Prayer: God help me, give me your words, understanding and passion for the text. You call us not only to endure, but to conquer.
Problems:
no definition for “overcoming the world” or concept of conquering and being victorious
Endurance needs a goal, a vision and a hope. A mindset.
Shaena famously says, “I can do anything for 24 hours”
As Christians we feel like losers in the world.
“Why do the wicked prosper?”
“How long oh Lord?”
How am I an overcomer if I feel like a loser?
What action does endurance take?
We have a weak, sheepish faith. We are timid like mice.
Solution:
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.
And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

John is writing to christians in an around Ephesus- Greek and Jewish mixed churches
Nike- goddess of victory in all fields, including war, art, athletics, and music
It is not the greek Goddess who overcomes, but the Christ, Jesus the son of God.
It’s not the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your back, the effort and practice you put in:
It is Christ

And us. his children, his church.

What does it mean to “win/conquer/overcome the world?”
The world
The people, place, systems and ways
God loves the world (john 3:16)
in fact so much, that even though we are so broken, so corrupt, etc. God drew near to us.
God does not love the evil ways of the world, but his people in the world
God did not love the world because we earned it.
We know he loved the world because in spite of our ways he died for us who would believe.
Love overcomes
The world is under the influence of Satan
