title- the burial
luke 23 vs 50-56
Q. Have you ever seen someone wondering the parking lot for their car
I saw two kids yesterday just looking like goofballs at the mall
Thats why old people are really smart..
do you ever see an old person with a lufa on their car? \
there prepared to loose their car.
now have you ever realized that when your born into this world
your born into sin
and automatically a lost soul
some of you have parents to guide you to Christ
others dont
but it is always going to be a decision that you have to make on your own...
and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
the kingdom of God has come to us
and we are offered an invitation into this kingdom
today were going to be reading about a very religious rebel
who made the decision to seek after the kingdom of God
and were going to learn abit more about the burial of Jesus Christ
REKAP
Jesus arrested during jewish holiday passover
sweating blood in the garden
father if there is any way this cup could pass
nevertheless your will
judas betrays Him
He is arrested
the Jewish council condemn him guilty of sin of blasphemy
leading to death
roman govenor over jerusalem is pilate
He trys to release Jesus according to the custom
of letting go one prisoner
but the same people that yelled hossanna when Jesus came to Jerusalem a few days earlier
is now yelling crucify Him
Barabbas is let free instead
Q. What is this a picture of?
They condemn Jesus to the cross
He has carried His cross to calvary
and has been crucified.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Jesus becomes sin for us
He pays the price of our sin
being fully righteous and never sinning
yet takes the penalty for sin in the wrath of God on the cross
this is the payment and the offer stands
And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
after Jesus dies on the cross we see
an intriguing part of the story take place
the burial
most of the followers have been scattered and
out of fear went into hiding
except for a few
mainly women
and we will get to that point later but
we are now introduced to Joseph of Arimethea
Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
We see the burial of Jesus after His crucixion
most times the romans would leave the bodies on the cross
for days so that the birds would come and eat out their eyes
and people could see and trembel at the idea of causing trouble
but because of the passover season
and the sabbath
the romans allowed Joseph to take the body of Jesus down
Joseph of Arimathea
was a wealthy member of the sanhedrin
He was the council that ultimately convicted Jesus
We see that He was an upright man
He had objected the decision to convict Jesus
and we see why...
He was waiting for the kingdom of God
the greek word used for waiting
has the connection of recieving to it
He was anticipating the kingdom of God
and was looking to recieve it
He was anticipating and seeking
and He had found it in the person of Jesus Christ.
Q. Have you found the kingdom of God in Jesus Christ?
Q. Since you have found it , are you continuing to seek after Him?
Seek after the kingdom of God
Seek after the kingdom of God
I need this today
because we can get into the rut of just trying to learn about Jesus
instead of seeking Him
Jesus is the way the truth and the life
The entire gospel is about Jesus bringing the kingdom of God to earth.
His desire is that you would know God
and that you would enter into his kingdom.
and the only way to do that is to have your sin removed
God is holy
you are not
but Jesus makes you holy
by faith
and by faith
when you seek the kingdom of God
you will find the truth in Jesus Christ
this is what Joseph of Arimethea did
He was seeking truth
and when He found Jesus
He knew He found the kingdom of God
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
we see from scripture that seeking after Jesus
is neccessary to find Him and salvation
but it is also neccesary to continuing on in faith
the answer to all of your problems lies in seeking after the kingdom of heaven
but the devil will try to do whatever he can to keep you from seeking after God
Q, What can keep us from seeking after God with our whole heart?
remember grace…
He wants us to seek Him with our whole heart
because thats where peace and fullness of life is.
Joseph very well could have just stayed home
and watched tv
but he didnt,
He was seeking after His God
and it brought him to a very tough situation
and He played a very big role in the history of the kingdom.
could you imagine if he was just like, naa
Im not going to seek after the kingdom today…
lets turn our hearts to seeking after Jesus
We see in verse 52
the result of seeking after Gods kingdom
faith leads to action
faith leads to action
When you find Gods kingdom
it will lead to action
Faith always leads to works
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
could you imagine if joseph said, I love you Jesus
but …
I am going to let you sit on the cross and
im going to keep my tomb to myself…
but no
Joseph was totally selfless
His faith led him to asking for Jesus body
taking it off the cross
very hard and disgusting,,,
wraping it in cloth
and placing His dead body in the tomb that was reserved for Him
!!! What do we see again…
Picture..
Jesus lays in the tomb reserved for you
We also see that Joseph was willing to give what He had
this is a beautiful picture of giving up something valubale
it is a healthy reminder that all we have is Gods
and it is a good thing to be able to part with material things
for the kingdom of God
Are you willing to give of your time, talents, and treasures
are we willing to Give to God our best?
Joseph was willing to Give to God sacrificially
Because He had faith
He had a living faith that displayed action
the day that he put Jesus on the tomb was the day of preparing for the sabbath
now remember the sabbath was a day of rest
therefore nobody did work.
the Jews would even go as far as preparing their food the day before, so they did not have to labor over the kitchen…
so next time your parents ask you to
do chores on saturday
tell them its the sabbath and your not alllowed to work…
but do it as ajoke because honor your mother and father is a serious commandment
now we see in verse 55
that the women who came with Jesus from galillee followed and observed
I want to make the point that
this is one of the great defenses to the authenticity of scripture
we will detail this again in the ressurection
but Women played a huge role in the life, death, and ressurection of Jesus
and in this day they were considered to be second class citizens.
they were the brave ones
and the devout ones while the men went and hid for their lives
we see this in the church today
that women tend to be more dedicated to bible study and to seeking the Lord
and we see it here with the women mourning and doing what they could to help in the burial of Christ.
we read in ch 56
they even went back to get more spices and fragrance to put on the body after sabbath
and they rested according to Gods commandment
Rest in the finished work of Christ
Rest in the finished work of Christ
You do not have to earn Gods love
I repeat you do not have to earn Gods love
He loves you the same if you are in Christ
He is pleased with a righteous life
and His heart hurts when we sin
but His intention is that we turn from sin
because it hurts us
and it hurts him
out of love for Him we repent
and rest in His finished work
this means that when you sin you have
a savior named Jesus
who intercedes on your behalf
Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
At the sight of your sin
God the son , Jesus reminds God the father
I died on the cross to pay for that sin
that person is forgiven and justified by me
and their sin is no more
and if your faith is genuine
it will lead you to remorse
feeling bad , but its supposed to be conviction
not condemnation
and out of love you can remember that Jesus went to the grave for you
He burried your sin in that Grave
you can remember that your sin is paid for
and you can remember that He was risen from the dead
we will get into the resurrection next week
but I want you to remember that Jesus died for you
it is finished
He took your tomb
and because of that
you can rest
Jesus has become your sabbath rest
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
Jesus has become your sabbath rest
enter it by faith
you dont have to work for your salvation
you can rest in His finished work
be reminded
if your in Christ
you can rest
because your sin is forgiven
and He loves you
rest in that ?
maybe you dont have that,
you can have that rest and assurance today
lets pray..
Lord thank you for taking our sin in the grave
--- If you know Jesus - take this time to pray to him and get your heart right
thank him for the rest that you have that you dont need to earn his love...
-if you want to recieve Jesus
raise your hand
