Big Idea
Righteous living is made possible through the Gospel
Righteous living is made possible through the Gospel
Introduction:
Ryan Scheckler- mtv life looked great, he was inspriring - miserable life was lacking till he heard about Christ (Parents be careful who we allow our children to call heroes or who they look up too) may we be lead by the spirit)
It should move us not to praise that man but to praise God!
Ashamed-
I am Ashamed
(epaischynomai)- (epas-huno-my) to be ashamed — to be or become characterized by feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, or remorse.
Not
Roman world- reasons to be ashamed- mans pursuit of knowledge and pleasure and power
Three ways of the Gospel has made it possible to live righteously
Three ways of the Gospel has made it possible to live righteously
1. Power
1. Power
(dynamis)-(Do- Na-Mis) power — possession of controlling influence; often understood as manifesting influence over reality in a supernatural manner.
True power on display always amazes us
Mental and Spiritual
Mental- Rational- appeals to conscience, calls us to do what is right, presents the revelation of God that He loves us- to awaken us from the Drury of the lie of the Satan
God inspired and sent men forth to prepare the world for it
Isaiah 42:1–4 ““Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. “He will not cry out or raise His voice, Nor make His voice heard in the street. “A bruised reed He will not break And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. “He will not be disheartened or crushed Until He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.””
Then sent His son to make it known
John 17:23 “I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.”
Power of God- not a power of God
Grandest display of God’s power- its truly a powerful display of God’s power when someone comes to know God
It is far greater to save convert a soul from sin that to create the world.- I am not diminishing the work of God is still an amazing display of His power- but I must put into proper perspective the power of the Gospel to express what Paul believed
2. Salvation
2. Salvation
(sōtēria)-(SO- TEAR- IA) salvation — the state of being delivered or preserved from harm (of judgment); especially as what that state entails, a safe haven in heaven.
What was this Salvation- what is the power of this Salvation
a. Salvation from physical illness
Rescuing man body and soul
Matthew 9:21 “for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will get well.””
Luke 8:36 “Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.”

b. Salvation from Danger
Security in mans soul for whatever would be happening
Matthew 8:25 “And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!””
‘Safe shall be my going, Secretly armed against all death’s endeavour;
Safe though all safety is lost; safe where men fall;
And if these poor limbs die, safest of all,”- Rupert Brooke- World War Poem: Safety
c. Salvation from Crooked and Perverse Generation (Divine Antiseptic)
Acts 2:40 “And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!””
We truly do feel the effects of this generation-
may we realize it but cling to the salvation that comes from Christ-
do not be consumed as you wrestle
d. Salvation from Lostness
Matthew 18:11 “For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.”
The road that leads to death
How have we been lost- there is nothing good in us apart from Christ
e. Salvation from Sin
Matthew 1:21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.””
Now here dear friends we have the wonderful remedy for the disease of sin, very simple and very abundant… Charles Spurgeon
f. Salvation from the wrath of God
Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”
Let us not be mistaken without Christ there will be an account for our sins
e. Salvation though the final triumph of Jesus
2 Timothy 4:18 “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”
What awaits us when we leave this earth- praising the name of Jesus
Jew- Greek
No difference in condemnation
Romans 2:6–11 “who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.”
No difference in Salvation
Romans 10:9–13“that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.””
3. Justification
3. Justification
“Now there are no words more difficult to understand in all the New Testament”- William Barclay
God’s Righteousness is revealed in the Gospel- The death of Jesus for the payment of our sin- payment (Wouldn’t be good news is the Gospel just displayed God’s righteousness
Revealed through the resurrection of Christ- Salvation made available to all sinners who would believe
The Gospel reveals that righteous living is done by faith
(dikaios)- (dik-kias) righteous — characterized by or proceeding from accepted standards of morality or justice.
Romans 3:26 “for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Romans- The Just- How have we been made friends with God through Christ
Romans 1:17 “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.””
Galatians- shall live- we are seen justly as we live by faith- not by works
Galatians 3:11 “Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “The righteous man shall live by faith.””
In the OT Righteousness was by works- soon men would see they could not obey God’s law and meet His righteous demands
Be careful to think we are capable without Christ,
Hebrews by faith
Hebrews 10:38 “But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”
Deconstruction of your faith because of a individual- where is the forgiveness, I am afraid Christians have found their indemnity not in Christ but their own self preservation and self reliance
A sinner can only become just before God is by faith- Paul is declaring to the Romans; thus we to must understand that it Righteous living is not centered on how we should live but rather that in God’s sight we are considered just or righetous.. it is all about God- hence faith
Closing-
Today is a reminder for the believer that the power of God is evident in your life today. As you live no longer as an enemy of God but as a friend you continue to live rigteously by faith. You have the Salvation that is only possible through Christ not through the individual works of man.
For the sinner- Salvation is awaiting you… we have heard that you receive Salvation and by faith are justified
Response
Communion: 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”
