Introduction
I’ve mentioned this in a previous sermon…that the artest Hadaway…came out with his one only smash hit “What is Love”...
The contagious and unforgettable chorus goes:
“What is love? Baby don’t hurt me, Don’t hurt me, no more.”
This song was made famous by Will Ferrel and Chris Kataan of Saturday Night Live fame in the 90s.
There is your musical and tv trivia moment for the day…
I’m not sure if Hadaway knew it or not…but he was asking an important theological question...What is love?
And along with that question…he references the least favorite human emotion or experience…often associated with love…and that is pain. Don’t hurt me…no more.
Some say grief ...is the price we pay for love…grief is painful and uncomfortable…but it is in proportion to how much we loved the person (or thing) we’ved lost.
How are we…as bible believing Christians…to understand God’s love for us and for the world?
That is what we will be discussing for the month of Septermber..
The Timeless Love of God
Today our focus will be on the foundation of the timeless love of God.
What is Love?
What is Love?
Love is an emotion
Love is immaterial or a state of being (although it oftren produces a material benefit)
Love as an emotion…is also compulsary
and Ultimately love is transformational
With God all of these fit well to describe God’s timeless (and I might add) unchanging…love.
God’s love as an emotion
this is the most common understanding of love in our world
God’s love as immaterial part of his being
God’s love as a compulsion
