IF YOU ARE WHY AND WHERE?
WHY DO WE RUN?
Proverbs 28:1 (ESV)
1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.
GOOD RUNNING....NOT ALWAYS GOOD
COLLEGE....RISKY BUSINESS
TODAY WE’LL SEE 3 CHARACTERS THAT ARE RUNNING, ALL FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. THE ONLY NOT RUNNING IS JESUS. LAST WEEK WE ENDED WITH HIM WAKING DISCIPLES AND WALKING STRAIGHT INTO THE FIGHT. STEADFAST. BOLD.
42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

BRING US BACK TO WHERE WE ARE IN MARK
LAST WEEK DISCIPLES SLEEPING!!
Mark 14:43–52 (ESV)
43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”
45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left him and fled. 51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
“The Greek word for ‘detachment of soldiers’ (speira) has been traditionally rendered ‘cohort,’ from the Latin cohors, which denotes a tenth of a legion, or about six hundred men.”[1] Is it really historically plausible that the Pharisees would have hired a 600-soldier battalion to arrest just one man?
SANHEDRIN: assembly or council…Jewish religious ruling council made up of pharisees, sadducies, and scribes
THE FIRST GROUP WE SEE RUNNING....PHYSICALLY WALKING TO HIM, BUT SPIRITUALY THEY ARE RUNNING FROM THE TRUTH!!
SOMETIMES........
WE RUN FROM THE TRUTH
VERSES PICK AND CHOOSE
NONBELIEVERS.....DON’T WANNA CHANGE.
THESE RELIGIOUS LEADERS DIDN’T WANT TO LOSE THEIR POWER, THEIR CONTROL.....SO THEY ARE RUNNING FROM THE TRUTH THAT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO THEM OVER AND OVER.
MAYBE HERE, OR WATCHING......HERE’S YOUR SIGN
MAYBE FOLLOWING A LONG TIME.....BUT THERE’S A TRUTH, CONVICTION GOD HAS REVEALED TO YOU
GOD IS THE GREAT SURGEON....HE’S NOT WANTING TO CUT THAT OUT OF YOUR LIFE TO HURT YOU, BUT TO SAVE YOU
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
set plan up with Judas: sign was a kiss
43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.
JUDAS IS RUNNING....FROM THOSE CLOSEST TO HIM, FROM THE ONLY ONLY WHO CAN SAVE HIM, AND FOR THE WORLD THAT WILL BETRAY HIM!!!
AND SOMETIMES.......LIKE JUDAS....
WE RUN FOR THE WORLD.
JUDAS SAW THE PLAN GOING DIFFERENTLY......SEEKS POWER, MONEY
30 PIECES OF SILVER.....STANDARD PAY FOR A SLAVE....3 OR 4 MONTHS WORTH OF WAGES
JESUS NO LONGER HIS MASTER BUT HIS SLAVE
IS THERE SOMETHING WE ARE COMPRISING ON BECAUSE IT’S COMFORTABLE.....SOMETHING THAT THE WORLD IS ENTICING US WITH THAT WE ARE PURSUING, THAT GOD NEVER SAID GO AFTER.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Mark 14:46–52 (ESV)
46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”
50 And they all left him and fled. 51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
REMEMBER AT LAST SUPPER JESUS HAD TOLD THEM THEY WOULD ALL FALL AWAY, BACK IN VERSE 27
27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
quoting zechariah 13:7
WE RUN WHEN WE’RE AFRAID!
Luke 15:17–24 (ESV)
17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.” ’
20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
