Introduction
Open to Psalm 2 this morning. Psalm 2, shortly we will read verse 1 - 12 and then pick up verse 5.
Last time, Laughter from on high at the derision of the people.
They in their very wickedness rage against God, yet in their raging they can only accomplish his will.
Best seen in Jesus and his laying down his own life using wickedness their for his good end.
We meditated, on how the derision the Lord brings on the wicked help us love his discipline.
Don’t be a fool, be quite and listen, learn from the Word before speaking or in order to keep you from derision the Lord will discipline those he love.
We will get into this more today, a proper understanding of Gods work in creation.
Jesus is always the actor on God’s will.
“Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.” (Re 3:19, ESV)
Jesus is the one that spoke, as the word of God, all creation into existence,
Jesus is the one that sits in the heavens and holds them in derision.
Think about it, Jesus said no one takes my life from me, I lay it down and I take it up again.
Their raging against him accomplished his will, that is the definition of derision.
That context is important as we get into verses 5-6.
Please Stand for the Reading of God’s Word
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
May God Bless the Reading of His Holy, Infallible, and Sufficient Word
Let’s Pray

The sermons title is The Lord is King (Pt 2).
Its part two because that Laughter, and that derision from from the one seated in the heaven is from the King. God is not saying, one day Christ will be king. but God said, I have set my King.
“Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb 8:1, ESV)
Before we get to what was said, It important to think through the purpose in God’s words look at verse 5.
Body
Body
The Terror of the Wrath of the King
The Terror of the Wrath of the King
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,
I think its human nature to run to the the words in verse 6. We are often more concerned about what was said then why they were said.
I think we see this in the current mass addiction short videos in our culture.
As long as its entertaining we often are not thinking about the worldview, or reasons of the person or organization that posted the video.
“Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury”
The words are intended to terrify and reveal wrath.
The next words about how his King rules, are intended to terrify the wicked.
How many times have to seen and chucked at blasphemy?
I am thinking about a peanut comic I saw once.
Its blasphemy, any you see it everywhere.
The Jesus portrayed on TV shows like the The Chosen is not the King who terrify wicked.
That’s not Jesus, its a blasphemes misrepresentation, there is not a single TV Jesus that has ever been made that is not a violation of God’s commandments and misrepresentation of Jesus.
Though some misrepresentation are worse then others.
Understand believer if you are watching the Jesus on TV you are mal-forming your mind.
Get Your Jesus from the Scriptures and NO WHERE ELSE!
Every time you watch or look at the Jesus on a TV screen, you are mis-training your mind as to who Jesus is.
I would go as far as ask saying there are very very very few Christians in the US who do not have something wrong in their thinking about Jesus because of the incorrect and false version of Jesus that have been portrayed on TV for years and years.
Jesus is not sitting up in heaven, going, please choose me.
He is a king that is angry with the wicked every day, he holds them in derision every day, and he did so even while he was here to lay-down his life for his sheep, their wickedness in the end is only permitted because it is His means to His good ends.
Do you understand the miracle, the conditioned on his part, the love for his own on his part that cased him to come, cause him to say.
“I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:29b–30, ESV)
The only reason brothers and sisters, that this statement is true for you and for me is that the wrath and the terror due our wicked actions was pored out on Him on Calvary.
We are saved
By God’s grace
From God’s Wrath (Jesus’ Wrath)
For God’s Glory
What is He wrathful about?
Their wicked raging, and premeditated rebellion,
Not only do they plot in vain, and be held in derision, but they stir up the Wrath of the almighty,
They say only God can judge me.
That is your respond to accusation of sin.
Do you know the fear of the Lord, does the idea of offending a Holy God scare you?
John Calvin said it like this “Moreover, he ascribes speech to God, not for the purpose of instructing his enemies, but only to convict them of their madness; indeed, by the term speak, he means nothing else than a manifestation of God’s wrath, which the ungodly do not perceive until they feel it.” [1]
The terror that the wrath of the Lord should bring often wont be felt in this life.
This is true for believers and non-believers.
I have said it many times, we are life fish is water when it comes to sin, the fish does not know who wet it is, the sinner does not know how grievous sin is.
To grow in sanctification is the grow in hatred for sin, to come to a great understanding of the heinousness of Sin and since all of of will continue in sanctification in this life time, none of us in this life time will come to a complete understanding of how great our sin is, and great a price was paid on our behalf.
The difference between us and the wicked is that we have be given, for my friends we did not come to this knowledge on our own, we were given, a little gimps of our wickedness and the terror that is the wrath of God and we have been instructed by the Spirit to feel to Christ.
while the wicked have had no such revelation, no such regeneration.
Think about David’s life
(as we motioned, we rightly apply the title Lord Anointed to David. David is the micro in which we see the ultimate fulfilment),
Saul, and his other enemies
Calvin again nails it, “The enemies of David thought it would be the easiest thing in the world for them to destroy one who, coming from a mean shepherd’s cot, had, in their view, presumptuously assumed the sovereign power.’ [1]
Remember what the John said the Jews said about Jesus “So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” (Jn 6:41–42, ESV)
Saul said, is this not the little shepherd boy
They said is this not the carpenters son?
But they knew, Saul confessed when David spared his life that he knew God had made him King.
The knew Jesus was anointed as all of Jerusalem shouted “Hosanna to the son of David”
They new and they trembled not, we know and only in part, and it is enough to melt our hearts, to cut us to the core and send us flying to Christ for mercy.
What was Saul afraid of?
Not of the Lord,
Rebellion in the mater of the Amortizes,
Rebellion and the attempted murder of David
Rebellion in the murder, using Doeg the Edomite, of the entire priestly family of Ahimilech the high priest.
Rebellion in necromancy and use of Mediums.
What terrified Saul?
That God would setup His King.
What did Saul do? Take council against the Lord and against his anointed.
Saul was terrified as losing his power
That’s the exact same thing that Jews of Jesus’ day were afraid of.
Jesus said, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Mt 10:37–39, ESV)
In order to follow Jesus you must get off your thrown and knee before his thrown.
What a contrast we have for ourselves here
The fear of the Lord, the wisdom in the word of the Lord guiding the righteous in Christ.
The fear of the Lord, that the wicked kick against and will perish to.

What terrifies the wicked? The kingship of Jesus.
We already have seen it in a microcosm when thinking about David and Saul.
What terrified Saul, losing the through he thought was his to keep.
What terrifies the world and the powers of evil, the fact that they are and will be kicked off their pretend thrones by the one true King.
That is the intent behind God’s words in verse 6. Lets read verse 5 and 6 together.
The Thrown of Zion
The Thrown of Zion
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
The Kingship of Christ is a terror to the wicked, but a comfort to those being saved.
There are some concepts here we need to understand,
Who is the King Setter and what is a King?
Concepts foreign to us here in the US and really every where now a days.
Where is Zion?
Earthly Zion, David’s City.
“7 Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.” (2 Sa 5:7, ESV)
Heavenly Zion
“21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.” (Ga 4:21–26, ESV)
“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.” (Heb 12:22–24, ESV)
"13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” (Ge 22:13–14, ESV)
Why is it Holy?
I believe is entirely appropriate to call Isreal the holy Land.
The Lord walked there.
Notice i didn't say because Abraham.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Next time we can puck up in verse 7-8,
Remember my brothers and sisters, get your Jesus from the scripture, every other version of Jesus is plagued with error and blasphemy
Live thankfully, this week, God has freed you from vain derision that ends in wrath and made you co hairs with Christ.
This is his work, for His Glory.
Benediction
