DECLARATION:
Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.
We are reaching out to our family, friends, and neighbors as the body of Christ.

INTRODUCTION:
Review:
Wk 1. - Who is the Holy Spirit?…God who reveals…”he”
Wk 2. - How does the OT reveal the H.S.?…A New Era Coming…Anticipation!
WHY?…
TODAY: What is the connection between the Holy Spirit and the earthly Ministry of the Messiah?
Opening Scripture:

The Holy Spirit Anoints Leaders

Prophet Samuel anoints Saul King…1 Samuel 10:1 “1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.”
Samuel functions as a priest but his genealogy shows him not descended from Aaron (1 Sam 1:1; 1 Chr. 6), although his adoption into Eli’s family could have given him certain rights.
Old Testament (10:1-27: The Anointing and Selection of Saul as King)
In Egypt the pharaoh was not anointed, but he anointed his officials and his vassals. His anointing of them established their subordinate relationship to him and indicated his protection of them. This model would fit the idea of Saul being anointed as a vassal to God.
1 Samuel 10:6 “6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.”
Prophet Samuel anoints David King…1 Samuel 16:13 “13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.”
People anoint David King…2 Samuel 2:4 “4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,””
Solomon anointed by the priest1 Kings 1:39 “39 There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!””
Solomon’s Dedication of the Temple…1 Kings 8:10–11 “10 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.
Solomon is “Anointed One”…2 Chronicles 6:42 “42 O Lord God, do not turn away the face of your anointed one! Remember your steadfast love for David your servant.””
Anointing Oil…
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (Anoint, Anointed)
From ancient times the priests and kings were ceremonially anointed as a sign of official appointment to office, and as a symbol of God’s power upon them.

The Holy Spirit and The Promised Messiah

the term *“messiah” (christos) has the literal meaning “anointed one.”

1. The Messiah will have The Spirit rest upon Him

“Anointed One”
The Leader of Leaders…King of Kings
Isaiah 11:2 “2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and [of] understanding, the Spirit of counsel and [of] might, the Spirit of knowledge and [of] the fear of the Lord.”
7 Spirits “of”
Revelation 3:1 “1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “ ‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”
Isaiah 42:1–4 “1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.”

2. The Messiah is sent by The Father and Spirit

Anointed to…
Isaiah 48:16 “16 Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there.” And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit.”
Isaiah 61:1–2“1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;”
Luke 4:16–22 “16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?””

3. The Messiah who is promised is Jesus

Jesus Anointed…Acts 10:38 “38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
Jesus and the Holy Spirit have an intimate connection
Acts 16:7 “7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.”
Romans 8:9 “9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
Galatians 4:6 “6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!””
Christian Anointed…2 Corinthians 1:21 “21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us,”
We are to have an intimate connection with Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion/Reflection:
Do you recognize your own anointing by God, as a believer in the Anointed One (i.e. Christ/Messiah)?
Do you have an intimate connection with the Holy Spirit?

Talk It Over

How does the anointing of Old Testament leaders like Saul and David foreshadow the role of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of Jesus as the Messiah?
What is the significance of the Holy Spirit anointing Jesus for His mission, as seen in Isaiah 61:1-2 and Luke 4:18-19? How does this shape your understanding of Jesus’ ministry?
Acts 10:38 speaks of God anointing Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. How does this intimate connection between Jesus and the Holy Spirit impact our understanding of the Trinity and our own relationship with the Holy Spirit?
As believers, we are also anointed and connected with the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:21). How does this truth influence your daily life walk? Do you feel you are living out this anointing with the same power and purpose?
