Introduction:
Q. How many Lego bricks is the world’s largest Lego build?
150 million
A scene from LOTR
50 people, 3 years
Easy to think about material things like this being created
Harder to think about the world
But God really did create the world and humanity
We learn a lot about God from the creation account
Namely...
Main Point Our good Creator wants a relationship with us.
But first...
Context:
Author: Moses
After Exodus
Part of Torah
Genesis = “origin”
Adam and Eve were made to be like God and to be with God, and this is God’s intent for us as well.
Main Point Our good Creator wants a relationship with us.
Everything God created is good
Genesis 1:1–5 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Q. How is the way that God creates different than the way we create?
Us: Materials
E.G. Legos!
God: Ex Nihilo (out of nothing) [theology connection]
Only His words
He alone is worthy of worship
For creation = for our lives
Only God can take what feels like nothing and make something good.
Q. Since everything God created is good, what does this help us know about Him?
Why is what God created good?
BC He is good!
God doesn’t just do good things; He is goodness
Q. Why should knowing God as the Creator lead us to worship Him?
Earthly kings command respect
E.g. Movies (bowing)
Bowing when king is present
God is omnipresent (constant bowing)
Knowing the King of kings chose to make us sons and daughters should move us to worship Him with grateful hearts.
Main Point Our good Creator wants a relationship with us.
Everything God created is good
We were created for relationship with God and others
Genesis 1:26–31 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Q. Why did God create man? What was different about how God created Him?
Image of God
Relationship & glory
How God creates Adam:
Dust
Fashions with hands
Breathes
You have a good purpose because you were created by a good God.
Q. Who was God talking to in Genesis 1:26? Why is this important?
“Our” = HS and Jesus
Trinitarian community
John 1:1 - Jesus was not only present with God in the beginning, but all of creation was also formed through Him, the Word of God.
God is community, and He creates community for us
God creates Eve in Gen 2 (It is not good for man to be alone).
Q. Why is it better to seek God with others? How could isolation be harmful?
Marriage & relationship
We were built to walk with one another.
Isolation = missing out
Wrap-Up:
Q. What would it look like for you to live like you’re made in God’s image this week?
Creation = character
God pursues humanity (the story of the Bible)
Imitating the pursuit of God
Selflessness
When we live in a way that imitates God, we show the world what God is like.
