Ruth 4:1-22

Ruth 4:1–2 ESV
Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.
Business transactions happen at the gate
10 people as witnesses
Ruth 4:3 ESV
Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech.
Need the money to live off of
Ruth 4:4 ESV
So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.”
He is willing to buy the land
Ruth 4:5 ESV
Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.”
This makes things more complicated
He would be expected to have children with Ruth
Ruths firstborn would not be his child but Mahlon’s
His inheritance would be split not just between his kids but also the son of Ruth and Mahlon
Ruth 4:6–8 ESV
Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.” Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal.
Why doesnt he want to buy the land anymore?
It will be costly for him
it’s no longer convenient
It's not beneficial, he will suffer loss
Ruth 4:9–10 ESV
Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.”
Remember there were 3 qualifications for a kinsman redeemer:
Blood Relative
Resourcesor Means
Willing
Boaz will redeem Naomi and Ruth but it will cost him greatly
Jesus offers redemption at no cost to us but it cost Him greatly
In the gospel, Jesus took on our suffering and offers us a share in His inheritance!
Like Ruth our situation is hopeless and we are powerless to save ourselves from it
Sin
Death
Hell (seperation from God)
God’s standard is perfection and we are all filthy with sin.
No amount of good deeds can cover us from our filth.
Only Jesus blood poured our as our sacrifice can redeem us from the punishment we deserve.
Only Jesus perfect life can give me the righteousness needed to stand perfect before God.
God is so merciful and loving that He sent His son to do for us what we can never do for ourselves.
Christ takes my punishment and i recieve His reward (great exchange).
Mark 1:15 ESV
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Repent - Turn from this wicked rebellion against God!
Believe - Put your hope for salvation in Jesus and Jesus alone!
You cannot save yourself, only Jesus’ life can redeem yours.
Salvation cost Jesus deeply.
He doesnt just save us from the penalty of sin when we die, He saves us from the power of sin in this life.
Jesus offers you new life/real life will you recieve it?
Its freely given, recieve Him by faith alone.
