1 Timothy 6
Introduction: In the last major section of this letter Paul called on Timothy to instruct the members of various groups within the church concerning their Christian duty.
1. (V1) Bondservant
1. (V1) Bondservant
a) A bondservant is a slave
The Greek word doulos, which means “one who is subservient to, and entirely at the disposal of, his master; a slave.”
The Hebrew word for “bondservant,” ‘ebed, had a similar meaning. However, the Mosaic Law allowed an indentured servant to become a bondservant voluntarily:
b) The Bible does not advocate for slavery, but gives instruction for the cultural norm
Colossians 3:22–24 “Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
Application: Many of you have jobs, so the application is that you ought to be a hard worker, not working for man but for God
That God is not blasphemed
Blasphemy is verbal or written reproach of God's name, character, work, or attributes. Blasphemy was a serious crime in the law God gave to ..
2. (V2) Those who have a believing master
2. (V2) Those who have a believing master
a) Work just as hard for your believing master
I work even harder at the church than I ever have working in my previous profession.
No way would I work on my days off for the motorcycle shop, but I do that week in and week out for the church
Application: Don’t take advantage of a believing boss by not working hard
3. (V3) If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words
3. (V3) If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words
a) Paul warning Timothy about those who have left the word of God to promote his own ideas
The word consent means to agree to
You don’t have to be an active opponent of God’s word to be an enemy of it. If we fail to give the Bible its rightful place in our life and in our preaching, we oppose God’s word.
There are different ways that people do not consent to the truth of God’s Word.
· Some deny God’s Word.
· Some ignore God’s Word.
· Some explain away God’s Word.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
4. (V4-5) Those who are obsessed with disputes are arguments
4. (V4-5) Those who are obsessed with disputes are arguments
a) From such withdraw yourself
There is a difference between someone who has an honest question and those who seek to start an argument
5. (V6-10) Godliness with contentment is great gain
5. (V6-10) Godliness with contentment is great gain
a) Godliness
The New Testament word for godliness, in its original meaning, conveys the idea of it, a personal attitude toward God that results in actions that are pleasing to him. This personal attitude toward God is what we call devotion to God.
Devotion to God
The fear of God
The love of God
The desire for God.
