Understanding the Purpose of the Chosen Servant of God

Notes
Transcript
Jesus’ arrival came with an explosive ministry that informs us of how we are to walk
Luke 7:22 ESV
And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
Fascinating to see the Gospel comes with such great power and yet it begins with the work of opening the eyes of the blind.
When the Gospel is being carried out in its fullness;
The blind receive their sight
The lame walk
The lepers are cleansed
The deaf hear
The dead are raised up
The poor have the good news preached to them.
If we are called to be more like Christ it is important for us to understand the fullness of His call

The Chosen Servant

In 7 verses we are able to see there is a purpose that is declared for Jesus that will establish for us as servants of the Lord what our purpose is in the Lord
Make clear that as much as this is spoken over our Lord Jesus it paints the picture for us on who we are to be.
Isaiah 42:1 ESV
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
Series of possessive words express how serious the Lord is about those HE calls
My Servant
They belong to Him
Officer appointed to a task
I uphold
Give him power
Give him what is needed to succeed
My Chosen
Many are called few are chosen
Given favor
Hold a special relationship
heres your choice You can do what I say or Do what I say
Indelibly marked by Him
My Soul Delights in Him
Carries the living essence
Graciously accepted by Him
My Spirit is upon Him
Carry the Power of God (Which can be grieved)
Faculties to Respond to God
Carry the Spirit, Mind, and Heart of the Father
Jesus holds all of these and for this reason say: I only go where the Father sends me, I only speak what I hear the Father speak, I only do what the Father does.
Isaiah 42:2 ESV
He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street;
Its not about Him its About the Work at Hand
The chosen servant will not go around saying look what I did… or make a bunch of fanfare
Isaiah 42:3 ESV
a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.
Not Breaking the Bruised Reed
Is 57:15 Speaking of the Lord states
He dwells in the High Places;
Lowly and Contrite in heart
The work of the Chosen Servant of God begins to be unveiled here…The work of not bruising the reed is the work of ;
Revive the Spirit of the Lowly
Revive the heart of the contrite
Not quench the faintly burning wick
some of are at the very end of their rope all that is left is the ember at the end of the wick
Today the Lord could simply blow it out instead He fans the flame
While this section is speaking of Jesus it is declaring for us who we are to be…
We cannot be found breaking the Bruised Reed… we cannot keep our heads in the clouds saying to heaven with me to hell with you… we commit to the work of the Spirit and Heart
3. Faithfully bring forth Justice
a. 2nd time stated
b. Micah states what is that is required of you “…Do Justice”
v.4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged… Here is where we make the most sense that this is Speaking of Jesus
The coastlands this speaks of is the work that will come to the gentile nation
Isaiah 42:6 ESV
“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations,
the Chosen servant of God
Called in Righteousness
Taken by the hand
Kept by the Lord
Covenant for the People
Light to the Nations

Major Function

Isaiah 42:7 ESV
to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.

Open the Eyes of the Blind

Bring out the Prisoners from the Dungeons

Bring Out from the Prisons those who sit in Darkness

Isaiah 61:1 ESV
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me
Anointed to
Bring the Good News
Bind up the Broken hearted
Proclaim LIBERTY to the captives
SET THE CAPTIVES FREE
ORDER
Open the eyes
In John 3:3 the eyes of the blind cannot be opened unless they are born again
Liberation is not for the unsaved
it is after salvation comes that Liberation can be accomplished
What is the work of opening the eyes of the blind…
it is the work of exposing everything that is contrary to the will of God
aligning the sight to the will of God
Bring the prisoners out of the dungeons
This is a reference to a Jail or Cistern
We will not spend much time here but its worth noting this was not a double reference of Prison
The cistern is a place that is built by the self and does not yet have an authority over it
it needs exposure to draw the prisoner out of their logic and reasoning that has them spiraling
more specifically the cistern is the world of the dead where human reasoning triumphs as the voice of the Lord grows faint.
Setting the Captives free (opening the door of the Prison)
those who sit in terror and darkness; sadness and confusion
Prison proper
Authority has been given guardians have been appointed
It is in the frame of these three that we find the purpose for each of us
If this was spoken over Jesus and according to His word we will do all the things He has done and more in His name our purpose can be summed up…
IS 61 the Spirit of the Lord is upon me He has anointed me to
Preach the Good News
Bind up the broken-hearted
Set the Captives Free
That we would be porters of the scandal of the Gospel:
Have I been chosen it begins with a decision
The more you give yourself the more you see this scripture coming to life
It is not about listen to me… roll out the red carpet
It is the work of Setting the Captives Free… No one may remember who I am but when they look at me it may be said surely the Lord was with Him…
The blind receive their sight
The lame walk
The lepers are cleansed
The deaf hear
The dead are raised up
The poor have the good news preached to them.
Is 49 describes how this role is ours
The Lord called me from the womb
From the body of my mother named my name
Made my mouth a sharp sword
Hid me in the shadow of His Hand
Polished arrow
You are my Servant in whom I will be glorified…
v. 6 is it too light a thing for you to have been chosen to serve me…I will make you as a light to the nations… that my salvation may reach the end of the Earth (great commission)
Next week we will look at the second part of this before we begin to engage the work of Jails/Prisons
