PSALM 119 OVERVIEW Author: Not known for sure; some believe it is David. From the Psalm it may be a younger man who is facing opposition. Date: Unknown but likely during the United Kingdom (David and Solomon) Occasion (life situation): Time of hardship, desperation, need of God’s help. PSALM 119 OVERVIEW Structure: •22 sections of 8 verses •Acrostic of the Hebrew Alphabet •Mosaic or quilt that drives you to meditation on the Word of God Theme: Value of and Commitment to God’s Word The Law and Me PSALM 119:1-8 (Obedience) The blessed obey the law of the Lord 1 (Heart) The blessed seek God’s testimonies with their whole heart 2 (Holy) The blessed are holy, following God’s ways 3 (Commitment) God has given directives that must be kept diligently 4 (Commitment) I must steadfastly keep God’s statutes 5 (Holy) I don’t have to be in shame when I stay focused on God’s commands 6 (Heart) I will worship God for his holy directives 7 (Obedience) I will enjoy God’s continued work when I keep doing God’s The Blessed (Obedience) The blessed obey the law of the Lord 1 (Heart) The blessed seek God’s testimonies with their whole heart 2 (Holy) The blessed are holy, following God’s ways 3 The Commitment (Commitment) God has given directives that must be kept diligently 4 (Commitment) I must steadfastly keep God’s statutes 5 (Holy) I don’t have to be in shame when I stay focused on God’s commands 6 (Heart) I will worship God for his holy directives 7 (Obedience) I will enjoy God’s continued work when I keep doing God’s THE LAW AND ME 1. God’s favor is on the person who completely follows God’s way. (manner of life is holy). 1 B. God’s favor is on the person who pursues God with all his being (from his whole heart.) 2 C. God’s favor is on the person who doesn’t THE LAW AND ME 1. God’s favor is upon the person who pursues holiness with their whole heart while actively avoiding sin. 1-3 (The Blessed) 2. I must be personally committed to following God’s Word. 4-5 3. The blessing of pursuing God’s Word is a vibrant relationship with God. 6-8 THE BLESSING OF PURSUING GOD’S WORD A. I don’t have to live in shame. I am in right relationship with God. 6 B. I worship God from a pure heart. 7 C. I enjoy God’s continued work in my life. 8 THE LAW AND ME 1. God’s favor is upon the person who pursues holiness with their whole heart while actively avoiding sin. 1-3 (The Blessed) 2. I must be personally committed to following God’s Word. 4-5 3. The blessing of pursuing God’s Word is a vibrant relationship with God. 6-8 I MUST BE COMMITTED TO PURSUING GOD’S WORD WITH MY WHOLE HEART TO HAVE A VIBRANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. APPLICATION 1. Do I want what God wants? To what am I committed? 2. This section drives me to asking what drives my choices in life—God’s Word or something else? APPLICATION 3. Understanding the direct relationship of God’s commands and holiness is important for determining what my choices will be. 4. To have God’s favor on my life, the Word of God must be the driving force behind my life choices (in my life). APPLICATION 5. True happiness in life today is not found in pursuing my desires by God’s desires. DILIGENTLY PURSUE GOD’S WORD TO HAVE A VIBRANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
