At some point, most of us will hit a wall in life. It feels like there’s just too much on your plate, like you’re drowning in responsibilities, and you just can’t take it anymore. Maybe you’ve been there recently. Maybe you’re there right now.
Whether it’s a complicated relationship, a mountain of work, or a never-ending list of to-dos, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. And when you find yourself in that place, modern culture has a message for you: “You are enough.”
It’s everywhere—blogs, podcasts, social media influencers—all telling us, “You’ve got this. You’re enough. You have what it takes.” But the truth is, despite how good that message sounds, it’s not true. And believing it can lead us down a dangerous path.
The Lie of "You Are Enough":
Culture tells us that we are enough. It says, “Believe in yourself, you’ve got this.” We’re told we’re perfect just the way we are. But if that’s true, why don’t we feel like it? Why do we still struggle, feel inadequate, and come up short?
The reason is simple: we’re not enough. Not even close. Without Christ, we aren’t enough, and we never will be. That’s not a popular message, but it’s the truth.
John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me."
This verse emphasizes that without Christ, we are not sufficient on our own. 2 Corinthians 3:5 "It is not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God."
This passage directly challenges the idea of self-sufficiency, pointing to God as the source of our adequacy. Philippians 4:13 "I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me."
While this verse is often quoted for encouragement, it’s important to note that the strength comes through Christ, not from within ourselves. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
This verse highlights that all of us are inadequate and in need of Christ’s redemption. Isaiah 64:6 "All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind."
This verse expresses that even our best efforts are insufficient without God.
The Dangers of Believing You’re Enough:
This idea that we’re enough without God is not just a feel-good message; it’s a false gospel. It turns us into our own saviors, and that’s a burden we were never meant to carry.
The Paul warns us in Colossians 2:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” Paul is reminding us that saying we are enough without God are empty philosophies, and they come from human thinking, not from Christ.
When we believe we’re enough, we either fall into pride, thinking we can handle everything on our own, or we fall into despair when we inevitably realize we can’t. Either way, we take our eyes off God and put them on ourselves, and that’s where we stumble.
The Truth About Who We Are Without Christ:
Without Christ, we are far from enough. The Bible tells us that without Him, we are dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1) As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
We are without hope, spiritually blind, and objects of God’s wrath. That’s not easy to hear, but it’s necessary for us to understand the depth of our need for Him.
Embracing Our Need for Jesus:
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to be enough. You weren’t designed to be enough. You were designed to need Jesus. When we stop trying to be our own saviors and start relying on Him, that’s when we find true strength, peace, and sufficiency.
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 3:5 that our sufficiency is not from ourselves, but from God. When we are weak, His power is made perfect. In our insufficiency, He is more than enough.
Application: Where Are You Relying on Yourself?
So here’s the challenge for you today: In what area of your life are you relying on yourself instead of God? Maybe it’s your finances, your relationships, or your future. Whatever it is, God is calling you to trust Him with it.
Stop trying to be enough on your own and start depending on the one who is. Jesus is your helper when you’re helpless, your strength when you’re weak, your hope when you’re depressed, and your peace when you’re anxious.
Conclusion: Call on Him
If you’re overwhelmed, if you’re hitting that wall, call on Jesus. He is more than enough for whatever you’re facing. And when you do, He will meet you right where you are.
Let’s pray together. Father, we acknowledge that we are not enough on our own. We need You. Help us to stop relying on ourselves and to trust You completely. Meet us in our weakness and show us Your strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
