Restate
The core, the substance of all of God’s commandments is to help us to understand what it is to love God.
We are to love God with all of our being, like pushing with all our strength, or striving to understand Him in His Word, or to constrain our desires to that which He wants. The proof of that is that we will use all of our being to love others that are made in His Image.
Ask if anyone has questions then define terminology
Definitions and Examples for Key Terms
Essence: Definition: The most important part of something Illustration: Imagine squeezing an orange to get the juice. The juice is the essence of the orange—it's what matters most. Similarly, the essence of the Ten Commandments is that God requires that we love Him by loving others more than ourselves.Cross Reference: Matthew 22:37–40“And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.””
Sacrificially: Definition: Doing something that costs you something; It is giving something up Illustration: Think of a soldier that risks his life to save a wounded comrade. Cross Reference: John 15:13 ““Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”
Entire Being: Definition: Everything that makes us up. This includes our thoughts, feelings, actions, speech and things we want . Illustration: Loving God with your entire being is like the last 100 yards of a race. Does Coach Rhody have you finish at a dead sprint not holding anything back? Cross Reference: Matthew 22:37 “And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’”
Prioritizing Others: Definition: Prioritizing others means they are more important to us than ourselves Illustration: It’s like when you go on a hike and forget to bring food and get hungry and your dad gives you his candy bar. Cross Reference: Philippians 2:3–4“doing nothing from selfish ambition or vain glory, but with humility of mind regarding one another as more important than yourselves, not merely looking out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
So why does this matter?
*Jesus loves God sacrificially and He showed it by sacrificing Himself to even save God’s image bearers!!! Galatians 2:20““I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”
*We are to love people even when they are not nice, not kind, ugly or different Luke 6:35““But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to the ungrateful and evil.”
If we claim to love God but hate others we actually do not know God at all 1 John 4:20“If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.”
The Christian is empowered to love in the same way that Christ was through His Spirit Galatians 5:22–23“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
