Text: Luke 7:36–39 “And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.”
Matthew 27:56 “Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.”
Matthew 27:61 KJV 1900
And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
Mark 15:40 KJV 1900
There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
Mark 15:47 KJV 1900
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
Mark 16:1 KJV 1900
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Mark 6:3 KJV 1900
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
We have established already that this nameless women in Luke 7 is Mary, the sister of Martha. We know that because of...
John 11:2 KJV 1900
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
We established that the anointing that takes place in Luke 7 is a different anointing then that which took place in John 12, Matthew 26, and Mark 14, which is the anointing that occurs after Jesus raised Lazarus her brother from the dead and only 6 days before the passover where He would lay down His life for the sin of all mankind.
However the John account doesn’t tell us who’s house they are in… We actually learn who’s house they are in over in Mark’s gospel where he records these events...
Mark 14:3 “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.”
and…
Matthew 26:7 “There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.”
But notice the woman is not names in these accounts, only in John’s account is she named, and in fact the two occasions in which Jesus was anointed, it is John account that tells us her name in both occasions even though one is only describing for us who Mary is...
Mary Magdalene - Who is she?
Luke 8:1–3 KJV 1900
And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Her name is one that we all know very well but did you know that there are only three events in which we see her by that name in all of the Scriptures? The first one is in Luke 8, and from there we see her at the cross and at the tomb where she comes to anoint the body of Christ on the first day of the week… The only time that we see her prior to the cross in is Luke 8...
Does it make sense to you, that Mary Magdalene is seen in Luke 8 ministering unto Christ, and then not seen again until the foot of His cross standing next to His mother, oh, and is the first one that Jesus shows Himself alive after his resurrection?
That’s because she is throughout and her name is still Mary, but she isn’t called Mary Magdalene… The association with Magdalene simply means that she was from the city called Magdala which was a Jewish city on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Which is where Jesus is after His temptation in the wilderness beginning in...
Luke 4:14–16 KJV 1900
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
From Nazareth he...
Luke 4:31 KJV 1900
And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
In the synagogue there He heels a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil…
He leaves the synagogue and enter’s into Simon’s house… By the way this is Simon Peter… Where he heals the mother of Simon’s wife…
Luke 4:41 KJV 1900
And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Luke 4:44 KJV 1900
And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
Luke 5:1 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
This is the Sea of Galilee, and the place that he calls 4 of His disciples...
Luke 5:1-11.
He heals a leper, heals a man taken with palsy, Levi follows him, he gets into it with the Pharisees, all before chapter 6…
He went into a mountain to pray, and chose His 12 disciples…
His fame is spreading into every land, and then...
Luke 7:1 KJV 1900
Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
Which is in Galilee...
Luke 8:2 KJV 1900
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
Still in Galilee,
Luke 8:22-25 they are on the Sea of Galilee, then Luke 8:26 “And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.”
Luke 9:6 KJV 1900
And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
Luke 9:10 KJV 1900
And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
Still in Galilee...
Then finally, Luke 9:51–52 “And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.”
It is very reasonable to believe that Mary Magdalene and Mary the sister of Lazarus are the same person…
There are three occasions in which Christ in Galilee in these chapter heals people that have evil spirits. Two of those occasions he heals everybody…
Luke 8:2 KJV 1900
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
Luke 7:40-47.
Why was she there crying and kissing his feat, which Jesus says her sins which are many are forgiven… By the way they are in Galilee, which is where Jesus has been since His baptism… Why else would she be there if she had not been one that was healed?
I know we associate her with Bethany because it is where she lives when we see her with her siblings… But who’s house is it?
Luke 10:38–42 KJV 1900
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Closing- John 12:1-8.
Mark 16:9 KJV 1900
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
