Joshua 24:1–2 (NIV84)
1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. 2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 14 “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” 16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”
How often do you men wear neckties in public? That is not really fashionable anymore, is it? Even wearing one to a regular worship service may be rare for you. Most likely to a wedding or a funeral but not on a day like today. As a pastor, part of my required “uniform” is to wear a necktie. At least for the worship service. Very seldom to I wear one otherwise. But when I do wear a necktie in public, I have noticed over the years that this particular necktie gets the most compliments.
Is it the design?
Is it the message?
Maybe both?
I remember purchasing this tie for myself when I saw it on a rack at Walmart. Although Walmart still sells neckties online, I don’t think they have them on the rack and they don’t offer this particular one. I did see it for $26.00 at another vendor. It must be my favorite tie because it is wearing out at the neck.
A necktie can be used to present a message which this one does. Of course, there is more to serving the Lord than just wearing a tie that says you are serving the Lord. Many years before the invention of the necktie, this is the challenge that Joshua presented to the people of Israel. His own response and their promise teaches us how important it it to be committed to serving the Lord.
