Review

God freed them from Egypt through Moses
10 plagues, Red Sea
they have been complaining
seen more miracles
cured bitter water
manna from heaven everyday
large group of quails for meat
water from a rock
God gave them victory over the armies of Amalek through Moses lifted hands
Moses’ Father in Law gives some advice on how to lighten the load
Want you to appreciate what a large scale movement this was.
Psalms description of water from the rock
Psalm 78:15–16 NASB95
15 He split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. 16 He brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.
which makes sense considering 2 mil people
let’s get to it
Exodus 19:1–2 NLT
1 Exactly two months after the Israelites left Egypt, they arrived in the wilderness of Sinai. 2 After breaking camp at Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and set up camp there at the base of Mount Sinai.
they returned to mountain where God 1st called Moses from the burning bush and camp there
God foretold this when he first called Moses . . .
Exodus 3:12 NASB95
12 And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.”
that must have been a “Wow, God is faithful” moment for Moses . . . and they will camp there a whole year
Exodus 19:3 NLT
3 Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel:
God calls Moses to the mountain . . . pay attention to the lack of wonder described, especially compared to later
We will see that God can show up in various ways
big entrances that demonstration of his majesty, power
or small and simple entrances
There is always purpose how God show up, whether it is a voice of thunder, or a real quiet voice
There is a pattern of God showing up loudly for unbelievers or doubters
10 plagues and Red sea - Egypt and surrounding nations
this chapter for hard headed people
Elijah and fire from heaven for people who had turned on God
Day of Pentecost - so unbelievers would see
feeding of 5,000 - a lotfake disciples around
when he comes back to judged the earth - everybody
There is a pattern of God showing up quietly to true followers, believers, serious life changing stuff
burning Bush to Moses
Gideon while he was in hiding
prophet Samuel to David
Elijah was by himself when he heard a still small voice
one angel to Mary
When Jesus rose again, behind closed doors
Famous people do the same things
slip in quietly for personal things
show up on the red carpet for public
It could be a great sign if God just keeps quietly popping in
Exodus 19:4 NLT
4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.
Moses goes up to the mountain to talk to God, and God says take this message to the people
you’ve seen all the miracles I did for you, how I have taken care of you, and have brought you to myself
The main purpose of the deliverance and that demonstration of power was to bring them to me, God said
same things today: God sent his son, miracles of virgin birth, miracles in his life, miracle of the resurrection . . . to bring people to God
miracles have purpose
yes, they are given to help you
but they always further God’s plans, agenda too
God has so much power that he could do some throw away miracles, but he doesn’t
Question to consider: How would God doing a miracle for you, benefit his agenda?
if he has already done a miracle, how part can you play in that miracle benefiting God’s plans
car - pick up someone for church
money - help those in need
fame - spread the gospel, influence people to good
Exodus 19:5–6 NLT
5 Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”
God helped them, demonstrates his power, but they have to accept him as their God; they have to say Yes, Lord
and if you say yes, I will make you my special people, holy nation
same thing today (God is consistent) - God helped us and demonstrated his power through the resurrection, (while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us) . . . but we still have to accept him as God, we still have to say, “Yes, Lord”
when we say yes, we become his people, special treasure
Exodus 19:7–8 NLT
7 So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the Lord had commanded him. 8 And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.
Moses tells the people the message and they agree to accept Yaweh as their God.
Exodus 19:9 NLT
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will come to you in a thick cloud, Moses, so the people themselves can hear me when I speak with you. Then they will always trust you.” Moses told the Lord what the people had said.
God told Moses, I am going to let the people hear me speak to you, we will not talk like we normally talk
it is going to be a whole production so that they will know you are not running a scam, but that I am really talking to you when you start giving them the laws
I want them to trust you as their leader
you would think by now they would trust Moses as their leader - 10 plagues, red sea, water from rock, bread from heaven, victory in battle
but that’s how people are . . . what have you done for me lately?
that’s a good prayer, if you are seriously following God, “Lord, show them that you are with me . . . so that they will listen to me”
Exodus 19:10–11 NLT
10 Then the Lord told Moses, “Go down and prepare the people for my arrival. Consecrate them today and tomorrow, and have them wash their clothing. 11 Be sure they are ready on the third day, for on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai as all the people watch.
now they need to prepare themselves
wash their clothes
and we will see later, no intercourse
God said I will appear on the third day (sound familiar)
Exodus 19:12–13 NLT
12 Mark off a boundary all around the mountain. Warn the people, ‘Be careful! Do not go up on the mountain or even touch its boundaries. Anyone who touches the mountain will certainly be put to death. 13 No hand may touch the person or animal that crosses the boundary; instead, stone them or shoot them with arrows. They must be put to death.’ However, when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, then the people may go up on the mountain.”
also in preparation set up boundaries all around the mountain
death penalty for anyone who passes the boundary
only after hearing aloud, long blast from a ram’s horn can the people even come up to the mountain
Exodus 19:14–17 NLT
14 So Moses went down to the people. He consecrated them for worship, and they washed their clothes. 15 He told them, “Get ready for the third day, and until then abstain from having sexual intercourse.” 16 On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled. 17 Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
So moses had the people get prepared
On the third day the thunder roared, the lighting flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain
and then the loud, long blast from a rams’s horn (the signal that they could come up close to the boundary)
Moses said let’s go meet God, and they people stood at the foot of the mountain
Exodus 19:18–19 NLT
18 All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply.
Whole mountain was covered with smoke because God had descended on it in the fire . . . big smoke, big fire . . . . and there was an earthquake . . . and the blast from the horn grew louder and louder
Moses spoke to God and God would thundered his reply . . .
Exodus 19:20–22 NLT
20 The Lord came down on the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses climbed the mountain. 21 Then the Lord told Moses, “Go back down and warn the people not to break through the boundaries to see the Lord, or they will die. 22 Even the priests who regularly come near to the Lord must purify themselves so that the Lord does not break out and destroy them.”
God calls Moses to the top of the mountain
God gave another warning to the people not to break the boundaries or they would die . . .no one , not even the priest
Exodus 19:23–25 NLT
23 “But Lord,” Moses protested, “the people cannot come up to Mount Sinai. You already warned us. You told me, ‘Mark off a boundary all around the mountain to set it apart as holy.’ ” 24 But the Lord said, “Go down and bring Aaron back up with you. In the meantime, do not let the priests or the people break through to approach the Lord, or he will break out and destroy them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them what the Lord had said.
Moses said that we already have set up the boundaries (curious conversation)
God says go back down and warn them again, anyway . . and bring Aaron back up with you . . . and Moses did as he was told . . .
it took awhile for Moses to realize how hardheaded people can be
As we close, appreciate the situation: thunder, lightning, fire, smoke billowing, sound of a trumpet that just keeps getting louder, and an earthquake . . . and God says what?
Exodus 20:1–3 NASB95
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
