Opening Scriptures:
Deuteronomy 30:1–10 KJV
And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee. And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
Okay let’s break this down:
First of all who is the audience? Ans: The Israelites, all of the tribes of Israel. Is he talking to us? Not really, unless you profess yourself to be a Hebrew Israelite, because there is a movement that has taken steam called “The Black Hebrew Israelites” and they believe that all blacks that were brought over from Africa to America are the descendants of Hebrew Israelites.
They believed that when Rome came in to destroy the temple and the city of Jerusalem, that many Jews fled to Africa and took up residency in West-Africa. They believe that after that they were brought over in ships because the scripture that says:
Deuteronomy 28:68 KJV
And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
But watch this right here:
They emphasize the first part of the text. But what does the last part of the text say? “AND NO MAN SHALL BUY YOU”. That alone disproves what they said because our ancestors were sold in droves!
So they look at the fact that we came over on ships…..and they hyper focus on that fact. But again what about the rest of the scripture…..because when God speaks all of it comes to past, not some of it or half of it.
Let’s look at it from the NASB:
Deuteronomy 28:68 NASB95
“The Lord will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way about which I spoke to you, ‘You will never see it again!’ And there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.”
Let’s look at it from other translations as well (NLT,
It say you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies.
Our ancestors did not offer themselves up to be slaves.
We were taken from our homeland, taken from our families and our tribes, put on auction blocks, beaten into subjection, put in chains and stocks, and sold against our will!!!
My thing is this, if you know anything about the history of the Jews you know that according to scripture they had a written law and an oral law. Tradition was passed down orally. FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS!!! IF WE REALLY WERE JEWS WHY WASN’T IT PASSED DOWN TO US WHO OUR TRUE IDENTITY WAS.
See the thing with me is this, I am a descendant of the Hairston Clan. It is the biggest African American family in the United States of American because those who were enslaved and sold to the Hairstons took on their last name. They had at least 5 plantations in Virginia, several in North Carolina, and several in Georgia. And the thing about us Hairstons is that we know all of our family history because it is written in BOOKS!!!! So you cannot convince me that I’m a Jew….and it doesn’t matter if I’m a Gentile or Jew because Paul said:
Romans 3:9 KJV
What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Romans 3:29 KJV
Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
1 Corinthians 12:13 KJV
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
So it does not matter…..Christ died to fulfill the requirements of the law!
You cannot take one part of the word and then leave the other part out!
BACK TO THE LESSON:
Moses or Moshe says “And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse. Let’s stop there to discuss this part here.”
Moses is prophesying that in the future, it shall come to pass, when all these things. What things? ANS: The blessing and the curse. What blessing and what curse?
Let’s read it real quick:
Deuteronomy 28:1–2 KJV
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
Towns and fields blessed.
Children and crops blessed.
Offspring of your heads and flocks blessed.
Fruit baskets and breadboards blessed.
Wherever you go and whatever you do will be blessed.
The Lord will conquer your enemies.
The Lord will guarantee a blessing and your storehouses will be full.
He will establish you as His holy people.
He will prosper you in the land.
Send rain at the proper time.
Lord will make you the head and not the tail, above and not beneath.
What is the stipulation? Verse 1 “to observe and to do all his commandments.” Some of them? “All his commandments” “which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth.
See we preach this don’t we. But here is the thing, you cannot preach this and leave the other stuff out.
Because in the same chapter there are curses, let’s look at that scripture:
Deuteronomy 28:15 KJV
But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
Let’s take inventory of the curses: they are the direct opposite of the blessing:
Towns and fields cursed.
Fruit basket and breadboards cursed.
Children and crops cursed….note….you sin can directly affect your children.
Offspring of your herds and flocks will be cursed.
Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be cursed (nothing will go right for you).
The Lord himself will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in everthing you do. Not the devil, not your enemy, not your spouse, not your children, not the demons, the LORD himself.
Until at last you are completely destroyed for doing evil and abandoning me…..JUDGEMENT OF SIN.
The Lord will afflict you with diseases.
The Lord will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, and with blight and mildew.
The Lord will withold the rain.
The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies.
The Lord will afflict with boils of Egypt, madness, blindness, and panic.
You will be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will come to save you.
You will be engaged to a woman, but another man will sleep with her. And I believe vice-versa, a woman will be engaged to a man and another woman will sleep with him.
You will build a house but someone else will live in it.
You will do stuff for your self but others will benefit from it and you will not receive anything.
Can’t get everything……but lets get a few more.
The Lord will exile you to a land you don’t to worship false gods of wood and stone.
You will plant much but harvest little.
I don’t have time to go over every curse. But I want you to take notice of the fact that there are more curses than they are blessings. Many preachers never even touch the bottom half of Deut 28 because their focus is on the upper part where the blessings are because they want to avoid the bad stuff.
And then people in their congregation are struggling because God has cursed them because they won’t live according to the word of God. Not knowing that if God curses them, they are going to feel the after affects of it.
Deuteronomy 28:45–47 KJV
Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee: And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things;
Let me read this again in the NLT:
Deuteronomy 28:45–47 NLT
“If you refuse to listen to the Lord your God and to obey the commands and decrees he has given you, all these curses will pursue and overtake you until you are destroyed. These horrors will serve as a sign and warning among you and your descendants forever. If you do not serve the Lord your God with joy and enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received,
Worship is more than outward appearance….we will talk about that Sunday. But you need to obey God’s word and then the word says “If you do not serve the LORD your God with joy and enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received.”
SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Deuteronomy 28:48 KJV
Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
