Introduction:
John 20:19 NASB95
19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Context:
Mark 16:12–16 (NASB95)
12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.
13 They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.
14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
Luke 24:33–37 (NASB95)
33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them,
34 saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.”
35 They began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
36 While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.”
37 But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit.

THE BOLD ^^^
Back to John 20:19.
John 20:19–20 NASB95
19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus gave them physical evidence.
No ghost
But the man they spent 3 years alongside
Luke 24:42–43“42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; 43 and He took it and ate it before them.”
It was this moment that supplied the zeal they would have for the rest of their ministry
John 20:21 NASB95
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Peace:
Philippians 4:6–7 “6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
THE GREAT COMMISSION:
John 20:22–23 NASB95
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
WAS this, the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
If so, Thomas was excluded
Also, if this was done on the first of 40 days… it can’t be the same thing
2 views:
One view is that Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on them to empower them until the day of Pentecost… a temporary & preparatory indwelling that would look forward to the permanent indwelling weeks later
The other view is that Jesus’s breathing was simply a promise, with Pentecost in mind. That Jesus didn’t impart them the Spirit at that time, but a pledge was given that they would soon be endowed with the Spirit
What I believe?? Is that this is found in the greater context of the great commission..
The Holy Spirit, the breath of God, is pictured throughout the Bible as giving life
God breathed into the nostrils of Adam… life
God breathed on the dead bones in Ezekiel’s vision.. Ezekiel 37.. bones came to life
Therefore Jesus is commissioning the apostles with His mission which will give life to all who hear and obey
a clear lesson: when you want assurance.. look to the wounds of Jesus. They are evidence of his love, sacrifice, victory and resurrection
Thomas separated himself from the apostles… therby not seeing Jesus…
Jesus’ pleas for unity when he leaves
Thomas didn’t doubt… he refused to believe.
He had RELIABLE eyewitnesses!
There is a clear lesson: When you want assurance, look to the wounds of Jesus. They are evidence of His love, of His sacrifice, of His victory, of His resurrection.
