There is an old saying: "There are none so bind as those who will not see". That is, understanding cannot be forced on someone who chooses to be ignorant.
But it is not merely ignorance, but a wilfulful ignorance. The Bible calls this arrogance - pride - and in the context of John 9, a spiritual blindness.
