We are currently in a crisis. While there are many things to watch and be concerned about, I’m discussing biblical illiteracy.
Biblical illiteracy is a term used to describe the lack of knowledge of the Bible among Christians. Some say that biblical illiteracy is a problem that affects the church more than secular society. Here are some examples of biblical illiteracy:

Reading the Bible... According to a 2017 Lifeway Research survey, only 20% of Americans have read the entire Bible at least once, and 22% read a section of the Bible every day. A 2022 Lifeway Research survey found that 11% of Americans have read the Bible once, and 30% have only read a few passages.

Identifying Bible figures... According to Barna Research Group, 60% of Americans can name only five of the Ten Commandments, and many Christians can identify only two or three disciples.

Beliefs... According to Executable Outlines, 82% of Americans believe "God helps those who help themselves" is a Bible verse, and 12% of adults believe that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. A survey of graduating high school seniors found that over 50% thought Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife.

Some say that biblical illiteracy can make it difficult for Christians to have healthy relationships with Jesus Christ and the Trinity. Others say that biblical literacy programs should aim to produce transformed readers rather than just informed quotes.
Psalm 119:11 (MEV)
Your word I have hidden in my heart,
that I might not sin against You.
There is a reason the Psalmist recorded this statement. We need His word to live. It is life not just to our body but to our spirit.
Matthew 4:4 (MEV)
But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
This may be why the world and the church are experiencing so much struggle. Walking away from the word of God is a grave mistake, especially for believers.
The answer to this problem is clear. We need to turn back to Him in a personal relationship. This is His desire.
Genesis 1:26–31 (MEV)
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Then God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is on the face of all the earth and every tree which has fruit yielding seed. It shall be food for you. To every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the earth which has the breath of life in it, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
You are the only part of creation made in His image and likeness! Nothing else. It is not by accident.
“At the pinnacle of His creative work, God created humans. According to Genesis 1:27, they were created in God’s image, followed by a parallel phrase, “male and female he created them.” Being created in God’s image means we were designed to know and relate personally to Him. We were created with spiritual natures which permit us to reason, make choices, and to know and love God.” - BEP.
God created you to be in a relationship with Him.
Jeremiah 29:11 (MEV)
For I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
God has known and loved you from the foundations of the earth. He loves you like no other.
John 3:16–17 (MEV)
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
God saved you when nobody else could! Nobody else could have saved us from the judgment that was coming. Again, He wants to be in a relationship with you.
Romans 8:15–17 (MEV)
For you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear. But you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of God, and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified with Him.
Biblical Illiteracy makes no sense among believers. If we know the Word, we know Him. If we know the Word, we know we are like nothing else He created. You are a child of God. He has adopted you into His family.
Our story began with the creation of everything you and I know, with that first man and woman in Eden. Our failure, redemption, and plan began in that garden. You are no accident; you were made for this!
