1 Corinthians 1:18, comes to mind: "For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." For those who are perishing, Noah and the Ark is a mere fairy tale. For those who are perishing, Jonah and the whale is far-fetched. For those who are perishing, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is foolish. However, to those who are being saved, these precious truths of the Bible bring us to the power of Jesus Christ and His gospel.
So, what’s the difference? The word of the cross being either foolishness or powerful, life-changing good news hinges upon the work of the Spirit. John 1:12-13 says this: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” Under a Middle Eastern night sky roughly 2000 years ago, Jesus told a man named Nicodemus that “unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” and “unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:3, 5). By faith, some trust God and take Him at His Word. According to their own wisdom and ways, others doubt God’s Word and place their faith in their own understanding.
