Should I be a Teacher?

Not many should be teachers
James 3:1 NIV
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
We are warned that not many people should become teachers.
Why is this warning necessary? What bad reasons might someone want to be a teacher?
It’s good to desire being a teacher
1 Timothy 3:1 NIV
1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.
Desiring the office of bishop/elder necessarily requires teaching and the desire is considered good
What good motivations should cause us to want to be teachers?
Teaching is a privilege, a gift, and a responsibility
The minority of Christians will be teachers
Teaching must not be driven by our egos

The Character of a Teacher

The danger of bad teachers

Read 2 Timothy 3:5-8. What’s the problem with the teachers in this text?
2 Timothy 3:5–8 NIV
5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
What are the consequences of having ungodly teachers?
1 Timothy 4:13–16 NIV
13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
