God’s promise in Haran: The promise of Abraham (Lesson 26) 9/10/24
Introduction:
Introduction:
* God’s promise to Abraham ( Note down Gen12:1-3) would be for not only the Jews but for all the world
* This promise started to be fulfilled right after it was made.
* This promise was renewed with David (turn to 2Sam7:10-17 to keep in context)
* This promise found its fulfillment in Christ Jesus (turn to Gal3:16)
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
Aim
Aim
Aim: To understand the two-fold nature of God’s promise to Abraham (note down Gen12:1-7 and Gen22:15-18)
* To discern the promise and to identify the time of the fulfillment.
Outline:
Outline:
The two parts of the promise
* First part, the land promise (turn to Gen12:1-3, 7)
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
then
7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
* Abraham would become a great nation
* The nation would inherit the land of Canaan
* Abraham would receive the providential care of God
* Second part, the seed promise (ref: Gen12:3, turn to Gen22:18)
18 “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
* It is in Abraham’s seed “all nations would be blessed.”
* It is in this part of the promise we find the principle we are looking at today, lots of scriptures to note down and look up on your own.
The principle part of the promise and its pre-eminence.
* A “seed” is promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (turn to Gen13:14-18)
14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. 16 “I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. 17 “Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.
* Note down Gen15:1ff, but turn to Gen15:17-18)
17 It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:
* The promise was a covenant with Abrahams descendants (ref: Gen17:6-7, 15-16)
* The seed needed to carry on through Jacob, and we see the promise of his wife (ref: Gen24:1-4, 28:1-4, 35:11-12)
* And protected through Joseph (Turn to Gen48:1-4)
1 Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’
* This seed would become a great nation
* Note down (Gen18:18, 35:11, and 46:3)
* This seed would involve a company of nations
* Turn to (Gen28:3) note down Gen35:11, 48:4)
3 “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.
* This seed would include kings
* Note down (Gen17:6, 16, turn to Gen35:11)
11 God also said to him, “I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come forth from you.
* This seed promise (through Isaac and Jacob) would inherit the land of Canaan.
* This land
* These countries
* The seed would come to be a blessing to all nations (ref: Gen22:18, turn to Gal3:8, 3:16)
8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.”
then Gal3:16 - as a reminder “Seed” not seeds
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
* The emphasis in all of these scriptures, in context is upon the principle aspect of the promise: that all mankind shall be blessed in Abraham and his seed.
* First account, to Abraham (ref: Gen12:1-3)
* Second account, to Abraham again (Gen18:8)
* Yep, another account to Abraham (Gen22:17-18)
* Now to Isaac (turn to Gen26:3-4)
3 “Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. 4 “I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
* Then to Jacob (turn to Gen28:13-14)
13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. 14 “Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
* The promise (covenant) is confirmed (ratified) sealed by two things
* First, seal “passing between the pieces” (ref/Summarize Gen15:1-18, note down Jer34:18)
* Abraham with no seed was to be father to many? How, only through God. His faith in God reckoned him as righteousness.
* Seal this covenant by heifer, female goat, ram, turtledove and pigeon.
* Your descendents will be guests in the land, pilgrims, but then will inherit the land in the forth generation.
* The second seal, it was circumcision (turn to Gen17:2-4, 7-8, 19)
