Welcome to Vertical Church
While we work through some internet issues we are uploading the recorded service a few hours after our service concludes
Acts 2:42 LSB
42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
As a local church we seek to uphold the values of the NT church as seen in Acts 2:42 -
We believe in the sovereignty of God - Jesus is the Lord of lords and the King of Kings, sovereign over all creation
We are Biblical in our theology - we teach the Bible
We are Systematic in our theology - there is a divine unity in the Bible
We believe in the authority of the Bible - Scripture alone
We are Catholic - we believe that the Church is not a building or a denomination but a people - those who are truly in Christ and embrace the truths that were embraced and confessed by the New Testament Church, the apostolic church. When we say catholic we use the term in its original sense meaning “universal”—the whole church.
We are evangelical - we believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
We are a Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed. We live for the glory of God alone.
Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone, For the glory of God alone - join us on Sundays
Call to Worship - Psalm 141
Psalm 141 LSB
A Psalm of David. 1 O Yahweh, I call upon You; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to You! 2 May my prayer be established as incense before You; The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering. 3 Set a guard, O Yahweh, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. 4 Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice deeds in wickedness With men who are workers of iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies. 5 Let the righteous smite me in lovingkindness and reprove me; It is oil upon the head; Let not my head refuse it, For still my prayer is against their evil deeds. 6 Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the cliff, And they hear my words, for they are pleasant. 7 As when one plows and splits open the earth, Our bones have been scattered at the mouth of Sheol. 8 For my eyes are toward You, O Yahweh, O Lord; In You I take refuge; do not pour out my soul to death. 9 Keep me from the jaws of the trap which they have set for me, And from the snares of workers of iniquity. 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, As for myself—meanwhile, I am passing by.
Scripture Reading - Luke 18:9-14
Luke 18:9–14 LSB
9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 “The Pharisee stood and was praying these things to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 “I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other, for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Romans 2:5-11 Living With Eternity in Mind
Introduction:
Why do we preach the gospel?
Why do we share Christ with are friends and family and coworkers?
Every true believer in Christ believes in predestination: pre - before, in advance; destination - the place to which someone or is going
How did you get to church this morning? You had a destination.
It seems to me that some people think that if you believe in predestination you don’t have to share the gospel. But it actually seems to me to say that if you do believe in predestination then you would be passionate about sharing your faith.
Are you living with Eternity in mind?
Like the men in the parable of Luke 18, are you proud that you are not like those “other” people, or are you so humbled by your inability to save yourself that in gratitude you want to share your faith with everyone you are close to and are willing to support those who plant churches all around the world so that they can share the gospel through the preaching of the gospel?
In Romans 2:1-5 we see 4 brutally humbling statements concerning believers and unbelievers
(1) You practice the same sin (2:1)
(2) You’ll suffer the same judgment (2:2)
(3) You resist the same kindness of God (2:4)
(4) You are storing up the same wrath (2:5)
(5) You will be judged by the same principle
Romans 2:5–6 LSB
5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will repay to each according to his works:
Psalm 62:12 LSB
12 And that to You, O Lord, belongs lovingkindness, For You repay a man according to his work.
Proverbs 24:12 LSB
12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts understand? And does not He who guards your soul know? And will not He render to man according to his work?
The sheep and the goats in the Gospel Mt 25:31-46 -
Matthew 25:31 LSB
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.
2 Corinthians 5:10 LSB
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
God renders the judgment - it has always been this way
Paul’s message in Acts 17:30-31
Acts 17:30–31 LSB
30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now commanding men that everyone everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He determined, having furnished proof to all by raising Him from the dead.”
How does Paul want us to respond to this looming judgment?
Romans 2:6–11 LSB
6 who will repay to each according to his works: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. 9 There will be affliction and turmoil for every soul of man who works out evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who works good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.
The two eternities waiting before us:
(5.1) The eternity of the believer affirmed
Romans 2:7 LSB
7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
(5.2) The fate of the unbeliever promised
Romans 2:8–9 LSB
8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. 9 There will be affliction and turmoil for every soul of man who works out evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek,
Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned against the absolute reality of hell.
(5.3) The promise reaffirmed
Romans 2:10 LSB
10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who works good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
(5.4) The immutability and justice of God exalted
Romans 2:11 LSB
11 For there is no partiality with God.
Revelation 20:11–12 LSB
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sits upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 Then I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
This is the glory of the gospel, the power of God for salvation, to the Jew first and to the gentiles, all the peoples of the earth.
The salvation of Jesus, the giving of a righteousness that we could never possess, is the gospel that saves us from the wrath of God
Let’s pray
The Shepherd who has laid down His life for the sheep, who calls you by name, who never abandons His flock or allows His sheep to perish, preserve you in all the attacks of the enemy, hold you steady in all your sorrows, and keep you faithful in all your temptations. Amen.
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 LSB
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was being betrayed took bread, 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.
