Introduction:
What should be the thing that brings true joy in our life?
How can we continue in our christian walk without growing weary and losing our joy?
Where do we find our true joy?
Here we see the instructions that Jesus gives His disciples about their relationship with God and where to find their joy
Jesus has sent out the 70 te evangelize and to announce the arrival of the kingdom of God
It has obviously been a very successful trip
The disciples have experienced the power of God in their lives in such a way they would never expect
But Jesus uses this opportunity to remind them of what is the true cause of joy for His followers
1. The Joy Of Salvation v. 17-20
1. The Joy Of Salvation v. 17-20
We see that the disciples return with great joy from their trip
They are so happy that God has used them in their travels
There is nothing wrong with the joy they were experiencing
They are happy because they have seen that they are part of the Lord’s work
They’ve seen that God is working through them
They’ve seen how the authority that Jesus gave them was greater than what they could imagine
They found great joy in their service of the Lord
They didn’t come back full of pride and expecting complements
They were happy to see the power of God in their lives
They returned calling Him “Lord”
They even acknowledged that the demons were subject to them in “His name”
The kingdom of God and it’s enemies v. 18-19
The kingdom of God and it’s enemies v. 18-19
Here Jesus expresses either a prophecy or a vision of what was happening as the disciples went out
Jesus says “while you were preaching the gospel y casting out demons, I saw how God’s kingdom was moving forward and Satan was losing the battle”
The kingdom of God is advancing and the power of Satan is losing
This shows us who our true enemy is Ephesians 6:12
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The Bible tells us that Satan is:
The prince of this world John 12:31
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
The prince of the power of the air Ephesians 2:2
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
He’s the god of this world 2 Corinthians 4:4
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
He is a murderer and the father of lies John 8:44
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
But Jesus promises that we will have the victory of him Matthew 16:18; Romans 16:20; Revelation 12:9
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
But rejoice in your salvation v. 20
But rejoice in your salvation v. 20
What haappens when I’m not successful? at God is going to use us, it’s aeven more beautiful to remember we are saved
Jesus calls His disciples to rejoice not so much in what they have done for God but what He has done for them
He calls them to rejoice not in the things they have done for God but that they know and are known by god
Serving but unsaved
Serving but unsaved
First of all we need to remember that just because someone is serving Jesus that doesn’t mean that that person is saved
People can serve Jesus in a lot of ways but still not know Christ
Judas was among the group of people that were sent out to preach
Jesus says in Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
What happens when I’m not successful?
What happens when I’m not successful?
Secondly we need to ask ourselves “What is going to happen when the devils, per se, don’t submit?”
What happens when we don’t have a ministry?
What happens when we lose our opportunities to help, share, preach, disciple, etc.?
What happens when we lose our voice?
What happens when God sends us to a place or a ministry where we don’t see the response or the success we were expecting?
The joy of salvation
The joy of salvation
Jesus says “Don’t rejoice in your power or success. Rejoice in your salvation!”
The Bible tells us in Psalms 21:1, 51:12; Habacuc 3:18
1 The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; And in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.
18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
Of all the wonderful miracles we could ever witness, the miracles of salvation is the most wonderful one
Joy is a hallmark of salvation
The Bible tells us that there is a “book of life” where the names of the children of God are written Revelation 20:11-15
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
We are called to rejoice in the fact that our names are written in that book
The demons that those disciples cast out would one day be in the lake of fire
The people that those disciples healed would one day pass away
The ministries that these disciples did would one day cease
Their success would be fleeting
But what would remain forever and ever was their names written in the book of life
If my name is written in that book then I know I will spend eternity with Jesus
If my name is written in that book then I know I’ll be transformed
If my name is written in that book then I know that He will never leave me or forsake me
If my name is written in that book then I know that Jesus intercedes for me
If my name is written in that book then I know that there is nothing that can separate me from the love of God
This Joy Is Available To Everyone v. 21
This Joy Is Available To Everyone v. 21
This great joy isn’t something distant that only a few can attain
Jesus has instead revealed these things even to the most lowly person
This was the first message he preached in Luke 4:18-19
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Jesus here doesn’t rejoice because God has hidden these things but because he has revealed them
He’s not willing that any should perish 2 Peter 3:9
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Jesus rejoices that these truths about salvation are dependent on natural ability or education
When the 70 were preaching they didn’t find the wise and educated
They found the “common” people that accepted the word Luke 7:29-30; 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
The joy of salvation and of belonging to His kingdom has been revealed to the ones who would least expect it
Jesus had absolute joy and happiness about this truth
It has pleased the Father to reveal Himself to people through His Son
Salvation isn’t something that can be earned Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
He is the payment or propitiation for our sins 1 John 2:2
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Christ came to the world to save sinners 1 Timothy 1:15
15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
He came to seek and to save Luke 19:10
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
So Jesus says that whoever receives Him and believes on Him can be saved John 1:12; Romans 10:9, 13
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Salvation is available to all who receive the Saviors invitation Matthew 11:28
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
3. This Joy Is Exclusively Through Jesus v. 22
3. This Joy Is Exclusively Through Jesus v. 22
These verses show us the unity between the Son and the Father
Jesus calls Him “Father” 5 times in these 2 verses
He calls himself “Son” 3 times
All things are delivered to me
All things are delivered to me
Here we see that Jesus is all of God
“All things” means all the things that were revealed in Christ Jesus
His deity
His Messiahship
His miracles
The gospel
The kingdom
All of God is in Jesus permanently Colossians 2:9
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Knowing the Father
Knowing the Father
Jesus is the Word made flesh John 1:14, 18; 1 John 5:20
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
We can only know the Father through the Son
Jesus says He is the only way John 14:6
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus continues this thought and Philip even doubts John 14:7-9
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Jesus is the only one who can reveal the Father to us
It is only through Him that one can be saved John 3:18
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Jesus is the only mediator 1 Timothy 2:5
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Salvation is only for the person who is willing to admit that they can’t know God through their own wisdom and knowledge apart from Jesus
Salvation isn’t for the intelligent, wise, proud and boastful
Salvation is the for the person that admits they are ignorant, foolish, humble, broken and contrite Psalms 34:18; 51:17
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Blessed
Blessed
This great privilege of seeing and knowing the Messiah is something that prophets and kings have longed to see for centuries
They preached about it
The waited for it
They hoped for it
But they never saw it
And now the disciples had the great privilege of seeing Jesus face to face
And now we have the great privilege of seeing Jesus through His word 2 Peter 1:19
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
What a great joy to know that my name is written in the book of life!
What a great joy to know that I am safe in the arms of Jesus!
Do you know Him?
Are you saved?
Do you know where you’d go if you died today?
Do you want to know Him?
