate life and walk with Jesus.
These effects that I have been praying for can be easily under one umbrella - Change.
1st Change- Some of us find our selves boundaried by the scripture. What we believe and how we handle these things needs to be limited by what God says in His word.
2nd Change - Is that others of us will be set free from teaching that is in error and not based on what the bible says at face value.
Set free from unbiblical limits.
Set free from any negative effects in us experiencing the very power of God.
Set free so that we can in experience the presence of God way as described in the scriptures.
ALL of this under the complete blanket of Unity in Christ as we lock arms together in loving relationships and advance the Gospel together in every thing we do.
PRAYER OVER MESSAGE
Is that we would come to realize when the Gift of healings and miracles really is that Paul is speaking of and How many forms those can take.
With the understanding of what ultimate healing is and is meant to be.
ENGAGEMENT –
If I said to you the word Articulate - What goes through your mind.
If I said to you “this person is a very articulate person.” I think what would go through your mind that “This is a person who speaks very well”
To be articulate means “A person who has the ability to speak fluently and coherently”
Here is the funny part - There is also a word that we use to describe someone who can speak well.
We say things like :Their articulation makes them very articulate”
Here is the funny part: WE can so easily think that describing someone speech as Articulate is simply a describing their Articulation.
And we think that that is all there is.
WE might use other words to describe their speech - Eloquent, Fluent, Effective, Persuasive - But usually we think that they are ultimately using great articulation to be able to speak the way they speak.
When we do that we miss the fullness of what the ingredients of good speaking really are.
Here is the reality -
To Be a Person who is Articulate - you need 2 main ingredients -
One is Articulation - the ability to form clear and distinct sounds in speech
The Second Ingredient is a word that many of us may never heard of. That is we must have good Diction.
Diction is the choosing of words or phrases - WE must have both - Good articulation and Good diction to be an articulate person.
TENSION
What can so easily happen to us is we think in very singular terms when it comes to language.
When we take this in to our study of God’s word we might be to limited in what we understand form the scriptures.
I love what Wayne Grudem says and I would echo this sentiment -
The Scriptures are Infallible - Meaning they are incapable of making a mistake in the subjects that they are written to address.
And they are Inerrant - meaning they are without error in their original forms.
But our ability to completely and totally understand them and interpret them, in their entirety is not infallible and inerrant. We may understand Parts that way but there are things the scripture speaks of that we need some help on.
The Subject of healing is one of those.
UNPACKING
The Passage from Isaiah that Mike read for us this morning is the Gospel - delineated for us and predicted for the people of God some 700 years or so before Jesus actually showed up.
and Right here in Verse 5 we get this sentence that is a commonly referred to text that says :By His wounds we are healed
And in some circles of Christianity - Faithful brothers and sisters - Claim this as the consequential Scripture for Physical Healing.
But here is the interesting part -
If we just look at vs 5 alone there is an indication that this may not have very much if anything to do with physical Healing but rather the healing of our Soul.
Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
One of the things that we must look at when trying to understand what the scripture is talking about and to do that properly is look at the literary context and the biblical context and ask what was the original writer trying to get across.
and when we back away from verse 5 and take a broader look we might come to understand this has nothing to do with physical healing.
VS5
Pierced for our transgressions (our rebellion)
Crushed for our Inequity (our guilt)
VS6
YHWY Laid upon him the Iniquity (guilt) of us all
VS9
No guilt in Him - No violence and no deceit.
VS10
YWHY Will to crush Him
His soul makes an offering for guilt.
VS11
His anguish will satisfy
He bears Guilt
VS12
Pours out his Soul to death
numbed among the transgressors.
Bor the sins of many
makes intersession for the Transgressors.
In the whole council of just this this passage speaks of The healing that we receive by His wounds is not spoken of in healing diseases or infirmities of the Body -
This is healing the Soul - This is healing the Relationship with Go by bearing our sin, Bearing our guilt - Making intersession for us as rebels against a Holy, Right and perfect God.
This is the healing that His wounds earned us The Healing of our Soul and the reconciliation of of our relationship to our creator.
This healing is completely miraculous and infarct the biggest becasue what God did is to take us from Death - Dead in our trespasses and Sin to Life - Making us alive in Christ - New creatures - Created in Christ.
LUKE 10
WE cannot escape the fact that Physical Healing both in a Miraculous way and in the making well kinds of ways are intertwined in the Scriptures oth in the OT and in the NT.
In Luke 10 there is this very interesting Historical account -
72 Jesus followers are sent out -
Ever gone to the dealership and purchased a Car - What do they want you to do before you try to negotiate the math- Test drive.
This is what Jesus was sending these people out on a Test drive.
VS9
jesus says
Luke 10:9 ESV
9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
Heal the Sick -
I think one of the ways we can become single in our interpretation of words in the Bible is we can easily make assumptions that there is an instantaneous like miraculous healing every time the Bible says Heal or healed.
This may not be the case.
The Word Jesus Uses here in this passage is a Greek word that we get an English words From -
Therapueo -
Any guesses? Yea Therapy
It is a word that expresses a willingness to serve relationally in the case of someone in need. To care for the sick, to treat medically.
This does not mean that people were not healed quickly or brought to health rapidly - But what it does means is there is a relationship there and there is care that is given.
The 72 go and do what jesus says - Time Goes by - Jesus says some other things.
The 72 come back to Jesus and watch what happens.
VS17
Luke 10:17 ESV
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”
Even the demons are subject to us.
Not only did we heal - Not only did we proclaim the kingdom was near - Even the Demons were subject ot us.
Watch Jesus response -
Don’t be impressed - Don’t rejoice that the demons were subject to you. Rejoice in your salvation.
In other words Jesus was saying - It aint about you - Keep your eye on the ball - Keep the main thing the main thing.
You Might be asking: “Pastor was the healing miraculous and instant?”
My answer “Maybe” but what is did have was the ingredient of care and relationship.
Ya Jesus did a whole lot of healing -
SO quickly lets recap a few -
MATTHEW CHAPTER 8
AA roman centurion approaches Jesus and asks jesus to heal His paralyzed Servant.
Jesus says: I will come Heal Him - Heal = Therapueo
I will come and relationally care for him to heal Him.
Centenarian says - No NO I am not worthy for you to com to my house.
I have men that follow my commands - Just say the words and it will be done -
Jesus says : I have not seen that amount of Faith - Trust - in all of Israel - Go let it be done
Last line says :and the servant was healed -
That healed is a Greek word I can pronounce but it is not the therapy one - it means - TO cause someone to be healed - This is the miraculous kinds and it is only used when Jesus heals long distance.
MATTHEW CHAPTER 12
The withered Hand
Jesus is in the Synagogue challenging the teachers of the Law and He asks a question:
Is it lawful to heal on the Sabath? Therapueo - Relational care for someone to heal them?
Jesus then restores the mans withered hand - Restored means Restored to a previous condition. That is different than Healed.
MATTHEW CHAPTER 15
A Canaanite woman come to Jesus and Begs for Him to deliver her daughter who is severely oppressed by a demon.
Jesus said - I came for the lost sheep of Israel - He then tells her something about kids bread and dogs -
She says - Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall form the master table.
Jesus says :your faith is great - Your trust is great” It is done.
The Last line says : Her daughter was healed instantly - - Same word with the centurion connected to long distance miracle healing.
MATTHEW CHAPTER 17
A Dad come to Jesus and kneels before Him and says- My son has siezures that throw him into the water and the fire and your disciples could not heal Him. - Heal = Therapueo
Jesus says “ Bring the boy to me”
Jesus rebukes the demon and the boy is healed instantly -
Therapueo -
You see healing Even jesus healing, when in person, is done in the context of relationship, care and service. - For the common good.
CORINTH
We get to Corinth
Paul Begins Chapter 12 with - No Concerning Spiritual Things - interesting that He doesn not say - Phenomenal things - He does not say miraculous things - He does not even say in this passage Powerful things. He says Spiritual things. I do not want you to be “uniformed” I don’t want you to be “Ignorant” some of our versions will say.
Watch how He begin this. Watch his desire for the people God has given Him to influence and help them grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus.
Watch -
When you were Pagans - This means Gentile - unbelievers - people who worshiped and followed fake Gods - When you were doing that - You were led astray by others to MUTE IDOLS.
Mute Idols - What does that mean?
Paul certainly was talking about the carved images and other forms of physical idols that certainly could not speak.
But what Idols do we have today that can not speak but that we certainly are led by others to idol.
Money - Power - Prestige, Achievement, College degrees - Material stuff -
None of it can speak - But what it can do and what Paul was indicating to them is These idols of our culture can make us feel is it all about us.
Jesus told the 72 its is not about you its about eternity.
The Idols of our culture are there specifically to satisfy our Egos and fill us with pride.
Watch what Paul then does in Vs 3 to reinforce Jesus framework that it is not about us.
1 cor 12:3
1 Corinthians 12:3 ESV
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
This is all about the Glory of God - Loved ones God wont share his glory!
This is also why He says ALL the gifts are from God and VS 7 ALL of them are for the Common Good. Look at Jesus gifts - ALL of the common good of all humanity.
Paul is Over emphasizing that it cannot be about US
SO we get to verse 9-10
1 Corinthians 12:9–10 ESV
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
Let’s start with the “Working of Miracles”
The two words we need to grab hold of are Working - Which in the language of the NT means - well Working - It means Active - Being active. or Doing something.
In other words “Working”
The Other words is Miracles - That works in the NT means Power -
Activity of Power - is the working of miracles -
And through out the Bible it comes in all different forms and we see them often and frequently .
The OT is Focused on the Power of God - The NT is focused on the Power of Christ -
The Power of Christ to be Christ -
The Power of Christ to Transform -
The power of Christ to be Risen -
The Power of Christ to forgive Sins, To reconcile sinners - To Make dead one alive and to comeback one day and reign and rule forever.
There are Many Many ways - Being active in Power is shone in the New Testament among God’s people and sometimes they are more simple that we can imagine.
Here among the People of Stonewater - When we lock arms and serve out community and a family receives School Supplies when they do not have the resources to get them . That is working in Power for them!
When we lock arms and adopt Venezulian Children through our Ministry Partner Manna for the nations - They get fed when there is no food and that is working in power for them .
When we adopt Habitat for Humanity families and we provide Christmas and Meals when they have No resources to get them - There is activity in Power for them .
When A Child Gets a Christmas Box on the other side of the Globe and He doesn't even know what Christmas is all about. And he open the box and not only gets the contents that help for to day He reads the Gospel in his own language and it is the gift that Heals for all eternity - That is Activity in Power for them!
Remember The working of Miracles is not for you - It is for the person who need a miracle.
One of the Biggest ways of Action in Power is sharing the Gospel - and the Spirit falls and conversion comes and new life happens right in front of you.
HONDURAS BICYCLE COUPLE
That aint for you - That aint about you - That is all about God's working and It was for the Person who was lost and now is found and God gets all the Glory!
And when we put ourselves on the front Row and surrender all to Him for Him to spend out lives for his glory we are changed - Our faith is built - Our perspective changes - our appetite for God and the things of God becomes never satisfied - and we want Him more and more and more to do His thing and for him to get All the glory.
NOW to Gifts of Healing -
When Paul says Gifts of Healing He speaks it in the Plural - Gifts - Indicating that there are many variations of Healing - Gifts - Plural
When Paul uses the word Healing it is a words in the Greek that is used only once in the whole New Testament -
Here is what this word means - Gifts of healing means to have the capacity to cause someone to become healed to cause someone to be able to be healed. Like to set them up in a condition where they can see healing and recovery in their life.
How does this happen and what does this look like? -
in a practical sense Dr’s and Nurses - They place a person in an environment or conditions where they become able to heal.
In the Spiritual Prayer - Prayer deals with the Spiritual issues that can cause someone to be now be able to heal -
the WORD of God - Counseling in the Scripture - Sets someone up in the mental and spiritual and physiological conditions which they are able to heal.
Re:Engage is a prime example on how we as the body of Christ - See Gifts of healing coming into marriages.
All of this, when excersized by the Church - Who is the Church? (WE are the Church?) ultimately is focused on the Ultimate healing of the soul.
Loves ones we must realize that every physical healing that Jesus ever did and that the Church has been witness two for the last 2000 years is now in the ground and has been returned to dust.
The only healing that lasts is the healing of the soul that Isaiah is speaking of.
WORSHIP TEAM RETURNS
Watch what James says: When James writes about the Elders anointing the sick - James 5:14
James 5:14–15 ESV
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
The Prayer of Faith will save the one who is sick.
Same word Jesus uses when He speaks of “being saved”
Same words that Paul uses when He speaks of being saved.
Look at what James says: And The Lord will raise Him up!
Who will raise Him up?
Yes the Lord -
Loves ones -IT is all about Him and His glory and His power and His working. Ultimately his desire is that the soul of every man be healed and they would come to trust Him and turn to him in repentance.
And so let us pray Like the people in Acts chapter 4 - who prayed - Lord - grant to your servants to continue to speak with Boldness the gospel to anyone, anytime, anywhere. All the while you stretch out your hand to heal and signs and wonders are done through the name of your Holy Servant Jesus - Give your church boldness to proclaim your Gospel to people
AMEN -

FOOT WASHING
In John Chapter 13 -
Jesus is on His way to the Cross - This is a time that is in between His entry into Jerusalem and the Cross
in fact it was right after the last Supper.
Jesus has His 12 disciples and These are the one who will lead and expand His church after He ascends to the father and Sends the holy Spirit.
After Supper Jesus began to was His disciples Feet.
The Overarching reason that Jesus washed their feet was to give them an example of leading from a servants heart. Displaying for them His love and dedication to them.
Jesus had been training them and calling them to be Devoted, Sacrificial, servant leaders.
Jesus Said as He finished washing their feet. John 13:14-15
John 13:14–15 ESV
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
And so “foot washing each others feet has become something that the church has done in different places and for different reasons for the last 2000 years.
We as your Elder team do it this morning as a sign of our humility towards each other, our willingness to serve one another and our dedication and commitment to each other.
After we wash each others feet we will each one sign our Elder Covenant - as we all begin our renew our dedication to serve Jesus and one another faithfully as Elders.
Afterwords we will ask you guys to come up and lay your hand on us and Dan Peter will lead us all in prayer.
