The Woman Healed

A New Setting

Jesus has finished His sermon to the people with the warning of Repent or perish

we saw that to perish ultimately means to go to Hell

and unless someone repents and turn to the cross of Jesus

they will go to Hell

to everlasting destruction

unless someone turns their life over to Jesus to save them

they will go to the lake of fire

unless someone puts their trust in Jesus to save them

they will be

Mark 9:48 LSB

where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

So Jesus now is teaching in a synagogue

we don’t know what He is teaching on

but there is a woman in the congregation

her life will be changed by Jesus before She goes home that day

read 10-17

A Woman Bent Over

V 10-11

On the Sabbath, a day very holy to these people

a day full of man made rules

a day that man made burdens are put onto people

there is a woman coming to the worship that her view of the world is her feet and the dust she walks in

this sickness was caused by Satan

it does not say that she was demon possessed

but that an evil spirit caused the deformity of her body

Just like in Job

Job 2:7 LSB

Then Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh and struck Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

why did satan cause this woman to be like this?

satan is evil and does not nor never liked humans

God made them in His image

V 16 tells us again that this illness is a product of satan

this illness that she has is a spiritual issue that only Jesus can cure

Jesus called her over

there is a short wall between where the men sit or stand

and where the women stand

so Jesus calls her to the center where He is

What if?

she is afraid of the men and does not come

she does not want to attract attention to herself

she does not know what will happen and is afraid

does she know that Jesus can heal her?

does she know that this is a spiritual problem and only Jesus can heal her

BUT what we have is the account and she came into the presence of Jesus and was healed instantly

V13

there was a dramatic change in her life

her spine is completely healed

she can run and jump, play basketball

and praising God for the miracle He has provided

But

V 14

this man was outraged at what Jesus had done

he did not care about this poor spiritually crippled woman

all he cared about is keeping the rules

all he cared about is making sure that others kept his rules

V 15

you pretender

you pretend to belong to the kingdom of God but you have no love or compassion

you have more love for your animals that this woman

you have more love for your religion than for people

V 16

you care for your animals on the Sabbath what about this woman?

is your religion so strict that satan cant be defeated on this day

in John 8 Jesus calls these men sons of satan

John 8:44 LSB

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

So the answer is no he does not want satan defeated at anytime

especially on the Sabbath

V 17

these people have been taught from a child about the law

about the sabbath

all of them are born spiritually dead in trespasses and sins

but they have been through the old Testament rituals

they have been indoctrinated to believe that if they keep the law then they will be in good standing with God

just prior to the verse we see on the screen we have the dialogue of Jesus and these men

John 8:39–42 LSB

They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, you would do the deeds of Abraham. “But now you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. This Abraham did not do. “You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; we have one Father: God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come of Myself, but He sent Me.

lets put this into today’s terms of someone who thinks they are a christian,

belonging to the family of God

on their way to heaven

I grew up in a home that took me to church

I go to church now

I have been baptized as a child

all people are going to heaven Right?

we have the same issues that these ancient Israelites have

thinking that they are ok with God

this woman has a spiritual issue that only Jesus can heal

an evil spirit has caused her illness

Adam sinned and his sin was passed down to all

we are born sinners and because of that we fall short of the glory of God

Romans 5:18 LSB

So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.

when we are unsaved we have a spiritual problem that only Jesus death on the cross can fix

this woman was bent over for 18 years with no hope

Jesus called her unto himself

told her she was healed touched her and healed her of her spiritual sickness

the man on the other hand was indignant

not wanting to repent of his sin

not wanting to turn to Jesus for healing

not thinking that he was even sick

not knowing that he was already dead in trespasses and sins

Jesus called this woman

Is Jesus calling you ?

do you need the touch of Jesus?

do you realize your need to be saved from your sin ?

do you have a conviction from the Holy Spirit

about your sin

about eternity

about your need Jesus to save you?

It’s time for you to give your life to Jesus

to repent and put your faith in Jesus
