1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
What a wonderful text. Praise the Lord for His Word. Faith comes by hearing the Word… Jesus said whoever has ears to hear, let them hear it…
Say a prayer like this: Holy Spirit, give me ears to hear your word. I open my heart to you now. Speak for your servant is listening.
Amen!
I want to talk to you about -
The Lesson of Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet
The Lesson of Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet
What does the Bible have to say about Jesus washing his disciples' feet and how does this apply to us today and at this time?
Foot washing was a common practice in Jesus' time.
It was not a religious service, but a very common practice.
There were public bathhouses. When walking down the street, if your feet were dirty and dusty, you could go into one of these houses and a slave, a servant, would wash your feet.
If you were rich, in your house, there was probably a basin of water at the door, and if you were receiving guests in your house, the first thing they would do was take off their sandals when entering the house.
And a servant would be there with a towel and a basin. And the guest would place their feet in the basin.
There would be a stool there. And the servant would wash his feet and dry them with a towel.
Now, the reason they did this, frankly, was for practical reasons, is that they didn't have paved streets and sidewalks like we do.
They didn't have asphalt streets. Everything was dusty and dirty, muddy and most people wore sandals.
They didn't have closed shoes, like we do, to keep out dust and dirt.
So foot washing was a practical thing, but it was also a mark of hospitality.
The passage before us today, in John 13 has to do with service and serving the Lord.
If you have been saved and are going to live in heaven, you have been saved to serve the Lord, (Ephesians 2:10 “10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
You are saved by grace, thru faith to serve the Lord by serving your neighbor
You serve the Lord by serving other//
What this now
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
You serve the Lord by serving other.
Today's passage talks about serving
So let's examine the context of this passage of Scripture to understand clearly what Jesus is teaching.
John 13:1 (NIV)
1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
Observe something, verse 1 tells us that Jesus is leaving and He knows He is leaving.
Now you imagine a beloved teacher, like Jesus was, receiving a farewell dinner party.
You probably imagine a farewell dinner with a lot of pomp, that maybe the disciples would be having a banquet in His honor, and the master of ceremonies would be up there on a pulpit saying great things about Him, because now He's leaving.
But notice that this is not what is happening.
Note: "Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end."
Notice one detail,
Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world
Jesus knew that in just a few hours he would be leaving this world, not like Elijah who left this world in a chariot of fire!
Or like Enoch…
He would leave this world through the hell path called Calvary!
and He knew it.
He knows that the time has come to be crucified for the sins of the world!
He is under great pressure, his heart is in agony, so much so that he goes to a garden to pray and sweat, so to speak, drops of blood.
But what is he doing? He is washing the disciples' feet, loving them and teaching them until the end.
You know, have you ever served the Lord under pressure?
Have you ever made excuses for some exaggerated attitude because you were under pressure?
(when you got angry with someone, when you were too hard on someone and then said: "I'm sorry, but I was under a lot of pressure" - has this ever happened to you?
Jesus is under a lot of pressure, but he is loving and teaching.
Note: being under pressure is never an excuse for you to sin against your brother.
Let's together learn the lesson He is about to give the disciples in John 13, verse 7. Take a look:
John 13:7 (NIV)
7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
Verse 7 gives us a clue that there is a big lesson here.
Jesus is saying, "What I'm doing goes beyond washing your dirty feet," because what Jesus did was this:
He took a towel and a basin, stood at the door, and when the disciples came in, Jesus, the Lord of glory washed their feet.
He who calmed the storm,
He who healed the blind, the lame and resurrected Lazarus!
The creator of the heavens and the earth is doing the work of a simple slave.
He is washing his disciples' dirty feet.
Then he said:
“You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
Now, is the time for you to understand.
There are some great lessons here for us to learn today, and I pray to God that the man who speaks to you today will practice what he preaches and learn what he says.
But I also pray to God that we can all learn.
We have several lessons about serving, but the first lesson is about salvation.
I. Salvation is essential
Salvation is essential
Salvation is essential
Now, Jesus talks about salvation, and we will see that. In verse 8ff
Now, what's the lesson?
What does this teach us?
Let's try to picture this together.
Suppose we came here today, and we didn't have a car, and we walked to this house of worship on foot.
Suppose there was nothing paved, nothing out there but dirt. And let's assume we were all wearing sandals, or maybe some of us came barefoot. And suppose before we come to church today we have showered and we are all clean, with perfume, soap and deodorant, and we are as clean as possible, but we are going to church on bare foot on unpaved streets. Our feet will be dirty when we get here, so our feet need to be washed.
And suppose we came here, ready to wash our feet, and someone said, "No, we're not just going to wash your feet. You need to take a full bath."
Well, you wouldn't need a full shower. You've already taken a shower. What you need is for your feet to be washed.
Now, what is the lesson here?
Jesus is not talking about physical dirt.
Jesus is referring to spiritual dirt when he talks about being clean, and this is very clear.
He is talking about spiritual filth.
When we are saved, we are spiritually washed, that is, our soul is washed. Spiritually, we are washed.
I'm going to give you some verses that talk about being washed.
For example, in Ephesians 5, verses 25 and 26, the Bible speaks of "cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,” "
In Titus, chapter 3 and verse 5, the Bible speaks of
Titus 3:5 “5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,”
And, again in the book of Revelation, chapter 1 and verse 5, the Bible speaks of the Lord,
"who washed us from our sins."
In other words, the precious blood of Jesus Christ washes and purifies us.
Can I ask you this question?
Have you ever been washed by the blood of the Lamb?
Do you know what the problem is with many people within the church?
They were starched and ironed, but never washed, and never truly saved.
Now, what did Jesus say here?
Look at this, in verse 10:
John 13:10 “10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. ”
that is, he doesn't need to take another shower, just wash his feet -
because” his whole body is clean. ..." -
when he cleans his feet, he will be all clean.
Because He already took a shower.
And then notice what He says – “You are clean, though not everyone of you”
11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
It is obvious that the Lord is not talking about physical contamination here.
He's talking about spiritual filth, of sin, and what He's saying to Simon Peter:
"Peter, you're saved. You've already had a bath. I gave you the washing of regeneration, but your feet are dirty.
Therefore, your feet need to be washed. You are saved, but you walk in a dirty world, and therefore your feet are dirty and need to be washed.”
Now, when Jesus said, "You are clean, but not all of you," He was talking about Judas.
Judas was never washed, never saved.
Every now and then we talk about the eternal security of the believer, and some people ask: Did Judas lose his salvation? Judas did not lose his salvation, he never had salvation.
He was never saved.
Look at verse 18
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
Jesus said, "You are clean, but not all of you. There is someone who will betray me.
The Scriptures prophesied that one would come and lift up his heel against me."
Look at chapter 6 of John and let's clarify something. People say:
"Did Jesus make a mistake in calling Judas?
Was Jesus taken by surprise?
Was Jesus just a bad judge of character?
Did something go wrong?"
No, not at all.
See, please, in John chapter 6, verse 64 - Jesus said:
64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
Jesus knew from the beginning who those who did not believe were and who would betray him."
Jesus was not at all surprised when Judas betrayed Him.
He knew that the Scriptures had prophesied this, and it was very clear.
Look again at verses 70 and 71:
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
What I mean, ladies and gentlemen, is that when Jesus said, "Simon, you are clean, but not everyone in this room is clean," because He knew that Judas had never taken a spiritual bath.
Judas had never been saved.
Judas served three and a half years alongside Jesus Christ without being saved.
Now, if you had given Judas a questionnaire and asked, "Judas, are you saved?" he might have said, "I am a member of the church."
"I didn't ask you that.
Judas, are you saved?" "I'm a charter member."
"I didn't ask you that.
Judas, are you saved?" "I am a disciple."
"I didn't ask you that.
Judas, are you saved?" "I'm the treasurer."
"I didn't ask you that.
Judas, are you saved?"
You know, that's kind of scary when you think about it.
There are many people who will go to hell full of baptism certificates, Sunday school attendance certificates and church offering receipts, but who were never saved.
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many wonders?" And Jesus said, "Then will I say unto them, Depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
Friend, There is a very important lesson here regarding salvation.
You need to take a shower Before you start serving the Lord.
Now this brings up the question: are you saved?
Now, no one would have pointed to Judas as lost.
When Jesus said, "One of you will betray me," do you think everyone else said, "It must be Judas"? No.
They said, "Is it me, Lord?"
They didn't say, "It must be Judas."
Judas was probably the most respected of the group.
Question: If you have an organization, who do you appoint treasurer?
The one you trust and respect most.
They elected Judas as treasurer of the group.
No one said, "the traitor must be Judas."
Judas, on the outside, looked very good.
His resume was great.
He was a man who outwardly demonstrated great success, but had never been saved.
Now listen to me. The Bible says, "Examine yourselves whether you are in the faith."
Have you ever been washed with the regeneration wash?
You know, the devil would rather keep lost and helpless people in the pew than in the gutter.//
There are many lost church members. (20%-30%)
The church, instead of being a force for evangelism, has become a field for evangelism.
And some precious people in this church, in this building, have their names on the membership rolls, but I sincerely, honestly believe that there are some people who need to be saved.
If they died today - there would be a honorable funeral here... there would be people praising the work done, etc. but his/her soul would be in hell. Because they were never washed, they were never saved.
"Beloved, the Bible says I should examine myself whether I am in the faith.
What are the signs to know whether or not I am in faith?"
Well, let me give you four exams; and I'm not going to dwell here and preach another sermon,
but I need to mention four things.
Do you want to know if you are saved or not?
Four tests:
The first test: The test of Love
1. Do you have love in your heart for Jesus Christ?
1. Do you have love in your heart for Jesus Christ?
I'm not asking whether you adhere to any doctrine about Jesus Christ.
You say, "Well, I know the plan of salvation."
You are not saved by the plan; you are saved by the Man of salvation.
Do you have love in your heart for Jesus Christ?
Do you think about Jesus when you are outside the church premises?
Have you ever found yourself walking around and saying, "Jesus, I love you. Don't walk away from me, Jesus."
Jesus keep me in Your presence.
This may seem corny, but I believe it demonstrates love for Jesus Christ. Isn't that what we do when we love someone?
I believe the mark of a true disciple is that he loves the Lord Jesus Christ.
And, if he loves the Lord Jesus Christ, he will love his Word, obey his commandments.
I will tell you another test to see if you are in the faith.
The Hatred Test
Not only the test of love, but we need to take the test of hate.
2. Do you hate sin?
2. Do you hate sin?
Do you hate sin?
1 John 5:3 (NIV)
3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
Has there ever come a time in your life when you said, "I'm tired of living this way"?
It's not just having Jesus as a fire insurance policy.
Do You have a desire in your heart to be holy?
Do you hate sin?
People who reject the security of salvation: "If I believed in eternal security, I would be saved and then sin as much as I wanted.
"this is love for God: to keep his commands.
.
Yes, I fail, but I tell you that there is a difference between before being saved and after being saved.
Before I was saved, I was running into sin; after being saved, I am running away from sin.
I don't want to sin.
I would rather eat dirt than sin of my own free will.
Are you saved?
Do you love Jesus?
Do you hate sin?
I'll tell you one thing, if your sin doesn't bother you, it's probably because you haven't yet been washed by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Third test,
1. the love test
2. the hate test
3. the wish test
3. Do you want to see the lost saved?
3. Do you want to see the lost saved?
Do you carry a burden for lost souls?
You will never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never convince me that you are saved, washed, filled with the Holy Spirit, and don't want others to know Jesus.
This is ridiculous. How can you claim to be a child of God and believe in the gospel, believe that there is one heaven, one hell, one death, and one judgment to face, and not worry about the lost?
If you don't have a passion in your heart to see people come to Jesus Christ,
You need to put a big question mark on this thing you call salvation.
Because if you love Jesus, you will love what Jesus loves, and Jesus loves the lost.
Fourth test:
Test of the testimony of the Holy Spirit
4. Do you have the testimony of the Spirit in your heart?
4. Do you have the testimony of the Spirit in your heart?
"He that believeth in the Son," says the Bible, "has the testimony in himself."
16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
The Spirit of God bears witness in our spirit that we are children of God.
Now, what is the testimony of the Spirit?
The testimony of the Spirit is not an emotional feeling, it goes beyond emotion.
There is nothing wrong with emotion; God gave us emotion.
Emotion is a gift from God.
And if you have an emotional love for Jesus Christ, I'm happy. Amen!
But the love I am speaking of, and the witness of the Spirit, is deeper than that.
What is the testimony of the Spirit?
It is the awareness that you belong to God.
It's not a feeling - it's a consciousness.
And if you have it, you know what I'm talking about.
The Spirit of God bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
Again, I remind you, beloved, of 2 Corinthians, chapter 3, verse 5 - the Bible says, "Examine yourselves whether you are in the faith."
Four examination:
The love test
The Hatred Test
The Test of Desire - Desire to See or Lost Saved
The test of E.S. testimony
Listen, there were twelve people in that room with Jesus, and one of them was fake.
One of them was lost, but was active.
He was religious.
She was serving.
He went out with others to preach
On the outside, he looked clean, but inside he was filthy and lost.
And, today you may be sitting in this church with a Bible in your hand, but you have never been washed!
When Jesus said, "You are clean, but not all of you,"
He is teaching us that salvation is a personal experience, and it is essential.
It is absolutely necessary.
Conclusão:
Make sure you’ve had a bath.
Let’s bow our heads in prayer.
Heads are bowed and eyes are closed. And would you pray, “Lord Jesus, wash my feet.” If your heart has become contaminated, let the Lord cleanse it.
Really, it’s your heart, not your feet. Your feet are only an illustration of the heart. “If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Friend, I’ve got happy news for you. There is not one reason in the world that anyone in this building cannot be crystal clear and pure as the driven snow. “The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses from all sin.” Thank God. Hallelujah. Why carry the baggage of sin around? Be clean and be delivered by the grace of God.
Now, some need to examine themselves today.
You are baptized you’re a member of this church or some other Bible believing, bible teaching church, you are religious but I am not saying you are a hypocrite; you are missing salvation. O batismo com o fogo do Espirito Santo.
Is there genuine love in your heart for the Lord Jesus?
Is there a genuine hatred for sin?
Are you concerned about lost souls?
Does God’s Spirit bear witness with your spirit that you’re a child of God?
If not, perhaps you need to come to Jesus today and say, “I want to get it settled. I want to know that I know that I’m saved.”
Judas kissed Jesus. He kissed the door to heaven, and went to hell. You can be so close, and yet so far away.
Would you pray a prayer like this, if you’re not certain that you’re saved: Lord Jesus, I don’t want mere religion; I want a spiritual bath.
I want to be clean, and only You, by Your grace, can cleanse me.
Lord Jesus, You died to pay for my sin.
Lord Jesus, You shed your blood for me.
Today, right now, I receive You into my life, by faith, as my Lord and Savior. Forgive me.
Cleanse me. Wash me. Save me, Jesus. Save me.
Ask Him to do it. Believe He will. Don’t look for a sign, or ask for a feeling; just stand on His Word.
Ask Him sincerely! If you have done it, Then thank Him. Say, “Thank You for doing it.”
Just say, “I lay claim to it by faith, for You said I’m justified by faith.
I put my faith in You, Jesus, once and for all, now and forever.
Thank You for saving me. And, Lord Jesus, not only do I receive You, but I yield my life back to You.
Begin now to make me the person You want me to be. And help me, Jesus, never, ever to be ashamed of You.
In Your name I pray, dear Savior. Amen.”
