We have discussed 11 of the 12 disicples
Peter and Andrew, fishers of men
James and John, the Sons of Thunder
Philip and Bartholomew, who invite people to meet Jesus
Thomas and Matthew, with faith supported by details and evidence
James, Thaddeus and Simon, One of whom was a zealot, were redeemed by Jesus.
Matthew 10:1–4 ESV
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
I we read these verses several times already, and Judas is included in them but lets read the next few verses
Matthew 10:5–10 ESV
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.
How often do we forget that Judas was there for all of this.
Judas Healed People
Judas Cast out Demons
Judas was all in on Jesus’s ministry.
he had a full part of it.
Yet he still betrayed Jesus.
WHY?
Well it could be for many reasons.
First Lets look at his last name - Iscariot
There are a few ideas of what this name could mean
It might be realted to Sicarius
the daggers used by the zealots
In which case Judas was a Zealot, like Simon the Zealot,
Following Jesus because he thinks he’s going to fight off the romans
And then Jesus starts preaching about Peace, and seems to have more anger for the religious authoriites than the romans.
It could aslo be broken into Ish - man and Kiriat - City, the man of the city.
A man more concerned with the world than with God.
This is someone who follows Jesus for the perks
Yes - it is cool to be able to heal people and cast out demons!
Yes it is cool to have that type of authority and be part of an seemingly unstoppable movement,
But his heart was never in it.
John 12:1–8 ESV
Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
Notice what John says, Judas was in charge of the ministy’s finances, and he would embezzle from them,
He was literally robbing Jesus.
When Mark shares this story, he explains that Jesus refusing to interupt mary’s worship drove Judas to betray him
Mark 14:10–11 ESV
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.
Luke Says that Satan entered into Judas.
His love of money and power drove him to reject the messiah.
And of course Jesus knew the entire time.
Mark 14:18–21 ESV
And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Judas leaves passover,
and then leads the authorities to where Jesus was staying in the garden of Gethsemene.
And after Jesus’s arrest Judas begins to feel remorse,
but it is too late.
Jesus warned that it would be bad for them.
Matthew 27:3–5 ESV
Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
He was driven to despair, because he betrayed Jesus.
Church why do i tell you these things?
Because it is possible to be close to Jesus, to even be in ministry, and to even to be doing amazing things, but still not have your heart in the right place.
There are false teachers, flasde prophets, and even people who do miracles who are not in it for Jesus, but in it for themselves, and the fame, and the money.
Jesus warned us about such people.
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Church do you hear Jesus’s teachings here?
the people say “didn’t we prophecy, and Cast out demons, and do many mighty works?”
But Jesus never knew them.
Or rather, they never knew Jesus.
So Judas was replaced,
Acts 1:15–26 ESV
In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “ ‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “ ‘Let another take his office.’ So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Matthias was part of the ministry from the beginning, he wasn;t one of the 12, but he was a close follower of Jesus.
He was likely one of the 72 when the 12 disicples trained other disicples to go and do the same things
Luke 10:1–9 ESV
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
So Matthias who had a heart for following Jesus, had almost all the same experiences as Judas, and he took Judas’s place as an apostle.
Very little is know of matthias otherwise.
THere are some differing church traditions as to where he went and how he died.
He evidently preached in Cappaodcia - the modern day nation of Gerogia, and Ethiopia
In Ethiopia he preached to cannibals
He was eventually killed either by crucifixion or beheading.
Like the other disciples
Church, what do we learn from all of this?
There are people out there who claim to be prophets and healers who have nothing to do with JEsus.
There are people who appear as christian but are driven by their true god, Money - wealth or influence.
Jesus knows who these people are, and he will deal with them.
But for every Judas - every false teacher, there are several who truely follow jesus.
Church, LEts be people like Matthais, who are willing to step up and follow Jesus,
