Broken Heart

“No one ever worshipped God with his whole heart unless he worshipped him with a broken heart; and there never was a heart that was truly broken thatbrokenness did not thereby become a whole heart.”
Charles Spurgeon
By contrast, the focus here is not on the potential convert’s humility, brokenness or faith, but on the need for transformation, for new life from another realm, for the intervention of the Spirit of God.
3   Brokenness is not a feeling or an emotion. Rather, it requires a choice, an act of the will.

Our enemies cannot hurt us, unless we hurt ourselves. No man’s character was ever really injured except by himself.
The World Turned Upside Down, Volume 4, Sermon #193 - Acts 17:6
Charles Spurgeon
62    Why is God so extremely severe in dealing with sin? Simply because sin is a broken law, a broken relationship, a broken fellowship, and it produces a broken life.

God can do wonders with a broken heart;
if we give him all of the pieces.

Understanding the deep truths of God’s Word does not give a man a big head; it gives him a broken and contrite heart.

True prayer is born out of brokenness.
Frances J. Roberts
4   Brokenness is the shattering of my self-will—the absolute surrender of my will to the will of God. It is saying “Yes, Lord!”—no resistance, no chaffing, no stubbornness—simply submitting myself to His direction and will in my life.

God did not create you to suffer … or to live a life of misery, pain, or sorrow. The brokenness of our world is reflected in the brokenness of our hearts and our lives.
June Hunt
He will bring the external brokenness of the world into a relationship with the internal brokenness of your life in just such a way that it teaches you, wakes you up, strengthens you, heals you.
Timothy Keller

2   What is true brokenness? Someone has said that brokenness, like a fragrance, is easier to detect than to define.

1716Learn this lesson—not to trust Christ because you repent, but trust Christ to make you repent; not to come to Christ because you have a broken heart, but to come to him that he may give you a broken heart; not to come to him because you are fit to come, but to come to him because you are unfit to come. Your fitness is your unfitness. Your qualification is your lack of qualification.—47.427

1742If you cannot come with a broken heart, come for a broken heart. If you cannot come with faith, come for faith. If you cannot come repenting, come and ask the Lord to give you repentance. Come empty-handed, bankrupt, ruined, condemned, and you will find rest.—28.654
Charles Spurgeon
