DECLARATION:
Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.
We are reaching out to our family, friends, and neighbors as the body of Christ.

INTRODUCTION:
Review:
OT Looked Towards a A NEW ERA
Matthew 9:17 “17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.””
Wine…Divine Blessing in OT (Prov. 3:9-10)
Wine…lifestytle of Drunk with wine Contrasted to the Spirit-Filled Life (Eph. 5:18)
Wine…First Miracle (John 2:1-12)
Wine…Christ’s Blood (1 Cor. 11:25) for NEW COVENANT
WHY?…
New Era For Us Today AS SANGAMON VALLEY CHURCH!
New Bucket = new WINESKIN
Not just a new name!
GRATEFUL FOR WHAT GOD FULFILLED IN PRIOR BUCKET/WINESKIN
TODAY: How does the Holy Spirit renew the people of God?
Opening Scripture:
4 Ways the Holy Spirit RENEWS the Church:
1. The Holy Spirit Is Within Us
1. The Holy Spirit Is Within Us
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 “16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.”
“Temple” was familiar to Jews and Gentiles as a physical building where God dwelled!
Jewish Temple is probably preferred with the Holy of Holies in mind, the place God’s Spirit Inhabited until the Cross and then Pentecost.
The Spirit is poured out on the Day of Pentecost outside the Holy of Holies inside Temple…outside their traditions!
A Spirit-Filled Sanctuary
“Destroy” is implying God’s wrath and thus a need for holiness
We must be responsible builders
Not building on mere human will power
Not building on mere human traditions (old wineskins)
Not building on pagan/worldly things
Not building on lights, stages, nor personalities
Build by the message of Jesus’ sinless life, sacrificial death, resurrection, and ascension!
Build by being a Spirit-filled community
4 Ways the Holy Spirit RENEWS the Church:
1. The Holy Spirit Is Within Us
2. The Holy Spirit Binds Us Together
2. The Holy Spirit Binds Us Together
1 Corinthians 12:13 “13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.”
The Spirit Distinguishes the believer from the nonbeliever
No longer _____, there is a distinction from what was to what is now (old vs. new WINESKIN)…what was is in prior life is not significant…what is significant is being “one body”
This most likely is not referencing a subsequent empowerment by the Holy Spirit.
4 Ways the Holy Spirit RENEWS the Church:
1. The Holy Spirit Is Within Us
2. The Holy Spirit Binds Us Together
3. The Holy Spirit Fellowships with The Church
3. The Holy Spirit Fellowships with The Church
2 Corinthians 13:14 “14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
“fellowship”(Gk. Koinonia) is participating or associating
“the sense of community created by the Holy Spirit” or “participation in the Holy Spirit” (EGGNT:2 Cor)
The same Spirit present in a limited way in the OT is now creating a community where He participates with all. (old vs. new WINESKIN)
4 Ways the Holy Spirit RENEWS the Church:
1. The Holy Spirit Is Within Us
2. The Holy Spirit Binds Us Together
3. The Holy Spirit Fellowships with The Church
4. The Holy Spirit Is In Partnership with The Church
4. The Holy Spirit Is In Partnership with The Church
Participating by creating community and being present with…Also participating with us in our task!
Revelation 22:17 “17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
Revelation 22:1 “1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb”
Water of Life & wine…Isaiah 55:1 “1 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
“AND”…Spirit AND The Bride say…COME to the water of life!
The Holy Spirit Partnered with SVCC and is Partnering with SVC!
Sangamon Valley Church is launching this month as we celebrate the ministry of the oldest wineskin “SVCC” in September of 1980!…Who was there? 1st year? “Green house”? Another wineskin of “Foursquare Charter” in 1989? THANK YOU!
Old wineskin brittle and already stretched
New wineskin still can be stretched
new wineskin… Are you ready for the new wine to be poured out? Pray for God to RENEW US and make us new wineskins ready to be used by him! God make us flexible!
Conclusion/Reflection:
Let us consider the dual images moving into the NEW ERA of SVC…as the Body (flexible) and the Temple (renewed) by the Holy Spirit.
As the Temple, we are called to be renewed in our worship—to live lives that honor God, reflecting His holiness in every aspect of our being. ***FOLLOWING JESUS***
As the Body, we are called to be flexible as we serve—to care for one another, to build each other up, and to reach out to the lost with the love of Christ. ***REACHING OUT***
PRAYER: May we, as SANGAMON VALLEY CHURCH, be faithful partners with the Holy Spirit, living out our calling with purpose, passion, and a deep sense of reverence for the One who renews us. Let us serve, worship, and go forth into our places of work and play with the power of the Holy Spirit, fulfilling the mission to which we have been called. Amen.
***COMMUNION***
1 Corinthians 11:24–27 “24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.”
Communion is a chance to RENEW our commitment to God and embrace the new WINESKIN that He has for us as SVC.
Are you willing to be renewed? Are you willing to be flexible?…1 Corinthians 11:28 “28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”
TALK IT OVER
TALK IT OVER
What does it mean to you personally that the Holy Spirit dwells within you as God’s temple? How does this truth influence your daily life and decisions?
In what ways have you experienced the unity of the Body of Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit? How can we as a church maintain this unity?
Reflecting on Revelation 22:17, how do you see the Holy Spirit partnering with the Church in inviting others to know Christ? What role can you play in this mission?
Considering both the Body and the Temple of the Holy Spirit, how can we approach our calling to serve others with our calling to live lives of worship and holiness?
