Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church
Mt 19:23-30
I have a friend who is a Cistercian monk, and I spent four years with him learning a lot. One thing I've always admired about him is his heavenward attitude. From his attire to how he interacts with people and views the world, he sees everything in light of the divine. He appears unconcerned with earthly matters, which keeps him free from many temptations and attachments. Curious, I once asked him why he is so detached from earthly things and worldly temptations. He explained that as a Cistercian monk, they strive to live a life of simplicity, free from unnecessary distractions and material possessions. This simplicity fosters detachment and allows monks to deepen their relationship with God and their community.
Today, we also celebrate a saint from the Cistercian order: Saint Bernard, the abbot and Doctor of the Church. His life resonates deeply with the Gospel message of embracing poverty, humility, and devotion to God.
Saint Bernard was born into wealth and privilege but chose to live out the Gospel teachings by embracing a life of radical simplicity and humility. His life exemplified the Gospel's call to detach from worldly possessions and focus on eternal treasures.
One notable story from Saint Bernard's life occurred during a schism in the Church. He was called upon to arbitrate between two rival claimants to the papacy: Anacletus II and Innocent II.
Bernard tirelessly convinced kings, bishops, and leaders to support the legitimate Pope Innocent II against the antipope. His reputation as a counselor, preacher, writer, and unifying leader within the Church was well-established. Despite his influence, Bernard remained humble, turning down high-ranking positions in the Church, including the Archbishopric of Reims.
Saint Bernard's choice to reject worldly wealth and prioritize spiritual rewards reminds us of the Gospel's challenge to discipleship. While the journey may be difficult and demanding, the rewards of following Christ surpass everything we can imagine. We are encouraged to trust in God's providence, knowing that with God, all things are possible.
In following Saint Bernard's example, we strive for simplicity, humility, and seeking eternal treasures rather than fleeting earthly rewards.
May God bless us all.
