1 John 2:22–25 ESV
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
Truth and lies. Both are out there seeking your attention.
And none more than the subject of eternal life!
So much religion, so much emotion, so much pressure.
Truth vs non-truth.
1 John 2:22 ESV
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
Liar? Someone who doesn’t tell the truth.
Someone who tells false accounts.
Someone who deceives.
Where does truth come from? God, right? Gives us day and night, life and no life, creation, laws of gravity, laws of physics, laws of right and wrong. He created, therfore He said how far, how deep, how wide, etc.
Remember God putting Job in his place?
Job 38:1–11 ESV
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? “Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?
The world we live in runs on these created truths.
Reality is from God, our conciousness, our being is from God.
We see these truths daily in our day to day living.
What do these truths testify to? A creator! God!
Romans 1:18-20
Romans 1:18–19 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
Romans 1:20 ESV
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
So, through creation and the truth of it’s excistence we know of a creator, God.
But how do we learn who He is?
Through his given Word written out through his creation…man!
God spoke to his creation and gave the ability to document it.
We have the Bible, God’s Word.
This church believes in the Truth of God’s word, it’s infailable, without error, and untruth.
Perfect, Holy, without defect.
But we also see something else at work…decay, brokeness, hate, untruth, death. We see something is not right, something is wrong...
We see it, we feel it, we wonder about, we talk about it…what went wrong....?
We didn’t believe in the truth and disobeyed. Fractured the relationship with a Holy and Pure God.
This something that is wrong, is this fracture played out. Seperation from God...
God and life, exsistence, being, vs death, destruction, decay.
Order vs choas, non-order.
This is what we are witness to everyday.
Maintain our home and keep it cleaned, well kept, and in order indicates life lives there.
Home in disrepair, weeds everywhere, shutters falling off, no paint, and roof caving in, indicates decay, disorder, and no human life.
We see order we see life, we see disorder, we see decay.
This is part of the reason the Bible stands out as the infallable Word of God.
God’s Word is alive and breathing.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Throughout time it stands!
Throughout time it lives!
Throughout time it gives!
It’s power is unprecendented.
More anciet copies than any other.
More current copies than any other.
Stands up to historical evedences.
Written by approximately 40 men of diverse backgrounds over the course of 1500 years.
All while not contridicating, lieing, or spreading any untruths!
A many has had it’s aim on it, to disprove only to come away a believer. I as one of them.
The Bible is truth…All of it! Not just parts but all of it!
There is no decay of this book as in others, it is alive and of God the creator!
So why all of this, this morning?
Because I want to make it a point where we get our defination of who Jesus is, who our Christ is.
It’s not from me and what I feel or a revaltion someone gets and is very passionate about and sounds good. If it doesn’t line up here, it’s wrong.
That’s what’s going on here. Some false doctrine is being spread and John is writing to encourge truth!
No different in today’s world as we’re going to discuss. Today’s message is to define who Jesus is and to object to what some say about Him.
1 John 2:22–23 ESV
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
1 John 2:24–25 ESV
Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
Truth: Jesus is the Christ!
What does Christ mean? It’s not His last name..
Christ comes from the Greek word Christos which means anointed one or chosen one.
This greek word is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Mashiach or Messiah.
Christ is his title, not his name. It is Jesus the Messiah, the anointed or chosen one.
This anointed one, chosen one, or Messiah is the one promised from long ago through God’s word to save His people from this brokeness we discussed earlier. You know death and decay, disorder.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
enmity: the state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something
(Read this back and go over it)
1st indication of righting the wrong. Yes, pain, hurt, destruction, and seperation but ultimately the head of that will fall!
Later on we get a promise of blessing through a people God has chosen to represent him.
The Israelites.
Genesis 12:2–3 ESV
And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Abraham and the covenant God made.
Where does the Word (Bible) come from? God’s chosen people, all the way back to Abraham and this promise/blessing!
I’m very thankful for the chosen people of God to share in the truths of God!
What else came through God’s chosen people? The messiah.
All the families of earth shall be blessed through this!
Through Abraham came...
The Davidic covenant is one that describes the truth that a King would come from David’s lineage and rule forever.
2 Samuel 7:12-16
2 Samuel 7:12–13 ESV
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
2 Samuel 7:14–15 ESV
I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.
2 Samuel 7:16 ESV
And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
Will come from David’s line
He’ll build the house not you
God will establish the kindom and preserve it
This throne is forever
Never will this love leave (not dependant on man)
Forever, this good rule will be.
What is this Messiah coming to do?
Isaiah 53:4–6 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Take on our punishment. I punishment we couldn’t right.
He corqured death!
More than 300 prophecies fullfulled!
From...
Born of a virgin.
Born in Bethelem
To..
the type of death he would suffer for us...
This is the anoited one, the chosen one, the messiah that scripture points us to.
Jesus fulfills all current prophecies, not just some but all, with more fulfilling to come!
This is our what our Messiah is to be...
A conquor of our enemy.
The means to the blessings promised through Abraham
The fulfulment of our eternal King to come and rule
A restorer of life with God by taking our punishment for our iniquities.
Now that we’ve got a bit of understanding of the Messiah.
Who is He?
Is He man? Yes,
Born of human birth and raised as a human child.
Got tired, got hungray, got thirtsty and slept,.
Felt pain, both physical and emotional,
was tempted
And felt loose and betrayal.
Is He God? Yes,
He claimed divine authority.
Forgave sins, no human is doing that.
Performed miracles.
Accepted worship
And stated “He and the Father are one”
Jesus is fully human and fully God.
Not a mere man that was anoited as a savior but God in the flesh.
Emanual: God with us!
There’s a teaching going around that Jesus as being just a man could perform micales and healing, that we as mere man can do the same thing.
That we can be little gods.
WRONG: Jesus wasn’t just merely a man, but fully God as well.
All and any authority comes from God and God alone…not man!
We aren’t little gods and will never be!
Is He a created being, like us or like an angel? NO! He is God, always has been and alway will be!
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
John 1:1-5
John 1:1–3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Is He sinless and perfect?
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
1 John 3:5 ESV
You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
Absolutely, only a sinless, perfect being could take upon the justice required to satisfiy the Holiness of God.
No other could, God’s holiness and justice required it.
We can’t pay wrong with more wrong and expect it to come out right.
Meaning we couldn’t pay/earn our way out of this.
Guilty, condemended. If Jesus didn’t come and live in our place, we were without hope!
Can we talk to Him or does it have to be through a special person?
Yes! Jesus is our High Priest, our mediator to the Father!
No longer is a Priest needed as in the old testament. Jesus fulfills the old testament law and we have direct comunication with Him through prayer.
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Lastly, Is He enough or do I have to do all that I can do first?
Isaiah 64:6 ESV
We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Our Jesus does not have limits.
Our Jesus is all powerful.
Our Jesus saves!
Our Jesus is God! Not created!
Do not be deceived!
He’s enough!!!
