PETITIONING THE LORD IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE
Psalm 136:1 (NKJV) Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
‘for his love has no end’
Give thanks is not the whole meaning of this word it basically means ‘confess’ or ‘acknowledge’ and therefore calls us to thoughtful, grateful worship
The psalm proceeds to do this, speaking here of his:-
(1)character and sovereignty (2, 3);
then of what he has made and done (4ff.),
and what he continues to do (25).
Steadfast love is the word ḥesed
True love
Loving kindness
“For his love has no end” is the preferred alternative to “His love endures forever”
But when we see that all these greatnesses spring from an unchanging love which delights to manifest power in mercy and provision
Therefore we, with our pilgrim brothers and sisters of the OT church, can retrace our foundational pilgrimage from Egypt to Canaan and sing with them at every step that his love has no end
No power can resist him
we are safe because the world we live in is his world (4–9);
we too experience redemption
enjoy provision irrespective of circumstance (16; Phil. 4:12–13, 19),
enter into our inheritance through his victory (17–22; Col. 1:12–14),
We are surpised at how much he considers us.
We eat our daily bread, looking with gratitude to the hand that feeds us
The love that endures for ever, his love has no end
Philippians 4:6–8 (NKJV) — 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) — 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Psalm 145:9 (NKJV) 9 The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.
Psalm 50:10–16 (NKJV) — 10 For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness. 13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. 15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” 16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to declare My statutes, Or take My covenant in your mouth,
